  1. Re: Cool Guns for your Games

(haven't watched the video yet, but I wonder if he knows that he's got the dust cover closed still on that aimpoint? at at least one point during he's got it closed, but it's in a demonstration room. Also, he seems to be going for a safety many times, and the weird thing is, I can hear it "click"... however the 249 doesn't have a safety selector, the only time it's "safe" is when you haven't loaded it. Lastly, I thought they removed the "magazine" well on the newer ones because it rarely worked well at all (this I can attest to).

But cool video none the less.

  2. Re: Star Wars: Technological Stagnation?

I'm pretty sure she was using a variation on the "Absorb/Dissipate energy" ability that permeates non-cannon Jedi power sets.

I'm pretty sure the "Absorb/Dissipate energy" ability is based on Vader "catching" Han's blaster bolts in Empire, so it's sourced in Cannon. I've seen other sources saying that he has some sort of Sith power glove that was made to do that, however I think that's less cannon than Vader using the force to somehow negate the damage from Han's shots.

As a side, I also think that the same scene shows us (or is modeled to show us) just how useful a high "fast-draw" type skill (assuming, probably rightfully so- as Han is a smuggler, he has a fast draw skill at all= Again... Han Shot first! ;) ) is fairly useless against a Jedi Strong with the Force.

  3. Re: Star Wars: Technological Stagnation?

For playing Star Wars D6 for 10+ years, I've never had an issue with Jedi being the lion's share of the PC party... in fact I've had most games where there is one or at most two Jedi, and more than a few with no Jedi at all... Most folks took the original series as a template, and if there was already one Jedi then no one else took one (mostly). More often we had a run on how many folks wanted to play the Smuggler or Tramp Freighter Captain. And when we got old enough we used some of the Rebel Source Book and got really into the Rebel Special Operational Forces... Lot's of fun games with that sub-genre. Long live the rebel Patfinders... :D.

  4. Re: Star Wars: Technological Stagnation?

I though he just said he was a pilot - and the loophole being that Anakin being a pod-racer was that he was technically a pilot.

I see that specific quote (emphasis mine):

Luke: Ben! Why didn't you tell me? You told me that Darth Vader betrayed and murdered my father.

Obi-Wan: Your father... was seduced by the Dark Side of the Force. He ceased to be Anakin Skywalker and "became" Darth Vader. When that happened, the good man who was your father was destroyed. So what I told you was true... from a certain point of view.

Luke: A certain point of view?

Obi-Wan: Luke, you're going to find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view. Anakin was a good friend. When I first met him, your father was already a great pilot. But I was amazed how strongly the Force was with him. I took it upon myself to train him as a Jedi. I thought that I could instruct him just as well as Yoda. I was wrong.

Luke: There is still good in him.

Obi-Wan: He's more machine now than man. His mind is twisted and evil.

Referenced the first movie (emphasis also mine):

Luke: No, my father didn't fight in the Clone Wars. He was a navigator on a spice freighter.

Obi-Wan: That's what your uncle told you. He didn't hold with your father's ideals; he felt he should've stayed here and not gotten involved.

Luke: You fought in the Clone Wars?

Obi-Wan: Yes. I was once a Jedi knight, the same as your father.

Luke: I wish I'd known him.

Obi-Wan: He was the best star pilot in the galaxy, and a cunning warrior. I understand that you've become quite a good pilot yourself.

    [sorrowfully]

Obi-Wan: And he was a good friend.

It seems to suggest that Owen Knew Anakin before he fought in the Clone War (Beru also suggests that she knows Anakin well, because she tells Owen at one point (in the ten lines they have before they die, lol) that "Luke has a lot of his father in him"*), and also suggests that he was older when Obi-wan met... I will cede that it's wrapped in a bit of double talk, but I still don't agree with the prequel on him being a kid. But this does digress from the point of the thread... and I'll admit is mainly my take on things, and most definitely not cannon.

    *

Aunt Beru: Where are you going?

Luke: Looks like I'm going nowhere... I'm gonna finish cleaning those 'droids.

Aunt Beru: [after Luke leaves] Owen, he can't stay here forever, most of his friends have gone. It means so much to him.

Uncle Owen: Well, I'll make it up to him next year, I promise.

Aunt Beru: Luke's just not a farmer, Owen. He has too much of his father in him.

Uncle Owen: That's what I'm afraid of.

  5. Re: Star Wars: Technological Stagnation?

Because the past has the Sith. They don't want to do without Sith, but they don't want to undo the victory at the end of the movies either.

Although actually the "Old Republic" games could be considered to take place in a parallel universe anyway which makes the question moot.

Wait... a parallel Universe to the first movies (4,5, and 6), or a parallel to the Prequels (1,2, and 3)...

Remember when Luke asks, Obi-wan tells him that he met his father when he was a fighter pilot already, and no I don't buy into the Obi-wan was lying bit... not to mention there were enough other problems between the two, that I consider the prequels a alt. universe anyway. But I'm a (prequel) hater who believes that Han shot first.

Also a bit of Cheek added into the post ;).

    Libyan tech

number 25 is cool look like a bullpup ak 74 design any one got more info?

    Lord Ghee

looks like an twisted p90, I don't think it's an AK design, but I've been wrong before... unless that dude (and the weapon) is (are) a giant(s) then that magazine looks like it's pretty small (I'd say .22-5.56) size rounds, I think it's a tad small for 7.62, but again, I've been wrong. Pretty advanced stuff really, I'm surprised.

  7. Re: Cool Guns for your Games

Heh, They came up with the protoype gunfire locator right next to where I live.

I had a bit of a weird Deux Ex moment when it went live.

    The future is here

Yah, the tech we have available to us is friggen awesome.

  9. Re: Cool Guns for your Games

    just scored big Gents,

The Program Executive office Soldier (you spend money on PR officers . . . .)

    lots of cool stuff

show up not cert but us army site

This is a Great find a US Army site announcing Rapid fielding Initiative stuff.

    Lord Ghee

Lots of cool stuff on there. I've seen Proto-versions of the shotty when I was in, The gunshot detector, we had unit sized ones (Battalion level) when I was in Kosovo, I was in the Talk when our base was attacked, and you can get information on where the rounds came from and where they are going as small as .38 they said, we saw 9mm and 7.62 that day get traced. Then security teams were sent to the originating locations to root out combatants... So I know we have this tech avalible, but I didn't know it was down to personnel sized yet (though, I did get out 11 years ago now, lol).

The MSS, I was lucky enough to be in the 82nd Aco. 3-325 (it's gone now, they have a Cav unit there now), and our Cco guys were testing this stuff out. Biggest gripes (again 10 years ago) was that the screen would back-light your eyes doing two things, 1) mark you at night (even a black screen gave off a ton of light at night), and 2) the cord at the back would get caught up on everything, I know 3 soldiers personally who cut they're wires every night with various things, because the tech guys wouldn't even try to make it wireless (they said it made it too prone to interference and hacking), tech must have improved in those areas... nice.

I've got an earlier version of the PEOS sitting at the foot of my bed... it's mostly heavier because it uses 1000 denir Cordura, but not by much... Now I still need to save up to get the plates. I saw some new plates being fielded in Yuma about a month ago (It was on the news) that were all fabric of some-sort that could stop multiple rounds from 7.62 rifles near the same region of the body (only needed to be just off, 1cm or so, of the first point of impact) without failing. I saw them test from pistol rounds through 7.62... and they could be small enough to fit in a Kidney plate pocket... Good stuff.

And that STTW is totally a new thing to me... Good find man.

  10. Re: Cool Guns for your Games

Assuming you're fighting mostly living beings' date=' and can hit vulnerable areas, wouldn't poison bullets be the uber-ammo?[/quote']

I dunno, in the army we were taught (by the way, not really taught, it was just a saying), "Two in the head, you know their dead" (we were actually taught to aim for center mass, and double tap). It's when you do the cordon/movement through the objective that you put two in the guys head to make sure that he's not just wounded, or unconscious (we were warned, if you go past them, and then do it, then it's a war crime, so better just to make sure as you go)... That's better than poison...

Even better than that, try a 12 gauge slug... that'll ruin someones day, I don't care what armor he's got on. I even saw something somewhere (maybe here) where the dude was using slug and buck shot rounds... in one shell... nice!

Even better, a SCAR Heavy, with double taps to center mass, and as you follow through to take the ground, use a sawed off 12 gauge with bird shot (or those rounds that have buck shot and bird shot in one shell) to the face of anyone lying down... That should end the issue. Some SF troops carry a sawed off pistol grip shotty strapped in right under their arm (though it's honestly more used for a Hasty door breach than it is for shooting people, and even then it's normally a 410 or 16 gauge).

  11. Re: Special Forces PC groups and adventures that happen "off the clock"

I can only tell by my experience in the Army Reserves where we don't have access. That isn't to say that they would not have access' date=' but they are not likely to keep a weapon out for longer than it would take to go to the range when they are not out on bivouac training.[/quote']

Yah, the regular army is like that (so are the Rangers after the above mentioned bank heist) in that you only sign weapons out as a unit/to go to range. SF have open range 24/7 individually or as a group, so they can show up drunk at 0300 and sign out firearms to go down range (note that this would probably cause a call up their chain of command due to a buddy looking out for another buddy when he's drunk) but it's been done before. Most units and guys I know do keep their weapons in the unit arms room, but I know at least one Green Beret who keeps his issue M-4 at the house, mainly because his unit likes "last second" call ups, and most of the unit don't want to have to stop by the arms room.

They truly operate by different rules...

Note: the quote in Blackhawk Down, where Hooten (Eric Banna) E6, looks at a full bird who has just asked him to safe his weapon, looks back holding his index finger up saying, "this is my safety." actually took place, though I don't think it was Hooten. Their life is in some ways very relaxed compared to regular army/Reserve, a lot less of the BS involved in Rear-D BS.

I spent a year in the 82nd ABN (infantry) and have worked beside the SF of a few occasions, as well as have a few buddies who are all in now, not saying I'm the last stop for information, in fact far from it. But with SF it's best to think of it as, if it isn't that way now, it might have been for a while. Especially with the wars going on now (Cambodia, Laos, Iraq, Afghanistan, various "rebelling" Muslim countries) the SF are very busy boys, and they really have a small bit of down-time... not to mention, I'm betting once you get that used to sleeping next to your rifle, then it's going to be more comfortable to just let the guys take their weapons home for a bit, especially if your going back down range in a week, ya know.

  12. Re: Special Forces PC groups and adventures that happen "off the clock"

If I were you check out the "Inside Delta Force" book, Sure it's a specialized SF unit run by JSOC, but it'll still give you an idea, or if you want to watch it in "near to Gamer fiction" jump on Amazon Prime and grab a download (or just get it on DVD, via Netflix or something) the first season of The Unit... which is based off the book I mentioned... It's not an end all be all, but the information and feel would work for gaming (for example the show is really bad about gear and weapons, in a figity way). But it shows how bad op. tempo can get. really shows you how much "down time" you should expect, for fiction anyway.

  13. Re: Special Forces PC groups and adventures that happen "off the clock"

Funny' date=' when I read that, I thought of "Soldier of Fortune." Stupid video games...[/quote']

lol, right on. Funny thing is, when people say Special Forces, they really don't understand that the Army Green Berets are who they are talking about, as that is their official name, "Special Forces" (Green Berets are actually their nickname) When you want to refer to the entire special operations community, you should instead say, "Special operational Forces," or SoF.

  14. Re: Special Forces PC groups and adventures that happen "off the clock"

Most Special Operational Forces operational tempo is WAY jacked up. on average (when there isn't a mission coming down the pipes, and since the "war on terror" those times don't really exist anymore) they Train for 8 months a year, and then go on deployment for 8 months.... and continue. One of my buddies has a swing shift where they have about a month back where they work on the weekdays (approximately 9-5 type deal) and get weekends off, but trade from South America to Afghanistan, and back... I don't know how long he's gone to either, but you can expect it's almost a year, and then he get's the month free, and back down range.

Most of those guys can't even keep a relationship (much less a marriage) because they are gone all the time (either training or on mission). So they do occasionally have days off, it's far from the norm. They say that if you go into SoF your "life" is the unit. Saying that, there are times at which one can get free... Like one of my other buddies had a wedding, and a few of our old platoon mates who had gone into Special Forces were able to make it there, but it was only for the day and half the next day, and back to base it was. So especially now, they are seriously busy.

Add to that things like SEALs are usually on a boat, so they ship out with the boat, I'm sure they have allowances to go off boat for missions that they are required for.... But I know less about navy SoF than Army.

Not to contrary to Archie, but most SoF units consider their troops as secure a place to keep their gear as the arms room, and though I don't know many guys who keep their weapons out at home, they can (and in fact don't need command signature to take their weapons out of the arms room, any time of day they want. In fact in the early '90's even a group of Rangers were busted for robbing a bank with their own weapons they got out of their arms room only hours before.) keep their gear in the house... Most of my buddies in the SF keep things like their night vision and scopes at home. Most troops keep their web gear at home, same thing with armor.

  15. Re: Cyberpunk: how did it change?

Don't hate the player character. Hate the role-playing game.

So... Friday Night Firefight it is...

For those who don't know, "Friday Night Firefight" is the name of the Cyberpunk 2013/2020 combat engine... :)

By all means: if you have cool (and it doesn't have to be necessarily 100% functional) clothing for a gun fighter to wear' date=' please do share. That post of mine was pretty much an attempt to get the ball rolling on attire suggestions/pictures/videos.[/quote']

How about British SAS and an American Delta operator, that works for me :)

  17. Re: Kill the Dude with the Thing

I say destroy the thing! If you can't destroy it' date=' throw it into the sun![/quote']

I think this was covered earlier, *sigh* ;) If you throw the thing into the sun... Then the SUN will have the thing... and now we'll have to kill the sun, because it'll be the "dude" with the "thing." That will make things so very much harder once the sun is gone... not only that, the dude who then has the thing was able to wipe out a sun to get it.

  18. Re: Kill the Dude with the Thing

Wasn't there a show a few years ago where the whole Oprah audience all got new cars?

    Or something like that.

yah, well, I don't really watch... any... Oprah, so I just saw the clip this morning, and they didn't really show a time-stamp, so I may be telling old news, by this point, lol. It's probably from that episode which you speak.

  19. Re: Kill the Dude with the Thing

In all seriousness' date=' have you seen what she hands out on that one show? My sister was watching said show once, and let me tell you, sitting through her show for an hour is totally worth the thousands of dollars of swag you take away.[/quote']

I just saw something on the morning news where she gave away a flipping CAR! I'm not even kidding you.

  20. Re: Cool Guns for your Games

It isn't me. I'm on a few gun forums, but I'm not even sure if they allow avatars. =) No, I'm not really a military firearms focused guy. No offense taken at all. I'm not "tacticool" (though I do use that term, mostly mockingly) all that much outside of maybe my shotguns. I have only recently purchased any firearms that had any rails on them (both pistols, of which I've mounted a light on one of them), and I don't even know what you're talking about with "PC," though I am aware of what an Acog is.

I do own one red dot sight. Its an ultra-dot, and its on my S&W Performance Center 629 V-comp... mostly because I bent the rear sight on it trying to compensate for the huge blade sight they have on it, and I wanted to try one anyway. It looks stupid. I'll replace it with iron sights again in the future, either an XS 24/7 express sight or a more traditional sight with maybe a gold bead front sight.

The most "military" firearms that I'm interested in are shotguns of varying types, a pistol caliber carbine perhaps, with a bullpup design being desirable. I do have a vague interest in some of the gas-piston style AR platforms, but I dislike the idea of the 5.56mm round as I have an affinity for fat, heavy bullets, but not necessarily giant magnum type stuff. I stopped hurting myself on purpose many years back and would like to continue that trend as the arthritis is beginning already and its not looking good for the future. (Oddly, even though steel and concrete don't hit back, they still hurt you in the long run when you try to beat them up.)

The biggest scenarios I worry about, gun-wise, in order, are: self defense, home invasion and zombies. The first one is pointless since we don't have CCW here in Illannoy. I do not consider myself an "operator," a "ninja," a "gunny," or any such silliness. I have no affiliation with, nor did I participate in the armed forces. My attempts to do so were stopped by my father, and subsequent attempts were blocked by my being diabetic. I'm not bitter about it. =)

I do like to use the same avatar on all forums when possible, but I just don't participate in them nearly as much anymore and don't really keep too much track of it when emails aren't sent to me to check it out. =)

And, in games, its like my tag-line says... I think its just fun. I like ridiculous stuff in games. =) If I thought I could actually handle it, I'd love to have a revolver that fired 12 gauge shotgun slugs or sabots out of it. Sure, it'd probably be like 3 or 4 rounds, but hell, they'd be noticed... =) Alas, I think my poor wrists would complain even more.

Yah, I'm more of a line walker in that respect... I started out as a "knife and sword" buff. And was led kicking and screaming to my love of firearms. And then later my enjoyment of gear... though I would not consider myself a gear-head, and also tend to make fun of the "tacticool" guys, though I'm probably closer to it than I'd like to admit, I just don't buy Parclet just because of the name, I'll take any gear if it works right and complements my training/feel.

A PC is a Plate Carrier, armored vest with the SAPI plates inserted. Mine is second string, mainly made for airsofters, but I feel that If I need it, I probably won't be alive long enough to actually wear it out... (defense is always easier, however they (outside your perimeter) are always more numerous, and better supplied). I don't, personally like the Acog because quite frankly that iris on the "eye" end is too small for a point scope, however, I have seen that they've started to move the point scope up on the newer models...

I did my time in the infantry, and even worked in "special interest platoons" who did some back up work for Special Forces that amounted to falling asleep in a HMMWV about 3 miles away from the action and never actually being called into the scenario, but it was good training, and I try to keep it up, but I'm still ending up old, fat and lazy. And then a stint with the 82nd Airborne... and that was... dull to be honest. I was medically retired for developing Asthma in Kosovo after my platoon got into something that started making my lungs bleed some... so that ended my chance to go with half of my guys from the previous unit into Spec. Forces... but I have a really awesome family, and most of my buddies are dealing with issues that came with the first few years of Iraq and Afghanistan.... so I actually count myself very lucky.

But I'd say I'm less of a "gun nut" than a military enthusiast. But don't get me wrong, that line is blurry at best.

I do love the M-16 "colt style" American variants as weapons... and for me I feel it's the best firearm out there, but the 5.56 is rather meh in some performance issues, and has even been griped about by troops and SoF personal. So I plan on getting one of the 7.62 models that are out there, as long as my chest rig (PC) will still take the mags.

And yah, I can feel you, My wife has a Glock 30 (?), a tiny .45 that I really don't like... (wrist-pain wise) but you hope to never have to use a concealable piece.

It's late and I'm rambling... but yah, I didn't mean to come off as insulting in that previous post, and if I did, I apologize. I just thought that your avatar was useful, and that when I saw them on other sites, that I doubted you were on, was secretly you... I do that from time to time, and I've never come out and asked anyone, but sometimes you wonder if you have seen that style of writing on another site... anyway yah.

In games I usually play a "fighter/Brick/ near tactical type, but I mostly just do because I can use some of the firearms I like looking at, and not pay all the cash... lol... but we've been playing a lot of fantasy lately, so I haven't really had the chance to play a modern character... though I find that I do tend to judge a modern system at how they handle shotgun damage... most times. lol.

  21. Re: Cool Guns for your Games

I dunno, I've seen that avatar on anything from Gun forums to Special Forces pic of the day type sites... I always wonder (in the back of my head) if that's you (as I tend to use the same Avatar for myself in multiple forums), but I know you're not necessarily a "military" firearms focused collector. By that I mean no offense, it just doesn't seem that your a very big Gear Head/ "Tacticool" guy, up on the latest and greatest from the SoF teams and what form of PC their wearing and what type of Acog they've put up on the rail of their weapons.
