  1. Fantasy Hero is a genre book for Hero System 6E (available in PDF). It is not the same as Fantasy Hero Complete--which is a combination of 6E rules and Fantasy campaign information in one volume.

If i bought fantasy hero 6E was I also suppose to automatically get the PDF?????

  2. Re: aggrovated over flash/Blindness

Straight hearing perception? 9+stat/5? no common sense thrown in?

So you can keep your full DCV vs an attack while blinded in a full combat situation just by making a hearing roll?

Thats borderline absurd. Lets try that in person. You cover your eyes in a noisy area, and duck the bow, or duck the spear Ill bring the bandaids and Mercurochrome. :)

Im getting discouraged with the hero system again. Its love hate.

I had other problems with the combat: attacking from behind aka running around opponents and stabbing them in the back (face palm), no zone of control for players, no opportunity attacks.

It seems to work better as a super hero game.

Im anxious to hear house rules for running a heroic fantasy hero game (vs super heroic)

  3. Re: Attacks of Opportunity (d20) in Hero

One of the problems you have is you are thinking in terms of D&D combat.

D&D combat is very generalized with each turn being 6 seconds long. This generalization makes a lot of assumptions and actions are not really accounted for.

In HERO comabat that same D&D combat turn is spread over 6 segments that are each one second long and each action is accounted for.

In D&D it is assumed that you do not really use your full action, but instead look for someone to move past or by you so when they do you strike at them. This assumption is not made in HERO. Instead you get your full action and if you take it all you cannot react.

So, how to do "attacks of opportunity" in HERO. Teach, tell, show, your players that when they think someone is going to go by them they need to "Hold their action" so when the person moves the PC can interrupt their movement and strike.

This way follows HERO rules and is realistic.

If you don't want to follow HERO rules or want a very cinematic game than just rule that anytime someone moves in a "threatened hex" the person gets a free attack.

It comes down to the fact that the two systems module combat very differently. D&D generalizes and assumes more. HERO assumes nothing and for the most part considers things very realistically. In a real fight you don't get attacks of opportunity unless you are waiting to specifically do them.

And likewise, if you are in the middle of a hand to hand combat with some one, and you attempt to run 4 meters in combat to behind him, your target is likely to hit you while you are trying to run around him.

I think if an unengaged (fantasy trip reference) person is standing in a hex, and another person crosses his path, he is likely to be the target of an opportunity attack.

  4. Hello, I ran a fantasy hero game last night.

I was running one of kestrelarts dnd conversions and one of the npc's had

    a flash/blindness attack.

One of my players stressed to me that being blinded in hero terms meant that

his attack was at half ocv, but since he made a perception roll his dcv was only

at -1. Had he not made his perception roll he would have been at half dcv.

Im thinking to myself: who can make a sight perception roll while blinded?

Isnt that an auto fail? The he explained that its a HEARING roll.

Reason kicked in again and returned with: you are an a room, blinded with full fledge combat

how can you distinguish sword slashes from ranged attacks to the giant spider trying to bite you?

he was very adamant about it and pointed at the rules repeatedly.

I still maintain blind is half ocv/half dcv. Its a very powerful attack but at the same time it was A) very rare, never used before and B) area effect.

Can some one help me out here?

  5. Re: Is Hero Resource Kit still valid?

The only rule change that really affects the usefulness of the screen itself is the abolition of the HERO Hex equaling 1" or 2 meters. 6e just deals in meters now (6" Running is now referred to as 12m Running). It's a good screen otherwise. There's another free HERO GM Screen available here: http://fitz.jsr.com/roleplay/herosystem.html

ok. so when we spend 2 points on running we get 4 meters or 4 inches.

Each hex is 2 inches and each hex is also 2 meters?.

    1 inch = 2 meters = 1 hex.

    Did i get this right???

    Im sooo soo soo confused.

  6. Re: House rules: speed, height advantage, gang up bonus, facing, dodging?

let me reword that for you...

In hero games we have SPEED, which translates to multiple attacks in 12 segments.

In TFT there were only 1 attack per turn except for the fellow with high dex and a bow. He got a second bow shot.

We are not playing TFT any more but I would like to trim down the speed difference between characters.

If players are speed 2, 3 and 4, which i hope they are not, i could reduce all attacks by one so that:

2 of the players gets 1 attack per turn, another gets 2 attacks per turn and the last gets 3 attacks per turn...

now if i could further change that to something like... each subsequent attack would be a half action or a static action must attack where you were standing from, or do up to a full move.

    How does that sound?

  7. Re: Do any of you still play 4th edition and FH Circa 1990?

i still use the -1/3 when i cant find the range chart, i like it because it reminds me of TFT :)

A neat Change to -1/3 is first 3 hexes free and then -1 for every three after that.

I use a combination of all the last 3 versions of the game. I am trying to move to character building using 6e, becaue i like forcing the players to buy ocv, separately, and having the combat stats (stun, body, end) not redependent on dex, str, or con.

  8. Re: A Question of Balance & Lethality

    i

Shout out to Montreal, Plattsburgh, NY gamer here.

    ...

Initial Characteristics where restricted so that they couldn't dump all their points into one or two stats and I instituted rules to govern how often a stat could be increased in game time. This made a more logical progression in stats instead of everyone starting out with STR & DEX 20, OCV & DCV 7 and SPD 4.

Combats where dangerous and fun and usually fairly quick...

So what are your guidelines for putting points in characteristics, skills, powers talents?

I recall that fuzion/champion which i use to have laying around some where gave x in stats, y in powers, z in skills.

  9. Re: A Question of Balance & Lethality

Hum. I feel your pain. I use to run with the fantasy book in the late 80s. IT was great. Here's my advice. Just keep doing the way you were doing it. No kidding. I cant see handing out a deadly blow, or martial combat maneuver, just 'because'. I think the combat maneuvers are terribly unbalancing. Only 5 points to do an extra 2 damage classes? Go back to your old books and

Stick with it! BTW, if you can find original Justice inc, staple bound, theyve got great magic abilities (the medium) and great simple boxing maneuvers, for hand to hand non weapon dam.

  10. Feed back appreciated:

I am breaking my group into Fantasy hero from TFT/Fantasy Trip/Wiz/Melee.

There are certain things I like about TFT that makes it a lovely unit based tactical game.

There is a gang up rule that says a attacker gets +1 for each of his friends adjacent a defender

Height advantage: if Attacker is 3ft or above enemy, he gets +1.

Facing Front facing evenup. Attacking flank +2, attacking a back +4. This only works in TFT since all sides move, before all attacks and all attacks happen in Adjust dex order.

Speed.... TFT has nothing like this other than some critters have a second attack.

I think this would work well. Speed might give another attack against a foe without moving or upto an additional full move

Dodging an attack in tft forces attacker to roll 4 dice to hit instead of 3. I realize we have dodges and martial dodges in Hero games.

What do you do in these situations?

any other interesting maneuvers to add aside from the martial maneuvers?

  11. Re: Yet another D&D to Fantasy HERO conversion

one of my players is doing a lizard man from fantasy trip.

He chose strong, criminal, warrior, fighter.

The combat stats were through the roof: Str twenty something, 6 ocv 7dcv 4 speed.

    Can you fix that?

What else are you changing in your doc? I cant wait to see it.

  12. Re: Yet another D&D to Fantasy HERO conversion

well im glad to see you are still here.

I made up a half elf, criminal, rogue, and something else, and came up with 7 contacts :D

Can you fix that one, also?

There is a 'PR' listed as an attribute on one of your pages. Im sure you meant either PD or PRE.

I made up some more characters, and I must say even though Im a long time fantasy hero I really liked your creation book. Its not JUST for novices.

I have some serious beefs with 'hero' experts making up characters because some, not all, tend to max out characters rather than just build good working characters.

Sixth edition has taken care of most of the point shaving problems.

  13. Re: Yet another D&D to Fantasy HERO conversion

I have a question about building character under your supplement.

I have a wizard built from your:

    Half Elf race package ,

    Defensive attribute package,

    Wizard Class package,

    Commoner background package,

    No specialty package.

I noticed that inside backgrounds there is a package called ARCANE background but not for wizards... Who would use that?

    Same thing for divine calling.

Does any one else have any supplements like this? (aside from killer shrike<-honorable mention :)

  14. Re: Campaign Classics: Vikings

Michael: Your contributions are always AWESOME and right on the mark. Hope you are doing well. Regards. I have never seen the pirates book. That should be a hoot. All these books you are rep'ing for us, are version 6 compatible?

  15. Re: base 5 point stats? problems with that?

He played in my game a few years ago. He has good intentions. He is steadfast saying that the average person in the world has stats between 6-10. So we are stuck with starting at stat -5- and adding in up to 30 points. If you add them one for one evenly, then you come up with all 7's in the non figured stats, with a couple of points left over for endurance and stun. Stats of 7? sigh

  16. Re: Traveller Hero

I was about to post this...

"greets to you all. I was just wondering if you know what will happen with Traveller Hero. I cant seem to be able to buy it anywhere? Did it make it to Hard cover? was it only pdf?"

    So?

Where did you buy it? Was it hard cover or PDF??

  17. Need some fast and furious fantasy prison Island run ideas....

'The players are trapped on a jungle prison island, surrounded by a 3 mile mote of crocs aligators, and alisaurs, some pterodacs, and a host of unsavory as yet undocumented monsters. There is one monster that Bites heads of of humanoids. He is very jumpy and intimidating. He looks like the biped from bugs bunny cartoon: "monsters are such interesting people." The bat like people from the conan movie.

    besides the players there are:

3 groups of prisoners, all deposed honor guards of the human/orc/demon prince of the southern/burning empire.

Red orcs, the best in combat, but the fewest in number. Very superstitious, they follow a shaman.

Green Orcs (Standard orcs), Master fighters(current lingo: asymetric style fighting) highest population, hearty robust, fearlous: currently hosting the heroes stay on the island.

Chabursts, viscous and fearless, goblins. lowest in number, but cause fear among the red and green orcs.

The Chaburts were the princes favorite group till they were accused of trying to unseat (murder) him.

Currently the players are siding with the green orcs and on a special mission to kidnap the goblin chiefs wife and child. One of their players is also captured in the chaburts brigg.

Aside the rescue, I dont know what to plan for them. the Green orcs cmdr happens to be more slippery and slimey character wise than any of the other leaders. he has promised that he will help the characters escape if they help him settle a score, and try to steal the lead from the Chaburts for rule of the prison island.
