  1. Re: [Character] Makeshift

    Interesting. Some quick thoughts:

    Power-wise

His natural speed seems a little high for a guy who was simply a techie. It's about the same as a Special Forces guy at the moment. Perhaps incorporate some of it into the armor?

    Skills-wise

I'd probably give him Systems Operations - techies know how to use gear too.

Also he's described as an inventor, yet doesn't have the Inventor skill.

His specialty of miniturised power cells could be reflected in an appropriate science or knowledge skill.

Perhaps spend some points on a hidden room/lab in his house, and also the access perk.

A contact or favour with an ex-collegue from PRIMUS would be cool.

How did he track down Mantara? He doesn't have any skills or equipment that would indicate he could do this - not even a police scanner.

    Disad-wise

I'd consider some sort of heroic motivation Psych Lim and another related to his drive to "stop being a nobody".

Also maybe he 'hunts' powered armor villains (for obvious reasons).

  2. Re: What Have You Watched Recently?

They have that show on DVD now? Well, well -- I shall have to keep my eyes open.

BTW, this is off-topic but does anyoen around here remember a cartoon from the 60's or 70's titled something like 'Melvin the Monster'?

    Milton the Monster?

"... six drops of the essence of terror, five drops of sinister sauce..."

    With Fearless Fly too :)

  3. Re: Enforcer84's Occasional HERO Content Depository

Hm...You have a point' date=' but wouldn't 4d6 x 5 be better then 8d6 at representing that kind of damage albeit that the defenses would more likely reduce the smaller hits? Of course it does all come back to what he wanted to represent. :D[/quote']

Comes down to 4D6x5 at 15 OCV against normal DCV vs 8D6, unblockable, at 12 OCV against 3 DCV too...

Against a tough normal (PD 8, DCV 5) and applying standard damage and average rolls...

Attack #1 will hit for all 5 shots (12 Stun a pop, 4 after defenses) for 20 STUN and cost 10 END

Attack # 2 will hit once (24 Stun, 16 after defenses) for 16 STUN (yes, repeating myself) and cost 5 END.

Against a reasonable super (PD 20, DCV 8) and same deal...

Attack #1 will hit 5 times again (12 Stun a pop, none after defenses) for 0 STUN and cost 10 END

Attack #2 will hit once (24 STUN, 4 after defenses) for 4 STUN and 5 END

Attack #2 makes more sense, but who says write-ups need to make sense?

    Especially E84's :P

  4. Re: Enforcer84's Occasional HERO Content Depository

It wouldn't be the same effect though' date=' because he could only hit the target once.[/quote']

Mechanically, yes. But the SFX could be that he hits a million times.

Not necessarily true, given the SFX of the entangle the character could still move such as if he were handcuffed.

True, but handcuffs have limitations on them that might preclude them from acting on the restrainable limitation. And even buying the power linked to movement would still make it a -1/2 limitation.

But explosion drops off damage whereas the AoE is the same throughout.

Yes - but given the name of the power I thought an explosion effect might be more suitable. It really depends on E84s design intent (which segues nicely into...)

Of course all the above doesn't take into account exactly what E84 was thinking as he made the character so you could be right in your suggestions.

All true enough - was just offering suggestions :)

  5. Re: Enforcer84's Occasional HERO Content Depository

A couple of comments so far. Firstly regarding this power:

20 6) Flurry of Blows: (Total: 30 Active Cost, 20 Real Cost) Hand-To-Hand Attack +2d6, Autofire (5 shots; +1/2) (15 Active Points); Hand-To-Hand Attack (-1/2) (Real Cost: 10) plus +3 with OCV (15 Active Points); Linked (Flurry of Blows; -1/2) (Real Cost: 10)

You do realise that under the rules for applying STR to advantaged Hand-to-Hand attacks that this power would max out at 4D6, right?

A different way to build it for the same effect would be:

+3D6 HA, Area Effect 1 Hex (Accurate), 0 END (Active 30pts, Real 10, Max Damage 6D6)

Or even drop the 0 END and make it +4D6 HA, 1 Hex Accurate (Active 30, Real 20, Max Damage 8D6)

    Secondly, this power:

    22 8) Anti-Friction Protection: Armor (8 PD/10 ED) (27 Active Points); Only when Moving (-1/4)

Would Restrainable be a better disad to apply? Meaning that it wouldn't work if the character was grabbed or entangled (which would strangely enough mean that they weren't moving :) ). Also I feel that it should be applied to many of the character's powers for the same reason.

    Finally, this one:

4u 8) Sonic Boom: Energy Blast 6d6, Area Of Effect (6" Radius; +1 1/4) (67 Active Points); Must Pass Through Intervening Space (-1/4), Limited Power Does not work in a Vaccuum (-1/4)

Did you consider building it as an explosion instead? Maybe even double knockback too? (Same cost then).

I like the idea/concept and the character - I'll be interest to see how it pans out. Also I'll revisit after some more thought - that was just some initial noodling.

  6. Re: The NEW Champions of Vancouver -- What Would You Like To See?

    PC Reminders:

    1. No Complex Power Builds

    2. No Loners

    3. No Spot Defense

    4. Do Not loss GM Handouts (Hint: They will be posted on the Campaign Thread)

    5. Bribe the GM with healthy treat for Bonus Experience Point Awards ;)

I'd add a requirement for a 'heroic motivation' Psych Lim to the must haves or this bit. It always is a good thing and helps keep characters focused and helps villains manipulate them:sneaky:. Very in keeping with 4 color style.

  7. Re: Question: Chi Power Defense

I thought that HTH combat levels only applied to melee attacks anyway.

I thought so too, except in one case:

I thought you could apply 5pt HTH levels to Dodge and have them count against ranged attacks that way.

e.g. 3 levels with HTH plus a normal (non-martial) dodge equals 6 DCV vs all attacks.

  8. Re: Quote of the Week from my gaming group...

From the Knights of Justice (Champions) game:

We've just fought some cultists and Cold Sun (ice-based speedster) has skated ahead/down to the next chamber. He has attacked a couple of guards and then hears a roar. He turns and...

GM: You see a large creature towering over you... large powerful legs... reptilian, crocodile-like scaly skin... dark red in colour - like congealing blood... sharp, powerful claws... long sinewy arms... a large mouth filled with sharp teeth - a LOT of sharp teeth...

Cold Sun (wanting to roll a knowledge skill to maybe identify it): Gypsy folklore?

    GM: It's not a gypsy

Same game, later on. Cold Sun is doing multiple move-bys on two guards at a time, but rolled an 18 to hit the second one so skids along the ground and winds up being brutally clubbed with a rifle. His next action:

Cold Sun (to self or OOC): Let's just try that again... hit one and run into the butt of another...

  9. Re: Repercussions of a VIPER Assault on PRIMUS (S-Squad, STAY OUT!)

I agree with some of the above. Windchill is a deadman walking as far as VIPER and the local PRIMUS outfit are concerned. And probably knows it. And probably knows that the only people who can protect him are the PC heroes.

I don't think an all out visible war on VIPER would occur except in Chicago. I do think PRIMUS would activate and direct its Black Ops Unit to focus on VIPER in all locations.

PRIMUS doesn't have a Black Ops Unit I hear you say? Sure they don't ;)

  10. Re: You know you've got problems when...

Sounds like your getting hosed. I mean' date=' its not like he *doesn'* know your not a brick.[/quote']

Isn't happening now, but has happened in the past. And it's more a case of habit rather than maliciousness. Good thing that character had skill levels and a martial dodge, I can tell you.

  11. Re: You know you've got problems when...

You know you've got problems when... the GM makes all the supervillains attack you first in combat because your characters are usually really tough bricks.

You know you've REALLY got problems when... you've decided for a change to play a highly trained normal with minimal armor and normal characteristic maxima.

  12. Re: Ykygpw____ykyrgpw

I said what I said, meant what I said, and chose to say it that way.

I was not unduly harsh and clarity did not suffer from platitudes.

I prefer frankness to wringing my hands over being politic.

And, responding to nerd-gibberish with a wry zinger is hardly a social gaff.

I regard the excessive use of jargon as rude to layman, new-comers, and those who love clean language.

Personally, this trend (i.e., "WWYCD") is a part of the boards' self-ordained "l33t" speak. Its an exclusionary, cliquish form of geek-jargon that caters to elitist nerdy shmucks. Its only efficient for the old timers, and even among the old timers are those who find it annoying. When I saw this thread's title I honestly thought the boards had been spammed by a computer program spewing gibberish. I'm not trying to be harsh - that was my initial reaction. It was meaningless. If people can't understand you, what purpose does the language serve? I won't go into histrionics and bemoan the downfall of society because its not that bad, but its a good step towards becoming post-literate and putting on a Tower of Babel reenactment.

New from White Wolf: Geek: The Babbling.

Based on all you have said, why not start a new thread to discuss the issue? You're obviously passionate about it, seem to have a lot to say on the matter, and others appear to share that passion.

  13. Re: Regrettable Disads

I've seen Vuln: 2x STUN AND BODY from technology from another player. Turns out he was just a Champions remake of his favourite D&D PC wizard - with similar kinds of restrictions on his spellcasting. Was apparently 20th level or something - pretty powerful anyway.

Unfortunately the GM had a thing for powered armor villains and... well... SPLAT :)

Gee, that was 60pts of disads well gained, wasn't it?

  14. Re: The Things That I've Learned Facing Bricks

As the old article goes' date=' "CON builds character."[/quote']

And the toughest brick I ever built had CON equal to his STR (60 and 60). Sure it cost 150 pts back in the day when you had a total of 250pts, but the dude would not fall down easily and never got stunned.

(Sorry - I lie. Stunned once. Move-by on the bad guy in a plane - both went through the side of the plane and fell. Brick couldn't fly - leaping only. Hit the ground eventually for 30D6. That stunned him.)

I think he also had 20 dex and 4 SPD... only had about 15 pts of skills though (or was it 9?)

Now days that is incredibly affordable, and just as useful.

  15. Re: The Things That I've Learned Facing Bricks

If you are faster/higher DEX - holding your action until after the brick has acted is incredibly useful in team situations.

A 2D6 Ranged Killing Attack and Find Weakness with RKA at 13- and +5 with the RKA (60 AP total) can be much nastier than a straight 12D6 EB (also 60 AP).

NNDs/AVLDs and patience are your friends.
