  1. Re: The DEATH of the HERO System!!!

And I thought I was an old gamer!:hail:

I've been a fan of the HERO system for years but after leaving NY and moving to Reading PA I've had a heck of a time finding a group plays it. So I've kind of been stuck with D20, D&D 3.5 and some Fuzion stuff.

:drink::( I WISH I WISH THERE WAS HERO GROUP NEARBY THAT COULD JOIN! :(:(

I've run D&D "white-boxed set"' date=' [i']AD&D[/i], Traveller, Space Opera, Star Trek: The Role Playing Game (by FASA), Twilight 2000, Champions (thru to 4th edition), Vampire: The Masquerade, and a hefty hadful of other "Game Systems". I've also looked into Star Wars d20, Valherjar: The Chosen Slain in recent years. I have been in the hobby for over 30 years. (Man...I'm old!!! )

Anyway, my good friend TheImperialKhan kept after me for a long time to look at HERO 5th. I had pretty much sworn off of role-playing, mostly due to some really bad experiences. But...TheImperialKhan can be persuasive (when he wants to be). Once more...I value his opinions (and he does have quite a few :snicker: ...sorry TheImperialKhan).

Anyway, I have come back to the world of the HERO System, and more appropriately Champions...and I am glad I did! I think I've always realized that the HERO System is probably the best system out there...It just took a very persistant friend to show me again what I already knew.

The HERO System is the best RPG system out there.

  2. Re: Alternate Fantasy "Earth"

For fun' date=' put one of the moons, a tiny one, in geosynchronous orbit. A geosynchronous moon has the same effect as a pole star for navigation purposes. As most people know, observing the pole star gives you latitude (assuming you're on the hemisphere that can see it). Observing a geosynchronous satellite can give you your longitude just about in the same way (again assuming you are on the hemisphere that can see it). Having a moon like this will make transoceanic navigation MUCH easier, so that intercontinental civilizations are possible without use of magical means. That way you don't have to be a wizard (or use wizardly means) to go from Europe to North America, which makes ocean-going barbarian raiders a more common threat.[/quote']

Oooooh Dude, I like that. :hail:

  3. My group and I have decided to develop a fantasy world which is a topographical carbon copy of our earth with a few exceptions which include but are not exclusive to the following.

    1. Magic or mana exists as an ambient energy.

    2. Unlike earth, this world is hollow with an entire otherworld at it’s center.

    3. Elves, Dwarves, Orks, Halflings, Humans and several other races inhabit this world

    4. There are two suns around which it orbits.

    5. Three moons, one at least which is habitable orbit it.

    6. The system also contains 10 other planets. One replacing the asteroid belt, but a huge asteroid belt lies just beyond where Pluto would be.

    7. “Mars†and “Venus†are habitable as are some of he moons of “Saturn†and “Jupiterâ€

Thing is I’m looking to see if I can find a map of earth and it’s continents which can be altered easily. Something in black and white with only major geographical features.

Of course I’ve listed the above elements of this world in the hopes of getting some input from my fellow worldbuilders here.

Any ideas or elements you wish to add will be appreciated.

The world will be borrowing elements from many sources of myth and fantasy literature to create an integrated and cohesive fantasy realm.

  4. Re: Is "evil race" an intrinsically rascist concept?

    Thank you for the sanity.

Oh bullshit. This is the same unprovable rhetoric that says heavy metal lyrics cause suicide, Christianity causes abortion clinic bombings, and D&D causes satan-worship.

No one is going to become a racist because of how the fictional migdilar are "treated". Such people who are inclined to racist behavior will be racist regardless of whether there's a race of bad guys in a roleplaying game because they are already badly wired (if you'll excuse the analogy), not because of the input from a roleplaying game.

  5. Re: Every good four color supers games needs:

The megalithic, amoral, corrupt corporate CEO who is untouchable by the heroes despite everyone knowing that he's as dirty as a pig in a mud pit. He of course seems to live in a penthouse level office in one of the tallest skyscrapers in Campaign City.

The equally megalitith, amoral, corrupt crimelord who hides behind the cover of being a corporate CEO who is untouchable by the heroes despite everyone knowing that he's as dirty as a pig in a mud pit. He of course seems to live in a penthouse level office in one of the tallest skyscrapers in Campaign City.

    CAMPAIGN CITY!! (

    I like that!!

    Can I use it??

  6. Re: Campaign Speculation: please read, comment

One idea you could use is to convince the offworlders that earth is lifeless somehow. Maybe using holograms or whatever the AI's convinced the offworlders that there was a massive nuclear war and everything is dead.

Then again there is the problem of those pesky primitive radios. But what about range? Maybe with a string of satelites around the earth they could create a jamming field.

The idea of AI's ruling the earth is one thing.

But what possible reason would they have for keeping humanity trapped on the planet? Wouldn't they be working to make things better??

For one by putting manufacturing offworld and developing sea beds into undersea farms to help feed humanity they might also alleviate or even eliminate hunger and pollution. And if the AI's are smart then wouldn't they be working a cheap clean energy source to power earth's cities and civilizations. Maybe if they keep the people happy, working and fed there won't be any reason other than a lack of freedom to fight the AI's.

Well. Every time I come up with an idea, you guys mercilessly pick it apart, telling me EXACTLY why it won't work the way I say it does. But I'm not bitter. It builds character.

Ok then. I'll concede that it is possible to send communications onto/off of Earth, but it is HIGHLY risky to do so. The Sky Ceiling will most certainly pick it up, and you're sure to be "subdued" then.

Oh, and this whole thing wasn't Mechanon's idea. First of all, this isn't set in the "official' universe, and second, it isn't the kind of thing he'd do. He wants to annihlate life, not conquer it. If he showed up, he'd take over the Sky Ceiling and blaze away. an remember, these AIs have the best interests of Humanity in mind.
