  1. Re: Dispel, not a single power but a single Adv.

    Yes OP is "original poster"

Well, I can only tell you how it works in the games I play in.

For Aids, Drains and Transfers, you use heal or aid.

For Mental powers you use the power to defeat itself.

In one game a character plays a Japanese mage. The player wanted her to be able to break possession/ domination effects. The GM told the player that the character needed to buy Mind Control to break people out of possession/ dominations, because they were (normally) built as Mind Control themselves.

For Transform, you again use transform. Most likely described as: "turn back to your normal self", or something similar.

For entangles use anything that deals it damage.

For Summons, I don't actually know. Strangely I've never actually been in a situation where "unsummoning" ever came up. Now, of course killing the summoned creature will end the effect, but possibly not in the way you intended.

Do remember, Transforms (and sometimes summons) have a "back door" means of breaking them, like kissing the prince/princess, or drinking the from the "fountain of forever".

So basically I need a VPP or possibly a Multipower for all the effects I need to counter Instant, lasting effect mechanics that could possibly be used to fullfill a Curse / Enchantment / Hex / Ensorcelment SFX?

What if any limits does such a power framework get?

EDIT: Thinking of my own campaign, I could enforce a Limit on all powers falling into a SFX with

Limit: Can be Dispelled, what is that worth?

  2. Re: Dispel, not a single power but a single Adv.

    Excellant points Gideon.

    Absolutely spot on.

To end those effects, one has to buy an Aid / Heal

    Drains, Flashes?

    What against

    Aid, Transfers, or Transforms

    What against

Mental Illusions, Mind Control, or other Menal powers

(Massive Aid to help with breakout roll? But then it does not force a new Breakout roll

    Killing attack for

    Entangles, Summons

How does one end these effects in Hero?

What is OP? Original Post er?

  3. Re: Problem with force field

My half serious answer is what genre are you playing in?

If your in a Folio / Piers Anthony world there could one answer and the other answer is clothes / Costume are considered generally to be covered by both Force field and the Comics code.

In a Fantasy genre it may be proper, given SFX, that clothes could either be destroyed or be protected.

  4. Re: Dispel, not a single power but a single Adv.

    Derek Hiemforth

Bless you Derek for seeing exactly the question I was posing and providing a cogent answer.

“I'd let him target "any Power with this Advantage" instead of "this Power with any Advantage,"."

Exactly the language I should have used to describe my take.

    Thanks

    Gideon

“The problem with this (as Killer Shrike already pointed out), is that not every continuous power is uncontrolled.”

That is correct, but KS missed my point. Continuous Powers are not usually maintainable over long periods of time; they have LOS problems END problems etc.

If you just ignore my question and looked purely at SFX, then yes many powers or mechanics could be Curses, enchantments etc. without being Uncontrolled.

Looking at the system in totality, I agree that a specific Dispel targeted against "any Power with this Advantage" would be a waste.

However, I will buy it as extra dice of Dispel on the side to throw against powers that do have Uncontrolled on top of a Dispel that effects Any power of (Evil) 1 at a time)

    GamePhil

“Only To End Continuing Effects (-1/2, maybe)”

Neat, I like it, will use it. Thanks.

    Kdansky

“only to end continuing effects (-1).”

Not sure what the Limit is worth, but great minds think alike. Thanks.

    Sean Waters

“You want to be able to break curses and enchantments? Why not define the sfx as 'curses and enchantments'?”

I agree with you except I don’t want to write a legal document explaining every instance of what that covers. I am wary of the Idols of the Marketplace.

The GM could just say “this is a Corruption” really it could be anything that ios not X, where X is what I have chosen to be my SFX.

But I agree with you that targeted SFX goes a long way in defining the power.

    Pawsplay

“What other kinds of effects do you dispel?”

    Instant effects

  5. Re: Dispel, not a single power but a single Adv.

Sounds like a closely related group of powers' date=' +1/4. But what's the SFX? What kind of power is this?[/quote']

The power, not the mechanic, is a divine SFX to free an area or person of a on-going continuing effect (Curse, enchantment, spell, etc.)

So instead of picking, drain, suppress or Mind Control I picked Uncontrolled because that is what you need for a lasting prolonged effect of the kind of power I wanted the Dispel to work against.

  6. Re: Dispel, not a single power but a single Adv.

well, to be honest I'm not sure I understand what the use of such a power would be. Is the idea to make an uncontrolled power controlled?

I'm not sure how that would work, if it is legal, or what the point of it would be.

    Please explain more.

If I read your post correctly, I am not trying to target just the Uncontrolled Adv. of a Power.

The Dispel would only work against powers with the Uncontrolled Adv. and then dispel, or not, the whole effect.

It is not a case of eliminating the Uncontrolled adv. from the rest of the Power.

    Clearer?

  7. I am building a Dispel for a Divine use character, but I want to define the Dispel working against, not one power, but one advantage; The advantage being Uncontrolled.

To be clear, the Advantage: Any single Power of [sFX], one at a time, is not what I am talking about.

I want the target of the Dispel to be any Power with the Uncontrolled Advantage. Normally you choose a Power that is the target of Dispel.

Broadly acceptable to Herodom at large, or not?

  8. Re: Applying megascale to UoO, ranged

D'oh, ok in the light of day I see the missed step.

    See attached HD file

    Here now the power finalized:

    Preservation from Darkness:

Invisibility to Sight and Mystic Groups , No Fringe,

    Reduced Endurance (0 END; +1/2),

    Uncontrolled (+1/2),

    Persistent (+1/2)

    Limited Power Only v. Clairsentience (-1 1/2),

Limited Power Only v. Evil SFX (-1/2)

    plus

    Power Defense (15 points),

    Uncontrolled (+1/2);

Limited Power Only v. BODY / EGO Adjustment Powers (-1),

Limited Power Only v. Evil SFX (-1/2)

    plus

Naked Advantage: Usable By Other (+1/4) for up to 109 Active Points

    plus

    Differing Modifiers: ;

Extra Time (6 Hours, Only to Activate, -1 3/4),

Limited Power Maximum number of Targets = 16; -1,

    Concentration (0 DCV; -1/2),

OIF (Requires Holy / Sancified Location; -1/2),

Only When Serving God's Purpose (-1/2),

Lockout (-1/2) for up to 65 Points of [invis & Power & NM]

  9. Re: Applying megascale to UoO, ranged

1 down' date=' the rest of HEROdom to go. :D[/quote']

Hold on, what did I do wrong?

    Preservation from Darkness:

(Total: 245 Active Cost, -39 Real Cost)

Invisibility to Sight and Mystic Groups , No Fringe, Reduced Endurance (0 END; +1/2), Uncontrolled (+1/2), Persistent (+1/2)

    (87 Active Points);

    Limited Power Only v. Clairsentience (-1 1/2)

    (Real Cost: 35)

    plus

Power Defense (15 points), Uncontrolled (+1/2); Limited Power Only v. BODY / EGO Adjustment Powers (-1), Limited Power Only v. Evil SFX (-1/2) (Real Cost: 9)

    plus

Differing Modifiers: Usable By Other (+1/4)

    (136 Active Points);

Extra Time (6 Hours, Only to Activate, -1 3/4), Limited Power Power loses about half of its effectiveness (Maximum number of Targets = 16; -1), Only When Serving God's Purpose (-1/2), Concentration (0 DCV; -1/2), OIF (Requires Holy / Sancified Location; -1/2) for up to 109 Points of [unknown] (Real Cost: -83)

    Why -39 Real pts.?

  10. Re: Applying megascale to UoO, ranged

Ah, I see now. It works silmiliar to the old Create from first ed.?

    Got it. Thanks.

"Uncontrolled by definition bypasses any # of spells running limit."

That is not going to sit well with the GM, so I guess I get a Limit, -1/2, only 16 maximum targets.

Now I have to work on getting th eformat right in HD, I think I will use the Custom Power as Base power for Differing mods.

EDIT: The Rep wheel must turn before I can rep you, but thanks for teaching a old a new trick

  11. Re: Applying megascale to UoO, ranged

Use of a Differing Modifier would negate the need to use x16 number of recipients. Just cast the spell individually on multiple recipients one at a time. Uncontrolled and Persistent are duplicating the same effect. Just one of the two is all that is necessary in this case. Since it is a granted ability Uncontrolled seems more appropriate.

    example:

    Preservation from Darkness

    Notes: Total Cost = 13 Points (33 + 22 - 42). END cost for Caster = 8* (Hero Designer figures the END cost for parts 2 & 3 seperately but they should be counted together (22 + 55 = 77, 77/10 = 8 END).

33 1) PRESERVATION FROM DARKNESS, Part 1 (Primary Effect): (Total: 90 Active Cost, 33 Real Cost) Invisibility to Sight and Mystic Groups , No Fringe, Limited Power Effect ends if target uses or makes any Dark Pacts (+0), Reduced Endurance (0 END; +1/2), Uncontrolled (+1/2) (70 Active Points); Limited Power Only vs. Clairsentience (-1), Limited Power Only vs. Evil SFX (-1) (Real Cost: 23) plus Power Defense (20 points), Limited Power Effect ends if target uses or makes any Dark Pacts (+0) (20 Active Points); Limited Power Only vs. Evil SFX (-1) (Real Cost: 10)

22 2) PRESERVATION FROM DARKNESS, Part 2 (Casting via Naked Modifier): Usable By Other (+1/4) for up to 90 Active Points of Part 1 (22 Active Points)

    2 END

-42 3) PRESERVATION FROM DARKNESS, Part 3 (Limitations on Primary Effect & Casting via Differing Modifier): (55 Active Points); OAF (Holy Symbol; -1), Concentration (0 DCV; Character is totally unaware of nearby events; -3/4), Only When Serving The God's Purposes (-1/2), Requires A Skill (Faith) Roll (-1/2), Gestures (-1/4), Incantations (-1/4) for up to 55 Points of 55 Points of Parts 1 & 2.

    5 END

Ok Hyper-Man, I consider my Hero-fu as being "Top Men" worthy but I am having a little trouble following / understanding your construction.

Where / what is a Differing Modifier?

I get the END cost and the limitations as applied to the Active cost of 1 & 2.

    I get the Naked modifer.

My greater concern is that the campaign (and sane GM's everywhere) limit the number of spells / effects running at one time. So 16 castings of one spell are not possible, campaign limit is INT / 5 .

If I read your post correctly.

  12. Re: Applying megascale to UoO, ranged

If your GM is OK with that*, uncontrolled continues to work even once you are outside the normal range of the power. You'd only need megascale to actually GIVE the ability at range. If you could go visit someone, put them under your protection, you could then leave and, because of the uncontrolled element, it would keep going.

*He might not be because the timescale the power continues for is in excess of what the power description implies is normally reasonable BUT, the Cleric is tying up quite a few points and making himself a target for the enemies of those he protects, so it may be acceptable.

I just read Uncontrolled and I did not read anythiong about Powers with Uncontroled continuing to work outside of maximum range.

I did read that powers with Uncontroled that are in a MP or VPP still continue after points or slot is changed.

So thanks to reading that I will have to put Lockout as a limitation.

"If you could go visit someone, put them under your protection, you could then leave and, because of the uncontrolled element, it would keep going."

Yes, that is exactly what I wanted to do.

However, my reading of UoO seems to limit the power to its Range (AP x 5")

The GM likes this sort of effect as influence so while he has a head for mechanics, the power has plenty of hooks.

The ones you suggested I passed along. Thanks.

  13. Re: Applying megascale to AoO, ranged

    Do you have duplication?

I'm just wondering what the concept behind the power is. I can see it is useful, but how is it supposed to work? Flie, demons, and protect my friends, where'ere they may be?

    Duplication, no.

The power is a compound power:

    Preservation from Darkness

Invisibility, no fringe, Sight and Mystic groups.

    Only v. Clair sentience

    &

    Power def.

Only v. BODY / EGO adjustment powers

Both Red END 0, Persistent, AoO simultaneously x16, Ranged, Increased Range 4x

Uncontrolled (turn off if target uses / makes any Dark pacts)

    Only vrs. Evil SFX

This effect was created by a Cleric to help those in power, and thus his allies, to be beyond the sight and grasp of Dark powers.

The concept is how to allocate one's Faith to help others throughout their lifetime , whereever they may go .

Now later in life ambition means this preservation can be used as political leverage, reaping what was sown long ago when the character was more idealistic.

  14. Re: Applying megascale to AoO, ranged

Does an Uncontrolled power cease to function if the target leaves it's range?

The Uncontrolled Adv. itself does have a provision in it that it (the power with the Uncontrolled adv.) has a common way to turn off.

The UoO adv. states that the power stops working if the target is beyond the range of the power with UoO.

So say the range is 1 km. The target and provider are more than 1 km distant from each other the target loses the AoO power(s.)

  15. Re: Applying megascale to AoO, ranged

Because the minimum range would then be 1km. You wouldn't be able to use it on a character standing a few yards away' date=' for example.[/quote']

Dang, I should have thought of that.

I fixated on the range allowed not on the range as an attack.

So iether I come up with a reason why any one being a target would have to stand 1 km, or some fraction of 1km, away or use Increased max range.

    Thanks Derek

  16. Re: Applying megascale to AoO, ranged

The first question is, How big is the campaign world? Earth only, Earth and near space, Earth and Lunar, Solar System, Galaxy, Universe, Some other world, etc

Then you need to figure out how far 2 points can be away from each other in that world.

Then you figure out how much megescale yo need.

Well, it is for a Fantasy game so the distance really is a matter of a Med. Sea size.

    Increased Range for 1/4 is 25x not 5 x giving a 200 AP power a range of 10km

While 1/4 Megascale means range is 1000km

Question is, Should I apply Megascale at all?

  17. Re: Applying megascale to AoO, ranged

Well the LoS can be elminated with the proper adv.'s.

Range of the power becomes a function of AP x5 in inches.

However even a 200 AP power that is still only 1000" or 2 km.

The book suggests buying increased range. But applying Mega scale seems a better idea.

Why would I not want to buy Megascale?

  19. Re: Elementary, My Dear Watson

Since I haven't figured out the nifty multiple quotes thing....

As to the WF: Handguns - He and Watson both shoot at the Andeman Islander in "Sign of Four" and at the hound in "Hound of the Baskervilles". As The Monster said, he decorated the wall with VR (mentioned in "The Musgrave Ritual"). It appears he knows how to use a pistol, he'd just rather not. (He does pistol whip a couple of guys, however.)

As to Irene Adler, define "a woman of character" There are a number of undertones in "Scandal" showing that Holmes respected Irene quite a bit, and not only as the winner in their match. The last line of "Scandal" is "He used to make merry over the cleverness of women, but I have not heard him do it of late. And when he speaks of Irene Adler, or when he refers to her photograph, it is always under the honourable title of the woman." IMHO, the disad should remain, or perhaps be modified slightly. Holmes does get in one good snark at the "King" after he remarks that Irene would have made a good queen if she were "on [his] level”.

“From what I have seen of the lady, she seems, indeed, to be on a very different level to your Majesty,” said Holmes coldly.

He also turns down an emerald ring in payment in favor of her photograph.

And as to Watson referring to her as "the late Irene Adler", in the Victorian period, that didn't necessarily mean she was dead, simply that she was no longer a point of interest.

(Can you tell I like Irene?)

As to the DNPC for Watson, I see him more as an ally or contact than a DNPC. He's very capable and (as discussed above) intelligent. He has useful combat skills as well as noncombat skills ("Quickly Watson, get your service revolver!"). He refers to himself and Watson as "this agency" ("Sussex Vampire"). He depends on him to protect their client and to investigate in "Hound of the Baskervilles". I just don't see him as a DNPC.

Holmes is, however, very protective of Watson. In "The Three Garridebs", he tells the forger "If you had killed Watson, you would not have got out of this room alive."

He needs a KS: Music. He wrote a monograph on the Polyphonic Motets of Lassus ("Bruce Partington Plans). He often attends the opera and concerts (in "Study in Scarlet", he wants to wrap up the investigation so he can go hear Norman Neruda play the violin).

He needs Cryptography - "I am fairly familiar with all forms of secret writing, and am myself the author of a trifling monograph upon the subject, in which I analyse one hundred and sixty separate ciphers." ("the Dancing Men").

He needs SS: Physiology - he recognised the relationship between the three sisters by the shape of their ears ("Cardboard Box") and later identified one of the victims by the shape of her ear (which was all he had).

He also needs Tracking (“Study in Scarlet”, "Silver Blaze", "The Priory School", "Hound of the Baskervilles", "Boscombe Valley Mystery"), SS: Ballistics ("Reigate Squire" and "The Empty House"), SS: Psychology ("Scandal in Bohemia", where he lures Irene Adler into betraying where she had hidden a photograph based on the "precis" that an unmarried woman will seek her most valuable possession in case of fire, whereas a married woman will grab her baby instead.) and probably a dozen other things I've forgotten.

    Mary Ann

I second that, Wow. Ok that is exactly what I wanted / needed.

Thank you for bringing your encyclopedic knowledge to bear.

So I added everything you suggested, although I substitued Anthropology for Physiology.

I had thought to use DNPC for Watson much like I would use it for Storm and Kitty Pride, that now does not seem right.

Contact seems to distant, Follower seems too callous.

By "Woman of Character " I was trying to convey a certain Victorian flair for a grudging respect in Holmes eyes.
