  1. Re: Animal Sacrifice

One option could be to use the life force from the animal to fuel the magical ability. The bigger the animal, the more energy available. You could use the HP to mana conversion rate as a mechanism for rarity. For example, the blood of a virgin queen is worth three times as much as the blood of a pig etc. There are some useful guidelines for different categories of sacrifice and their mana in GURPS Thaumatology.

  2. Re: What value to limit additional Strength only for lifting and determining Encumbra

    Thanks for the feedback.

I'm converting stuff over from a D20 campaign setting for a Fantasy Hero game.

The racial description states "Dwarf base land speed is 20 feet. However, dwarves can move at this speed even when wearing medium or heavy armour or when carrying a medium or heavy load (unlike other creatures whose speed is reduced in such situations)."

More generally the problem is one of the cart horse that can carry heavy loads but not necessarily pack such a kick in combat. I'll go with -1.

  3. Re: Kill the Dude with the Thing

Seeing as this thread started before economies started falling over like a house of cards. Dare I ask the question - what would happen to the Dude with the Thing if no one wanted it? The safer and cheaper route would be to wait until the early adopters have paid a premium for the Thing and then pick it up cheap on ebay.

  4. Wow!

The PDF looks simply amazing - I can't wait for the hardcopy of the book to come out.

I'm really looking forward to reading this one. There is a lot of new stuff that I think will go a long way to helping people like me converting from D&D or converting stuff from D&D.

    Well done Steve!

  5. Hi folks

Just wondered when we might expect to see the print version of the Bestiary in the UK? I think the book has been available in the on-line store for around a month and I've spotted it on the web sites of a few US retailers. However, my main FLGSs in Burton, Birmingham, and London don't think it is out yet.

Is this another communication problem with these guys: http://www.esdeviumgames.com/index.php?

  6. Re: The HERO System Advanced Player's Guide

We have temporarily sold out of hard copies. Turns out the book was pretty popular. We're figuring out now how soon we can squeeze in a reprint' date=' but the pending arrival of Champions is making said planning a little sketchy right now. dw[/quote']

Thanks Darren. I guess this issue with the UK is one to watch for future books as well such as The Ultimate base.

  7. Re: The HERO System Advanced Player's Guide

It's been available to UK distributors for weeks now AFAIK. If a store can't get the APG' date=' that store either needs to talk to another distributor, or can make arrangements to buy from us directly if preferred.[/quote']

    Hi Steve

We have had this problem before in the UK with a Hero Book - Enchanted Items I think. The main, maybe only, UK distributer is Esdevium Games (http://www.esdeviumgames.com). Occassionally they simply have a brain freeze and overlook new releases and despite repeated requests from my FLGS in the Midlands they refuse to believe that the product exists. I think it was resolved last time by someone from Hero dropping them a line to remind them that the product has been released.

  8. Re: What if spells were like weapons?

I have also used a spell skill system for my conversion of the Conan RPG from Mongoose. My guidelines for sorcery can be found here:

    http://homepage.ntlworld.com/idmartin/Hyborian%20Hero/Characters/hero_conan_sorcery.htm

New spells can still be invented but usually by sorcerers way beyond the skill level of the PCs. Most PC level sorcery is learned from the fragments of knowledge that survived the great cataclysm.

  9. Re: EGO Rolls and PRE Attacks (2)

    Thanks again Steve!

It would be useful to expand the discussion to ask other GMs what they use EGO characteristic rolls for? I'm thinking the best thing to do would be to purchase +5 EGO with an appropriate limitation that would allow it to be used for EGO rolls and to resist presence attacks only (say -1).

  10. Hi Steve

Thanks for the short and sweet answer to my question. I probably shouldn't have posed it that way - sorry!

My follow on question is that in order to cover both types of intimidation, would it be better to buy bonuses to both EGO and to resist Presence attacke like fear? If one is likely to be more common, which is the most important to have? Also would it be reasonable as a GM to give a bonus to resist Presence attacks for have a stronger EGO characteristic roll and if so - what would be reasonable to do?

    Thanks

    Ian

  11. Hi Steve

I have a player character that has a strong will with a +2 Skill Level on EGO rolls. As noted in FRED, EGO rolls are intended to resist temptations, intimidations etc.

However, the character keeps getting presence attacked, which because they do not rely on EGO rolls means that the PC gains no additional benefit from the EGO roll bonus even when these attacks are obviously forms of intimidation.

Is there a discrepancy in the rules here?

  12. Hi folks

I'm writing up a spell from the Conan RPG, where the master sorcerer gains power points to use in other sorcery from a ceremony conducted with his acolytes.

Each instance of the spell cast by the acolytes effectively transfers power points from their own END reserve to the master.

I have interpreted this as an Aid from the acolytes to the master and not a Transfer, since every acolyte must cast the spell separately. What value would you assign to the limitation "Only Where Power Points Are Available in Endurance Reserve". I was thinking about 1/2 since in a few cases this would actually cap the level of the Aid?

    Thoughts appreciated,

    Ian

  13. Re: Official Release

Sure; there are two core magic systems that are presented in Chapter 4' date=' and I [i']believe[/i] that there are additional systems, but Chapter 4 was mine.

Atharian Magic: Based on the Zodiac, Atharian magic is an elemental base rooted in the signs of the zodiac, creating a tight, but flexible, magic system.

Sanguinary Magic: Blood magic used by the advanced Sanguinaries; it is much less dramatic than the more 'traditional' model used by the Atharians, but within their milieu, extremely effective.

I don't want to go into too much detail, but both systems were built from the group up for this setting. They also both contain leading short-story introductions to introduce you to how it's viewed & commonly used (Atharian) or how it operates in an actual fight (Sanguinary).

    Does that help?

Great thanks! Looks like I'll be collecting these too!

  14. Re: Official Release

Please don't go with Lulu - they sucked before and they've just gotten worse' date=' especially for shipping overseas. I find their business practices deplorable.[/quote']

I find Lulu shipping is okay for Europe if it is a softcover. It is my understanding that soft covers for Europe are actually printed in Spain.

I got a book from Lulu recently from a small publisher of D20 sword and sorcery ala Conan. It was good quality and delivered for a reasonable price to my home in the UK.

BTW could someone tell me about the magic systems in the OP's setting? I collect them
