Re: Characters: The Time Machine
Doyle didn't write The Time Machine' date=' HG Wells did.[/quote']And I know that perfectly well. My fingers obviously laid an ambush for me.
And yes' date=' that chapter is missing from the standard edition of the book. The chapter is titled "The Grey Man" and can be found in some time travel collections. I do recall reading it somewhere.[/quote']Thanks for the information. I'll have to look for that.

Re: Characters: The Time Machine
Tangential, but....
I don't recall the "kangaroo devolution" in the copy of Time Machine that I read. Is this from a chapter Doyle removed? Is there a more complete edition on the market?

Re: Campaign: The Turakian Age
Thanks for posting the account, and great kill on the two-headed giant.

Re: Stargate Hero
One of the things I like about the Stargate series is that they think about such things and made this one explicit. That's something I appreciate about the show, too. They're careful to make the universe "hang together," and they don't forget what's happened in the show's "past."

Re: Stargate Hero
If the Jaffa were interested in killing as efficiently' date=' I'm sure that Goa'uld tech would allow staff weapons to have a faster rate of fire.[/quote']They'd also add some sort of targetting device to those staff weapons. The Jaffa are about as accurate as Stormtroopers.

Re: Buckaroo Banzai Lives!
I dunno if it belongs in Dark Champions... yeah I do! Calling all Blue Blazer Irregulars! Here is a link to a news article on the new comics line of Buckaroo and the Hong Kong Cavaliers!
As Igor in Dork Tower would say: "IT MUST BE MINE!!!"

Re: Campaign: The Turakian Age
The three miniature blades Rogar tossed into the tree -- are those a type of magic item?

Re: Stargate Hero
I'm not skilled with Hero , but that looks pretty good to me. One question I have: Is his Tactics skill perhaps a bit low? Teal'c was a first prime, and I'd think he'd have a pretty good command of tactics.
Then again, the Jaffa seem about as tactically sophisticated as the Russian Army of World War One.

Re: [Compilation] "to Star HERO Conversions & Adaptations"
Great list. One typo I noticed: "Cowboy Beebop" should be "Cowboy Bebop."

Re: The Incredibles -- WITH SPOILERS
Good catch! Perhaps it was a signal of his newly-found level of maturity he didn't.Maybe. I tend more to think the camera cut away from the look on his face as he was about to.

Re: The Incredibles -- WITH SPOILERS
I don't see it in this thread' date=' not sure if I posted elsewhere but too lazy to look further just now - but I thought it was neat that Dash says "uh-oh" like his father does, a nice touch.[/quote']One place I thought they missed: When, after Mayor Mole announces himself at the track-meet and the whole family dons their masks, Bob should look at the camera and say "Show time!"

Re: The Incredibles -- WITH SPOILERS
As for sequels... the problem is, Disney owns the rights to this film, not Pixar, which means after Pixar leaves the partnership next year it'd be Disney making the films, not Pixar.
Finally saw the movie tonight. This is the part that saddens me. Disney's recent record has been, well, mediocre. I'd love to see Pixar do Incredibles sequels, but they don't seem to be in the cards, given the contract arrangements.

Re: Fourth Age Hero
Exactly right' date=' irishspy. Eosin's articles mentioned precisely the same thing.[/quote']Ack! It was right in front of me. No wonder I missed it.

Re: Fourth Age Hero
So there are at least a few Elves. The only places I can remember being mentioned that Dwarves live off the top of my head are the Lonely Mountain and Dale. I can't remember where Dain comes to the Lonely Mountain from' date=' but presumably it is from another Dwarf Kingdom.[/quote']There's also a Dwarf realm in the Glittering Caves at Helm's Deep, as I recall. I think Gimli talks of founding a colony there after the war.

One of these days, if you have time, I'd like to see the stats for some of the chararacters, NPCs, and critters.

Re: Campaign: Lomyrian Relic Hunters in Fahla
Years ago, one of the players in my AD&D 1E game could not come up with a name for her wizard. She finally wrote down "TBA" for "To Be Announced." Well, she never decided on a name, so the players decided for her. Since she was an Elf, TBA became "T'ba," which actually wasn't half-bad.

Re: Using Images to Change Environment?
Yeah, sometimes it takes while to grok some of these concepts. Happens to all of us, so don't worry about it.Now if you're addressing me and my remarks which you quoted, I'm afraid that that wasn't quite the point I was trying to make. I'm saying that the Special Effect of the Image Power can be the creation of light, and that that light can illuminate a darkened room
Ah, okay. I was missing the part about the special effect being the creation of light. The five-watt bulb of knowledge has just lit over my head.
Thanks!

Re: Using Images to Change Environment?
Not to get into too fine a debate on this - I understand and respect your interpretation of the Power - but from my perspective it looks like you may be drawing too close a connection between game mechanic and special effect. When creating an illusory image of something that someone can tell isn't what it really appears to be' date=' the penalty to Perception to see through the trick is the mechanic, but the SFX could be many different things. You could define a visual illusion as a hologram projected from a light source; you may be able to note inconsistencies which reveal it to be just a hologram, but it still exists as light. Similarly, and audible illusion of an army marching on your position could still be generated by sound. You don't have to create an "image of light" (I'm not sure that concept makes sense, anyway) to create an image [b']with[/b] light.Because of the senses that Images can be designed to affect, you could create an Image of a fire to heat a room that feels like it's heating a room (by including the Touch Sense Group) but wouldn't actually set anything on fire, melt frozen objects, thaw out frostbitten limbs etc. Those details could help you realize that the fire is illusory. However, whatever force is creating that sensory impression is still there whether or not you see through what it's creating.
Whether or not you agree with the rationale, Steve decided to allow the bonuses to Perception that would offset Darkness or make a brightly-illuminated object easier to spot, into Images rather than Change Environment. I'm not sure I agree with the decision, but I do think it makes sense conceptually.
This discussion has been interesting to me because, as a nearly-complete HERO newbie, some concepts have been hard to wrap my head around. Using Images to illuminate has been one of them.
So, if I understand you correctly, you're saying that using Images does not create the "image of light" that then illuminates a darkened room, but instead creates an image of a room that appears illuminated. Doesn't that then require that the caster know what the room and its contents look like beforehand, in order to create the correct image?
I can accept that, since it's in the rules and it's probably simpler than rewriting things, but it seems like ugly logic. (Which probably means I've misunderstood things. ) To create light, it seems that either CE or a minor transform would be better.

I hadn't read this thread since before GenCon -- my, they've been busy. My compliments on what sounds like a fun game and keep the reports coming!
