  1. Re: Star Trek: How dangerous are phasers?

With the way it's set up, phaser fights are DDeadly (with two capital D's). Logically, if there really were high-tech phasers like that, fights with them would be really deadly.

But that doesn't really feel to me like it matches the source material. Am I wrong?

    Should phaser fights be:

    1) Hard to hit, but if you hit the guy is DEAD?

    2) Easy to hit, and if you hit the guy is DEAD?

    3) Easy to hit, but you don't go down in one hit?

    4) Hard to hit, and you don't go down in one hit?

I feel like it should be Number One. But, in order to make it that way, people would need lots of DCV/Defense/Dodge/etc. Alternatively, there'd need to be a rule change elsewhere.

    How would you do it?

Wow. This is word for word the post that I made on RPG.net here and the GURPS forum here.

  2. Re: [Traveller Hero] What was it exactly?

Book update: It's been three weeks since the date the company (through Amazon) claimed to have shipped the books but they still haven't arrived. However, they have given themselves a two month window. They say the books will be here sometime before August 3rd.

  3. Re: [Traveller Hero] What was it exactly?

Sadly' date=' the last time I ordered the books on Amazon, they eventually sent me my money back with a "sorry, our seller didn't actually have any" message. Grumble, grumble.[/quote']

I'm beginning to get worried. It's been a week since I ordered them and the Amazon site still shows that they haven't shipped yet. :(

  4. Re: [Traveller Hero] What was it exactly?

I had been checking Amazon ever so often to see if they had this, and when I looked this morning...THEY DID.

They had one copy of books one and two it seems!

I of course promptly ordered both. :)

I just hope I don't get a "Sorry. We were only foolin'. We don't actually have it." email.

  5. I mean I know that it was the Traveller setting in the Hero system, but was it just a direct conversion of the book?

If so, which version of Traveller?

Was anything new added? Anything taken out?

I know I may never find a copy but I would still like to hear more about it.

  6. Re: Beginner Character Creation

As a new HERO GM, I have personally decided that I'm not going to ask my players to be able to make their own characters for a while.

I will just ask them to describe what they want and I will make it for them. This way of doing it has been working out so far, and I will continue it until they themselves actively want to be able to start making their own characters.

  7. Re: Independent Duplicates

Hmm... It's not really Mind Link' date=' because the information-sharing isn't two-way. Maybe the most elegant way to simulate this might be with skills (especially Knowledge Skills), and the fact that he has these "brothers" whose minds he can access is just the special effect for why he has these skills...[/quote']

    I agree.

@the OP: Just buy lots of skills and say that the reason he has access to those skills is from the "link". Done.

  8. Re: Assuage my fears about the complexity

I first just want to clarify that I'm not the one who needs to learn the rules. I already know the rules. The thread is about how to get my players to learn the rules.

And so basically what I'm hearing is that the best thing to do is start them with pregens or characters that I make for them, play for a while and hope that they (or even one of them) gets interested enough to want to learn the rules.

The truth of it rings true. :)

I already know which guy is going to be the one to try and which guy is going to be the guy that plays for years and still won't be able to make his own character.

  9. So I'm starting to like my new big HERO 6E books and I have a list of possible things I'd like to use it for.

    BUT

It does look a bit on the crunchy side. And While I enjoy reading and learning game systemsmag-glass_10x10.gif, I find that most other people don't. I know there is that 2-page summary of HERO thing, but after reading it, I see that, while having good info, it doesn't REALLY tell the player how to do anything.

So what's the best way to go about bringing this system on line for a group? What's the best way to go about teaching someone how to play? What about teaching someone how to make a character?

I have a fear that I won't be able to use this system because I won't be able to teach it to anyone.

  10. Re: And 6e print books start to arrive

From the front page' date=' [b']Login[/b] with your user name and password. Then click on Purchases, and then on the date of your purchase. That will give you your tracking number.

On my page, it just says "usps" in the tracking number column as opposed to a number. But it does claim that the order is "filled", though.
