Re: What does HERO Games have against >30 DEX, INT and EGO?
Uh huh. Regardless of your claim here, the math is still important. 3D6 results in a very small set of possible numbers and an even smaller set of likely numbers. And I bet they had to go out of their way to do it.
Why don't you illustrate your point by posting the type of attacks, number of attack dice, OCVs (with average modifiers), DCVs, Defenses, and SPDs of all of the PCs in that group and let the readers here decide?
You would be mistaken. I have run a significant portion of the games in which Zlf was involved. There has never been a problem challenging the PC.
She has been snatched up by Fezzik, a Brick with a 5 SPD and 23 DEX because he had 5 HtoH combat skill levels. He misses a lot but when he hits she cannot leg sweep him away as he is a giant and heavy, she can't break loose because his STR was 75 and when she hit him, he did not take any STUN. She needed back up from the team Brick to hurt the baddie but he had her in grasp.
She had to fight the Giant Spiders from Mars who had resistant defense and weak spots that would required her to get close enough to be hurt. The had a 23 DEX as well with three CSLs. She hits more but they hit harder. The average STUN per Turn was almost always a wash.
Explosive and AE attacks against the team meant that tougher PCs were able to take a few hits but Zlf had to burn some of those numerous actions dodging out of the way.
Look at this way. Zlf needs to hit an average Super villain four or five times to take them down. They need to hit her only once or twice. Zlf is likely to hit three times and maybe four in a turn. The baddies are likely to hit once and maybe twice during the same turn. The chances of either character going down has been pretty even, especially when the heroes have to rescue innocents or otherwise save the day. We are not talking about arena battles here.
Zlf as been unconscious face down at least as often as any other PC in the campaign.

Re: Future Knowledge
Pity.If I was running it, I'd sit down and reread Flashman at the Charge, and then send him to the Crimea.
The Flashman books are an invaluable resource for 19th Century games, incidentally.
I am running Flashman's grandson, Roger;) in a Pulp game in which the current year is 1906. He really believes his grandfather and is trying to live up to the image. As you say, no better reference.

Re: Armageddon 1946
Wow. Fine openner. A little darker than our campaign group would run it, but superbly done.

Re: The cranky thread
God bless you, Lemming. I am sorry for your loss.

Re: The cranky thread
She's off Life Support and expected to pass within the next day.My aunt is out there now. I'll be going out at the end of the week to finalize all the financial stuff.
My prayers are with you, Lemming. I am very sorry to hear that.

Re: Traveller Hero Launches!
Wow. I have had to wing so many fights with whatever maps were available or ad libbed for all manner of Hero encounters that I must be the oddball. I can convert just about any map to make a fun Hero fight so long as the story is good.

Well' date=' here I am...[/quote']Firefly rep.

Re: Longest Running Thread EVER
Great to have you back, Doc.Not quite' date=' Baz. It's just that things here (HERO forum in general, not just the NGD) had gotten to the point where they were causing me more stress than the stress relief they were giving me. And when the "ability to deal with life" balance was as precarious as it was (and is) for me, having something that netted on the [i']negative[/i] side of that wasn't exactly what you'd call "productive."I've been told by a few people who've kept in contact that some of the things that were contributing to my having an overall negative side of the equation experience with the forums have evened out... so I decided to poke my head in again.
...
That, and I missed the heck out of a bunch of y'all...

Re: Traveller=Pulp Hero+Star Hero
I found Firefly to be more of a modern Western rather than Pulp, although I can see your side as well.Hmmm... Need to watch the boxed set now...
Whedon did indeed describe Firefly as based on a post American Civil War ex Rebs in the Wild West converted to a science fiction setting, so I tend to agree with your POV.

Re: Traveller-era guns
I'll go with the sexy blaster' date=' gyrojet gauss or at least pulse rifle myself. My window of credibilty is wide but normal modern guns in the far future in the mainstream technolgy just dosn't work or me personally. If I want flying brass I'll play a modern game. Obviously works fine for lots of people though.[/quote']I would prefer that at higher tech levels, the guns would be markedly better, or even sexier, than the previous ones. One more D6 damage and 100 meters more range doesn't get across the feeling of a more advanced projectile weapon. Thus the difference between and assault rifle, ACR, and gauss rifle should be enough that Mike the Merc would dump his AK 47 analogue for that ACR in a heartbeat.
"Ooh, laser designator/rangefinder, thermal sight, 100 round variable ammo mags, gyroscopic stabilizer, ballistic follow up shot computer, tutorial training program and 2/3 the mass. Man, that's for me."
Instead, you get 10 more rounds, 1D6 (maybe) and roll to see if you aren't too barbaric or stupid to use it.

Re: To catch a clone
Different knowledge bases would also revel the difference. A good detective should be able to catch the clone due to lack of the knowledge or experiences of the original.

Re: Traveller=Pulp Hero+Star Hero
Given the similarity in fell between Pulp and Space Opera literature, some of the same feel to Traveller, including anachronism, is to be expected, I guess.

Re: Traveller Hero Update
Ideally, Traveller Hero and T5 will create the synergy that everyone is hoping will benefit both lines.
Like shadowcat, I will be buying both, partly since my Traveller history goes back to the "black box" days, and partly because some of the T5 improvements in Char-gen so farlook interesting.

Re: Traveller Hero Update
Yesss!
-
Re: Traveller Hero Update
I was curious as to the lack of news on the T5 or CoI web sites and I am not of a mind to pay for the moot at this time. Too bad.

Re: Musings on Random Musings
Thanks. It's a tough job' date=' but it's very valued.[/quote']Thanks, Lemming. Two down out of five, but it looks like the other three will make it. They are cute enough that they are sure to get adopted, anyway.

Re: Traveller Hero Update
Thanks for the great response Polaris.
While I am as impatient as the rest of the fans, we want the product done right, so we'll trust you to release it when it needs to be.

Re: What Fantasy/Sci-Fi book have you just finished? Please rate it...
I am reading the Scoundrel Worlds(Star Risk) series by Chris Bunch, whom I really liked for his Sten series. Two dimensional, unlikable, characters and repetetive, unbelievable action have resulted in a rather disappointing read.

Re: A Thread for Random Musings
Mrs. Mentor is fostering kittens for the Animal Rescue League again. Invariably, the fatality rate for these too young or too sick kittens is around 50%. I hate having to deal with the emotional ups and downs of getting attatched and losing them.

Re: Traveller-era guns
Incidentally' date=' the gun geeks on the Traveller Mailing List seemed to think that that wasn't strictly necessary. Even present day weapons would probably work in vacuum, at least for a while. Eventually there would be problems with lubrication, heat and so on.[/quote']I expect that the scene was more for effect than accuracy, but it did look cool.
-
Re: Traveller-era guns
They are probably correct. But I still think that it is cool that the writers of Firefly was even thinking about this. Scientific accuracy aside' date=' it was a very stylish touch.[/quote']Exactly. The scene did give the eisode a very "spacey" feel which one sometime lost in the series.
-
Re: Traveller-era guns
I freely admit that I disliked the "slug throwers in space" concept until Firefly made it work, complete with having to put "Vera" in a space suit to fire in vaccuum.

Re: A Thread for Random Musings
Wasn't Al Gore the Hollywood poster child for narrow minded judgementalism before he became their darling? What a difference a couple of decades makes.

Re: The cranky thread
I am the primary breadwinner. Actually, now I am the only breadwinner. My wife homeschools the kids, feeds and keeps house, and is in charge of our social life. I definitely have the easier job.
Don't tell her that, though.
