  1. Re: Building the Animated Justice League

Now to beat the dead horse some more. Personally can't convince me he has even a 20 STR. Really it all depends on your campaign scale. Mine is closer to Cassandra's but different higher level approaches are just as valid. My homage in my game exceeds 20 in IN. EGO and PRE but nothing else and not even 20 s in everything else except DEX.. Works in my campaign but would be completely pathetic in Enforcer's.

    My homage has a 19 STR, 20 DEX, 19 CON, 16 BODY, 23 INT, 20 EGO, 20 PRE, and a 16 COM.

In Enforcer's game she wouldn't even be a good sidekick.

  2. Re: Justifying Playable SPD

I've never seen any need to do so because IMO making SPD and/or DEX arbitrarily lower simply reduces granularity.

The tendency to favour the "One less than a multiple of three" DEX scores that many players (including myself for several years) have reduces granularity. I suppose that may be one of the actual advantages of the "decoupling" in 6e.

Losing granularity in SPD was a good thing for our group. When the fastest character had three actions to every one action of the slowest (and had 2.4 times as many actions as most characters) game play was skewed, spending a lot of time on one player. Going from 4-8 from 4-12 (making most 5s 4s, most 6s and 7s 5s, etc.) we didn't lose that much granularity... there weren't that many characters in the 8-12 SPD range. The speedster still seemed fast because he was going twice as often, but was less dominating.

  3. Re: Vehicle body

I think this is a part of the overall awkwardness of the Hero Systems super-heroic roots.

A tank is supposed to be really tough, yes. At least in most genres. But then in comics, the high-end brick types (Superman, Hulk, Captain Marvel, Thor, Wonder Woman and Wonder Man) tend to be able to smash tanks fairly easily.

But in the CU a 20 DEF tank can shrug off even Grand's 90 STR, unless he haymaker's repeatedly. That's someone with sufficient strength to support 15 million pounds. His inability to smash a tank, in that context seems odd.

  4. Re: The Namesake Thread

My namesake is, well, me, based on a joke started at my alma mater when we had conclusive proof that I sometimes didn't need my surname. Therefore I resolved to change my name to "Kenn" so I could still be "Ken, for short."

  5. Re: Justifying Playable SPD

Of course' date=' I won't go on again about the difference between Steve Long's write ups and Darren Watts' again. We have beat that long dead horse in previous threads.[/quote']

I missed them, and I'm curious. Can you point some of those out?

For a long time, until the mid-to-late 90s, I tried to keep to the typical published CU speeds, which is odd since I don't use the CU. Then when the DEX-SPD inflation problem started getting bad, I talked to myt players and we installed SPD limits. Everyone but the lowest SPD characters dropped back 1 SPD and 2 or 3 pts. of DEX. Our big speedster dropped from 12 SPD to 8.

Your milleage may vary, but it helped my campaign a lot.

  6. Re: Shape Shift into Water: Clever or Cheesy?

It's an interesting discussion. If the power was Shapeshifting into a tree and the character was in a forest, would you:

    1. Determine that opponents cannot tell the character from the other trees without using some other sense (similar to invisibility)?

    2. Allow opponents a PER roll to determine if one of the trees was a character (similar to stealth)?

    3. Allow all opponents to see that there is a character in the shape of a tree present because he did not buy invisibility (no effect on PER)?

Would one get the ability to conceal the forest from everyone else's sight? Not being able to see the forest for the trees, and all that.

Actually, I'd allow people to notice that the tree moved unless the character made a series of DEX checks. Unless the character was in Oz and had the ability to throw his own fruit...

...And if the Wizard grants our wishes,

    we could be Golden Delicious...

If we only had good fruit...

  7. Re: Your PCs might be Underpowered if...

    . . . They have an EGO of 3.

    . . . A writing pen is considered a major attack.

    . . . Their highest stat is 10.

. . . Paper is considered an impenetrable barrier.

I saw a write-up for a writing pen I saw had it as a 3d6 HtH KA. The largest sword in the campaign was 2 1/2 d6 HtH KA.

Clearly, the pen was mightier than ...

    Oh, never mind.

  8. Re: Comic Book (genre) Conventions that don't work in Champions

does the interdimensional heroes team up convention ala the silver age earth 1-earth 2 style team ups work in champions?

for those who are unfamiliar when DC revived the justice society in the 1960's the flash learned that jay garrick the golden age flash really existed but in an alternate universe later called earth 2[even though the jsa came first by the time that error was pointed out it was to late to correct it] would a toryline like that work in champions?

I did it once. It was... okay.

  9. In the spirit of the Smooth Criminal and the Wrath of the Ancient Pharaoh threads I've been thinking about a new character...

The pharaoh Hatshepsut was a woman but rather than being a queen she actually ruled Egypt as a man. ( http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2009/04/hatshepsut/brown-text.html )

What if she wasn't the only one? What if there had been another one, but with feathered hair, big teeth and bigger breasts? And what if she returns today; the Pharaoh Phaw-Set?

  10. Re: Sci-fi Champions

Actually' date=' Galactic Champions is too powerful. I was thinking more of the 350 pts range.[/quote']

And therein lies my issue with "Galactic Champions".

If one looks the source material, comics like the Legion of Super Heroes or the Guardians of the Galaxy, the heroes aren't more powerful than modern day supers. Yeah, Mon-el may be built on the "Galactic Champion" scale, but is Matter-Eater Lad or Polar Boy? Are ANY of Marvel's G of G on the Galactic Champions scale?

  11. Re: MegaScale Missle Deflection

In essence I'm trying to model something that we hand waved in 4e.

Alien badguys were firing a massive weapon from their starship, and our Captain Marvel(Billy)-knockoff flew the team's energy reflector guy into the path of the beam so the beam could be reflected back at the starship.

  12. Re: A new basis for PRE atatcks

There's different kinds of PRE attacks: general intimidation, inspirational leadership, barking orders. There's "Come on. Give me the gun." There's "Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."

I think that we should have separate Skills to handle each of these, and do away with the CHA, CHA+10, CHA+20, etc. mechanic. Only problem is, I still can't figure out how to do Mind Control.

Prince Humperdinck: First things first, to the death!

    Westley: No. To the pain!

Prince Humperdinck: I don't think I'm quite familiar with that phrase.

Westley: I'll explain and I'll use small words so that you'll be sure to understand, you warthog faced buffoon.

Prince Humperdinck: That may be the first time in my life a man has dared insult me.

Westley: It won't be the last. To the pain means the first thing you will lose will be your feet below the ankles. Then your hands at the wrists. Next your nose.

Prince Humperdinck: And then my tongue I suppose, I killed you too quickly the last time. A mistake I don't mean to duplicate tonight.

Westley: I wasn't finished. The next thing you will lose will be your left eye followed by your right.

Prince Humperdinck: And then my ears, I understand let's get on with it.

Westley: WRONG. Your ears you keep and I'll tell you why. So that every shriek of every child at seeing your hideousness will be yours to cherish. Every babe that weeps at your approach, every woman who cries out, "Dear God! What is that thing," will echo in your perfect ears. That is what to the pain means. It means I leave you in anguish, wallowing in freakish misery forever.

Prince Humperdinck: I think your bluffing.

Westley: It's possible, Pig, I might be bluffing. It's conceivable, you miserable, vomitous mass, that I'm only lying here because I lack the strength to stand. But, then again... perhaps I have the strength after all.

(slowly rises and points sword directly at the prince)

    Westley: DROP... YOUR... SWORD!

  13. There are vehicles, space ships, that in their write-ups in various Hero System books that have Megascale added to some of their long range weapons.

If I wanted a character, in Champions, who was capable of deflecting - even redirecting, those types of beams would she need Megascale added to her Missle Deflection power?

  14. Re: Animal Man or Vixen writup

I've been looking around the internet for a writeup of animal man or vixen, both characters with animal mimicry. Any one know where I can find either of these character's written up or perhaps a write up of a character with animal mimicry?

    I've checked this thread

    http://www.herogames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34874

and all the links that work with no luck. Anyone know some other good sites to find some DC characters

For DC characters, I like Susano's site: http://surbrook.devermore.net/index/

The one character in the RCU who had animal mimicry just did it with a variable power pool, no skill roll, 0 phase, natural animal abilities only(-1)

The old 4th Edition write-up is at http://www.rcuhero.net/valhalla/animus.htm but since the character died in '91 or so, we haven't converted her to 5e..
