  1. Re: Blue Beetle's Disads?

I still say the compulsive eating thing was a good character trait, as long as he controlled it. Fat Blue Beetle is no good, but BB moaning about how he wishes he could eat pizza is funny. Had it never been introduced at all, probably wouldn't be saying, gee I wish some superhero had a weight problem. But I feel it humanized him a lot and it certainly endeared him to me. I hate hate hate fat beetle, but I like the idea of a super hero who isn't naturally prone to a stunning physique. I never understood why putting on spandex gave a person six-pack abs and a killer ***. If that were remotely logical, spandex would be a lot more popular.

  2. Re: Blue Beetle's Disads?

It was Birds of Prey issue where I thought they addressed it best. Chuck Dixon is the one who established that he'd gained control of his eating habits without completely invalidating Giffen's previous stories.

THerefore, psych lim for five to ten and he has to make ego rolls (I'd say with a bonus) around his favorite foods which are Tex Mex and pizza I believe.

I thought it added depth to a pretty stupid joke.

  3. Re: Comics you loved...but apparently no one else did

It's not so much individual comics that I miss as entire stillborn universes.

The Protectors and it's spin offs (Ferret, Man-of-War, Gravestone) from Malibu - another good, "back to basics" universe before it started going south. First they merged it with their "X-Mutants" title and then they killed it in order to make room for...

    .

    Hellah Protectors

The MAX Cage. I thought it was the best Cage yet. I loved the "thug life" Luke Cage and the Noir twists. It was mini, but no plans for more and it seems to be pretty much universely reviled.

Alan Moore's Youngblood. The only decent Youngblood ever. Only like two issues came out.

    The heroic Green Goblin

  4. Re: Blue Beetle's Disads?

BB had heart trouble which could be worth some points. He was also a compulsive eater. I actually saw him make his ego roll when fighting in a mall food court. First to enter, then again when he passed the tex mex place. In love with Babs would be a good one, he would go to any length to help Oracle, even to the detriment of his company. I think you should have enough disads there.

  5. Re: Monster Hunter Campaign?

Did you want editing? It seems fine to me, there's some grammar errors and a little re-arranging might improve the flow, but it's definitely quality enough for DH. Also need to trim some words, with your permission, I'll go over it and then I can e-mail it back to you, maybe I can help.

  6. Re: Spiderman Writeup

I'm not sure if it was at the same time he gained the spider/insect empathy and organic webshooters (honestly, what's the difference?), but I have heard people mention his strength as increased to fifteen tons. Which, strangely enough, makes him quite a bit strong than Venom, the bigger, meaner Spider-Man. I wonder if they'll increase his strength as well.

  7. Re: Ridiculous things in comics that you don't mind.

I trip over that whole "recognizing people out of context" thing in real life all the time. In fact, if they'd ever said something about Clark using Super Voice Modulation or something to disguise his voice when he's in costume, I actually wouldn't have to suspend disbelief very much at all... except the part about him keeping his distinct voices straight 100% of the time under stressful conditions.

Makes you wonder what happened whenever Clark called anyone on the phone. "Hello?" "Superman?!?" "No, this is Clark Kent. I just sound exactly like him. Just picture my glasses, okay?"

Have you read All-Star Superman? It's amazing how Quitely manipulates Clark/Superman's posture to give him two very distinct looks. Clark is a pudgy, slouching slob with his messy hair and Superman is all barrel-chested, square jawed glory with his perfect spit curl. Makes me wonder if you slowed down his superspeed change, you'd see him hellah primpin' that ****!

  8. Re: Teen Titans (TV)

I did clix last year. I want to try something else and I don't feel like buying, painting and basing the cast and villains like I did for the X-Men. And I had to make some of the X-Men and probably would have to make some of the Titans' villains. But mostly, I think these little 1.5" figures really capture the feel and spirit of the show, the clix recall the comic series (the regular one, not the one based on the show)

  9. Re: Ridiculous things in comics that you don't mind.

I don't mind Spidey's horrid costume changes. Accepting the black costume, which is my favorite, and the future spidey jacket, which I thought was clever, his costume changes are ridiculous. Steel Spider anyone? And my new personal favorite worst costume: IRon Spidey

    Scroll down about halfway.

  10. Okay, I've been inspired by the Teen Titan toys that are about 1.5" in size and are arranged on cardstock to look like pages from a comic book.

Inspired to run another young players game at an upcoming Convention using these figures.

I looked back for Michael Hopcraft's write ups and couldn't find them or at least couldn't find them not written in HTML.

I was hoping people around here could give me suggestions, advice on Titans cartoon lore and their villains, power builds, even complete write-ups if you're interested. Maybe someone could translate that Michael's write-ups back to legible. (I'm sure someone could do it a lot quicker than me)

After a little time and some work on my own stuff, I'll post the completed versions I'll use at the convention. All input is GRRRREATLY appreciated as I am only passingly familar with the Titans in this incarnation, but I figured kids would dig it.

After the convention, I'll post a recap of how it went because I wish I'd done that last year. It was very fun.

  11. Re: All-New Iron Age Zoo Crew?

Amazing, given that you were saying it literally only five or six minutes ago.

So again, what did I "misinterpret"?

Edit -- And no, posting those articles did not prove that they have held those positions for *only* six months. What you have proven is that they have held those positions for *at least* six months.

Given that I remember DC's panicked reassurances that 'it will get brighter! the darkness won't last! etc. etc. etc.!' coming about the time that the negative reaction to IDENTITY CRISIS started... which was before it was even halfway finished... your claim, even your re-re-re-re-revised claim, is still wrong.

What are you, stuttering now? Or is that more vitriol coming out of your keyboard? I didn't revise anything, you're arguing conjecture and opinion and all I'm trying to do is establish a fact about a specific point. And at least you deigned to participate in that with your hair splitting masterpiece "at least six months."

Honestly, it wouldn't be very good news if it wasn't new when it was published, would it? So lets say Didio sat on it for a little while and somehow, it doesn't get leaked out. Would he sit on it for a year and half? Why? If you're going to tell me all I've proven is its been at least six months, you should explain your logic in assuming its been more. Or better yet, why don't you go find an article two years old saying that Geoff and Grant are entering into contracts as creative consultants.

I won't enter into a debate with you about my personal theories and interpretations because they are diametrically opposed to yours, you get very nasty and I don't enjoy it. And you know what? Unlike you, I believe that your POV is valid and plausible, I just don't share it. So I'm really not very motivated to participate in a heated discussion about an issue I'm just not all that passionate about.

But hey, why don't you call me wrong a few more times, roll your eyes and tell me how contemptible my post is.

  12. Re: All-New Iron Age Zoo Crew?

I can't imagine where I could possibly have gotten the idea that you were saying that DC was going to turn things around from the current darkfestorama. Nope' date=' I was just making it all up and stuffing it in your mouth.  [/quote']

Dude, I have officially totally lost track of what the heck you're talking about.

Edit: Wait I think I've got it now.

Okay, how we interpret events going on at DC is up to us. But what I was saying was that Geoff Johns is now in creative control of the entire DCU universe along with Grant Morrison and with this central vision to guide it, the DCU is headed in an exciting new direction. I guess whether or not it is exciting is also debatale, but sales seem to suggest someone is excited.

In a separate thought, I guessed they intend to eventualy reach a healthy balance between light and dark.

Then you said that they've been in charge for the last two years and it just keeps getting darker.

So I posted articles that prove that they've held their new positions for a little over six months, that's all I was arguing.

Now as far as whether or not my guess is right or wrong, we'll just have to wait and see, but the point you've failed to concede or address is that Johns and Morrison have been contracted as creative consultants to steer the DCU much more recently than two years ago. However, you seem to still be debating whether they are headed into the light or deeper into the darkness, which I am not prepared to go into as it can go on forever and ever.

  13. Re: All-New Iron Age Zoo Crew?

 Making up stuff and then putting it in my mouth is contemptible.

Not admitting you may have misinterpreted what I said or (god forbid) misremembered something and instead obfuscating the point by making derisive commentary is weaksauce. (and rolling your eyes is just silly)

And making a conjecture based on past behavior is not putting words into your mouth. This is:

I hate comics' date=' god knows why I read them.[/quote']
  14. Re: All-New Iron Age Zoo Crew?

John was one of the three big noises on the 2003 'steering committee' that came up with the whole Countdown/Crisis 'new direction' in the first place' date=' so my point stands -- the dude you think will harbinger a change in tone away from this dark crap is one of the dudes who masterminded the *last* change in tone *to* the dark crap, so...[/quote']

If by "point stands" you're saying "I'm right" then I have to disagree, because what I was saying was that Geoff Johns was given a new position as creative director less than two years ago. I've provided quotes that confirm it. Now we may have a miscommunication on what exactly I meant when I said that Geoff Johns and Grant Morrison are directing the DCU, but I believe I've clarified well enough now. So my point stands.

DC Editorial has been making this same promise repeatedly, over and over again, since about month #3 of IDENTITY CRISIS.

And over and over again, said promise has failed to deliver. Instead, it only got darker with every step.

I can only be told to 'wait and see!' so many times, and disappointed so many times, before I go 'tell it to the Marines, old comics fans ain't buyin' it.'

Please, if they said it once you'd be saying the same thing. And what do you mean by "old comics fans?" Physically old or length of collecting? I've been collecting for twenty years and I believe that DC is heading in a new direction.

Have you ever heard the phrase "It's always darkest before the dawn?"

  15. Re: All-New Iron Age Zoo Crew?

Check out his latest TEEN TITANS run. Superboy (Kon-El) has just abandoned all his friends to the Crisis 'cause he's too busy going all emo over having DNA from Lex Luthor (and never mind how much /that/ plot twist is impossible to logically reconcile with the multiple DNA tests Kon had done before...).

Him also the same dude whose JSA run has recently had depresso fest 2005.

Geoff Johns used to write really good heroic comics, yes...

    ... several years ago. :(

That sounds like a personal taste issue and since I don't like Teen Titans either, I'll agree with you on Titans. But I like what Johns is doing in Crisis.

(And I think I will nevermind how illogical the DNA thing is...

    ... even if you won't)

What new creative policies would these be again?

Please note, Geoff Johns, et al. were -- at least, according to the promotional materials for "Countdown To Infinite Crisis" -- handed the reins re: direction two years ago. So, if DC be believed, these are the very same people who plotted out "Identity Crisis", "Countdown", and "Infinite Crisis" in the first place!

So again, new creative direction of which? According to DC, everything that's happening now has been planned for years -- by some of the same people you're saying will save us from it.

Though neither the writer nor DC haven’t officially given Johns a title, the writer has entered into an editorial/consulting agreement with DC through Crisis, which is seeing Johns take a more active role in helping to shepherd the characters of the DCU both into the coming Crisis, and out through the end, seven months later.

That's what I was referring to. I've read articles saying they've been planting the seeds for the Crisis since two years ago, not that Johns has been officially charged with leading the DCU into a new creative direction.

As DiDio went on to recount' date=' the ideas were just too good to waste, and he figured that he should just put Morrison to work in the DCU in a consulting/development relationship, similar in a way to what Geoff Johns has with the publisher.[/quote']

    There's what Morrison's doing.

These articles are a little more than six months old.

I've got no issues with Countdown or IC. I haven't read IDC, but I'm obviously enjoying the stories that it kickstarted. But I also feel that those stories are crescendos to DC's grim 'n' gritty days. I think when the dust settles, things will be more balanced between lighthearted, optomistic storytelling and realism.

  16. Re: All-New Iron Age Zoo Crew?

I was wondering about this myself in the context of Infinite Crisis. These are the same writers and editors who brought us whiny' date=' *****y, unheroic heroes, torture of sidekicks, unpunished crippling of heroines, crap writing, worse art, etc, etc. These guys don't know anything about what makes a comic book worth reading. I have no faith at all in their ability to turn around and start producing superhero books worth reading.[/quote']

That's an awful big brush you've got there. The specific writer responsible for this Zoo Crew story is Geoff Johns. Now I think the general consensus on this guy is his heroes are heroic, I've never sen him torture a sidekick or cripple anyone.

I think its very brave that DC has recognized that they may have gone too far in an effort to add emotional weight and resonance to their characters and are willing to comment on it in their comic books. I mean, how often have we seen a comic book company say, "Oops, got a little carried away there, let's try something different." And it looks like that's the direction DC is going. Usually, they just pretend it never happened, sweep it under the rug and deny there was anything wrong at all.

They're making a big effort to enhance continuity by putting their top gun writers in charge of their creative direction and I think they've earned at least the benefit of the doubt by recognizing that things could be better and implementing new creative policies.

Now I was very disappointed with Geoff around this time last year. I dropped all his books, but he's since made a big comeback with his Infinite Crisis series and I'm back in his corner. I like what DC is doing right now. I think a lot of people do.
