  1. I intend to post all my Hero System characters here. I don't plan on doing too many, but I do love to create characters. (All I do with M&M is convert DC characters). This thread will be mostly original creations for the Champions universe that I hope to some day use as PCs. It might also serve as a way to build characters in case I ever GM. There will probably be a few conversions of existing comic characters. Feedback is always welcome. My skills with this system are very limited. One day, this first post will probably be edited to become an index.
  2. Re: My First Hero System Character: Bluebird Answers to some random thoughts since my last character post. 1. I like the gestures limitation. I can't imagine Killer Frost (DC character) being able to shoot ice if you tied up her arms. Where would it come from? I understand that it is a dangerous weak point. 2. There is a much longer Bluebird backstory, but I didn't think people would read it, so I shortened it to be something closer to what you would see in a Champions book. De Winter drugged Isley and conducted the experiments without April's consent. De Winter is actually the nemesis character for my Champions Online version of Bluebird, but I didn't feel including her as a hunted or a complication would be fair to a GM. If I were GM'ing or had given up my hopes of ever using Bluebird (and I'm pretty close to doing that anyway), I would changed the complications slightly and create Maxima de Winter as a different type of cold controller to be Bluebird's nemesis. 3. Bluebird's look is inspired by Dove (DC comics). The bird motif reflects the homage. I also just like the name. A long time ago, Bluebird was the name of a costumed avenger I created in another rule system (even pre-M&M). I wanted to keep the general look with tweaks, but switch to being more of a superhuman than a heroic character. I also love cold-themed powers, but only a few cold-themed names appeal to me. Icebird is an ok name, and is an alternative I considered. 4. I love the idea of weaving the grad student rivalry into something bigger. As it is, I just wanted it to illustrate the consequences of how unpleasant April can be in her day-to-day interactions with people who she sees as competitors.

Treated to the best of everything and blessed with extraordinary good looks as she matured, April graduated with honors from Millennium City University. She became a research assistant in the school’s biology program and worked with the brilliant, but unstable Dr. Maxima de Winter. De Winter was convinced that she could unlock the secrets of immortality by slowing down a person’s metabolism. Her research was condemned by her peers and even scoffed at by her skeptical assistant. As a result, de Winter ultimately decided to test her experimental procedure on April. The injections de Winter gave April either mutated the young woman or awakened a latent mutation, because they certainly changed Isley into something new. April began to shoot streams of ice when she awoke while de Winter was conducting tests. This complication frightened de Winter, who fled, taking all of her notes with her and destroying most evidence of the procedure. April thought about going to the authorities, but decided to conceal the results. She didn’t want to be seen as a “freak” by her peers and scientists. Eventually April realized that the transformation might be a blessing. The more she learned about her powers, the more impressed she became. Not only could she probably make an entire scientific career out of studying her own body, she realized she might be one of the most powerful superhumans in the city. As a means of testing her powers, she designed a costume and began to call herself Bluebird. Her first forays into crimefighting involved simply thwarting street thugs and the occasional robbery, but her increasing confidence led to her challenging the schemes of a local VIPER nest. Bluebird finds herself at a crossroads. Very protective of her secret identity, she is wary of working too closely with other superheroes, but she finds herself having to admit that might be necessary to further explore the bounds of her powers safely. Personality: Prior to her transformation, Bluebird was a fairly vain, confident, and cold person, capable of being charming, but usually not bothering to make the effort. If anything, the manifestation of her powers has only made her a bit icier. Although her own ideas about personal conduct would probably preclude her from ever being a supervillainess, April lacks the self-sacrificing personality that characterizes many heroes. Although not a leader, she is not a particularly effective follower and her cooperation with other heroes has not been very successful. April has always been hyper-competitive and refuses to believe that she is second best in anything. This makes her a somewhat pouty loser on the few occasions she is beaten, and it also makes her more than a little cutthroat about everything from school performance, to research grants, or even just games of chess or cards. Bluebird likes to believe that she will do whatever it takes to stop a villain or crime, but it remains to be seen whether this would ever rise to using lethal force. Her overconfidence and her desire to always appear to be in the right probably would make her think very seriously before crossing over into outright vigilantism. Powers: Bluebird depends primarily on her ability to project blasts of ice. She is capable of creating ice blasts than can be lethal, freeze a target in place, or affect a wide, cone-shaped area. She also has the ability to create an ice shield for additional protection, freeze the ground to create a slippery sheet of ice, and erect ice barriers. Bluebird’s low body temperature grants her immunity to intense cold and her slowed metabolism has granted her a degree of longevity, something she has only been able to confirm in theory. Also, for reasons she hasn’t quite been able to explain, the experiment that mutated Bluebird also granted her the ability to fly. She has yet to discover any limits on this ability, but it ultimately inspired her bird-themed motif. Appearance: April Isley is an attractive young woman in her early 20s with an eye-catching figure, bright blue eyes, and very light blonde hair that she usually wears pulled back in a ponytail. Since the manifestation of her powers, her skin tone remains pale and very cold to the touch year round. As Bluebird, April wears a light blue costume that appears as a long sleeved minidress with a white belt. The outfit is accented by a white scalloped cape, white heeled boots, and long white gloves. Her mask is blue, with white panes that do not reveal her eyes. While Bluebird, April also uses her powers to make her hair appear white.
  4. Re: My First Hero System Character: Bluebird I stand corrected then.
  5. Re: My First Hero System Character: Bluebird I think Bluebird is largely done. The changes are all reflected on the last post of her. I'm pretty satisfied with her. A review of the combat rules suggests she might trend towards glass cannon, but that fits with my conception anyway. Thanks for all the help everyone. I might do a second character shortly, but if I ever get to use Bluebird (seems unlikely), I'll certainly post about it.

  7. Re: My First Hero System Character: Bluebird I'm still working on the skill level concept. From what I can see, it saves 1 point and gives more benefits, so you're probably right about using it. When I imagine an ice bond entangle, I'm stuck on what Mr. Freeze does in BtAS. His cold gun hits a person with ice, which gradually builds up freezing them in place. I've always imagined that must do concussive force damage at the same time as entangling. Your conception, though, works perfectly well for imagining a non-blast entangle. Edit: Adopted the Overall skill level, and used the extra point on biology.
  8. Re: My First Hero System Character: Bluebird I guess I'll give up on the entangling blast and just go with an entangling power.

  10. Re: My First Hero System Character: Bluebird Bluebird is almost ready for posting, but I changed the multipower to 75 points and redesigned the entangling blast to be: Entangling Ice Blast (Blast 4d6; Ice Bonds [Entangle, 5d6, 5 PD / 5 ED, Vulnerable to Fire and Heat, -1, Linked -1/2]); 3f By my calculations, this is 70 active points (20 for the blast and 50 for the entangle). This is the last part of the build holding me up. I'm pretty satisfied with the rest of the multipower, the ice shield, and the characteristics. Skills are still fuzzy to me, but I think I've at least calculated the costs right.
  11. Re: My First Hero System Character: Bluebird That's what I did. People didn't like it much. The Int-based skills are all off by one because I raised the Int to 18 in that draft but haven't corrected it. A fully "corrected" and redone draft will be done tomorrow when I finish adapting Panpiper's suggestions. Here is the skillset and the costs: Acrobatics 9 + 20/5 = 13 + 1 = 14 That's a cost of 3 +2 = 5 Deduction 9 + 18/5 = 13 + 2 = 15 (3+2+2=7) Inventor 9 + 18/5 = 13 + 2 = 15 (7) Language (French, Fluent) (2) SS: Biology 9 + 18/5 = 13 +2 (3+1+1=5) SS: Biochemistry 9 + 18/5 = 13 +2 (3+1+1=5) SS: Chemistry 9 + 18/5 = 13 +2 (3+1+1=5) High Society 9 + 20/5 = 13 +1 = 14 (3+2=5) Stealth 9 + 20/5 = 13 + 1 = 14 (3+2=5) I like the idea of an ice slide to save points, but it doesn't fit with the concept. I just don't like Iceman and Frozone that much.
  12. Re: My First Hero System Character: Bluebird One last question. Your set the OCV and DCV's at 9 and set the cost at 45 each. But I think the cost is 30 each. The two values start at 3 and you're adding 6 to each, for a total of 12 x 5 in cost.
  13. Re: My First Hero System Character: Bluebird This construction confuses me: 43 Ice Multipowers (75 points reserve); Unified -1/4, Linked to Ice Shield -1/4, gestures -1/4 4u Ice Blast (Blast 12d6) 1/2 Endurance 3u Entangling Ice (Entangle, 7d7, 7 PD / 7 ED), Vulnerable to Fire and Heat, -1) 4u Ice Cone (Blast 10d6, Cone +1/2) 4u Ice Blast II (Blast 10d6) Zero Endurance 4u Killing Ice Blast (RKA 4d6, ED) 1/2 Endurance 4u Ice Sheet (Change Environment, -6 Dex for Surface Movement, Radius 32 M, +1); 1/2 Endurance 2u Ice Wall (Barrier, 10m long, 4m high, 1/2m thick, 15 Body, 10 PD / 10 ED; Configurable +1/4, Ablative -1/2, Vulnerable to Fire and Heat, -1); 2u How are the powers coming in as costing only 4 points? A 12d6 blast with the 1/2 End Adder's cost in a fixed (sorry I've been using ultra) slot seems to be 12 x 5 x 1.25 / 10 = 7.5, or 7f. Here is it shown as 4f? Edit: I see it now. All the limits apply to every power. Multipowers make more sense than M&M arrays, but they are very complicated.
  14. Re: My First Hero System Character: Bluebird Very nice use of limitations.

She is spending more on characteristics now, because of advice given above and the elimination of the endurance reserve power. I reworked the powers, mostly per suggestions above. The cost on the barrier, the shield, and the entangle power should all be correct now. I added an autofire blast to spend some of the points saved by the reduction in cost of the ice shield. I also made the Ice Shield cost endurance, because that made more sense. The skill costs SHOULD be right. I left out the characteristic/5 bonus in the initial draft. This allowed me to substantially reduce the amount spent on skills, freeing up points for the increases in characteristics. My next take will include all the background text, so hopefully I'm down to just correcting minor problems. After that, I'll sit around and wait for a miracle to let me actually play. Incidentally, is the only way to reply in a thread the quick reply option? I like being able to preview my posts.
  16. Re: My First Hero System Character: Bluebird I was trying to play with that, but I couldn't figure out how to change the gender.
  17. Re: My First Hero System Character: Bluebird 1. The skill costs are "right", I think, but I did leave off the characteristic "bonus" to the roll on every one of them and messed up the science skills base score entirely. So I'll fix that. 2. The CON/Stun thing is interesting. The Stun score she has is about the same as most 5E Champions characters. The CON score might be low for this system. I'm used to M&M where Con really doesn't do much. But a 20 CON on the 5E Champions would be kind of high for the type of character I picture her being. 3. I'm not surprised I messed up the active v. limited point costs on the multipower. I'll fix that too. I will, say, however, that separating an ice blast and an ice entangle has never made any sense to me. The ice is still slamming into you as it englobes you, right? Wouldn't that do damage? 4. The resistant protection is just a mistake. Thanks all for your help! I'll have a new draft soon. This is exactly the kind of feedback I needed. Edit: Great picture! I would have put the CO renditions of her in, but I was trying to be barebones since I knew the stats were going to change as I learned about all my mistakes.
  18. Re: My First Hero System Character: Bluebird I'll make some adjustments and figure out what's wrong with the skills.

Any feedback at all is appreciated. Anything could be wrong. I had trouble spending 400 points, so if there are major miscalculations, there is some wiggle room to move points around and keep the core of what I want to do intact.
  20. Re: Morgaine the Mystic of Crimelords Very reasonable theories. I don't really agree, but I can see the other side. I think if I used Morgaine in my non-Champions campaigns, I'd just tweak it more to my liking anyway. If I ever ran a Champions campaign, I probably would use her outside the Crimelords, so that would require changes also.
  21. Re: Morgaine the Mystic of Crimelords One thing really puzzles me about Morgaine's background, other than her stat block. Morgaine is a real mystic; meaning she can really do magic. However, it says in her background that her career as a stage magician was ruined when someone revealed she was actually a mystic. Does that make any sense? Why would people care that Morgaine was doing REAL magic instead of STAGE magic? Aren't people more likely to stop going to her perfomances if they find out everything is "fake" or someone reveals her trade secrets. I just don't see why Morgaine's career would suffer at all. In fact, I think she could probably make more money as a real mystic than as a supercriminal, but perhaps that's wrong. Also, contrast Morgaine's status with Sapphire. Sapphire is more popular as an entertainer because she's a superhero. You'd think Morgaine would have the same kind of boost.
