  1. Re: Pirates versus Superheroes

I'm imagining a game where the "heroes" are pirates, who pillage steal and generally act very badly; and the enemies are some sort of superheroes who intend to bring the pirates to justice. I can clearly see some specific mental images, some perfect still shots from the movie of the game so to speak, but I haven't the foggiest idea how superheroes could fight pirates and make it a fair fight.

    Help?

    Pirates with superpowers?

    Look out world!

  2. Re: Mystic Contacts

How about low level contacts with powerful and/or important magi from other dimensions? Such a group might have a more or less formal "network" to share knowledge amongst themselves.

  3. Re: Mr. Monster type campaign?

...Next run will be to investigate the apparent murder of a man who' date=' for some odd reason, tried to putty in all the corners of his room. It seemed he felt the need for everything to be smooth curves....[/quote']A very dark comedy film, "We're No Angles". ;)
  4. Re: A Golden Age Bulldozer?

It occured to me on the way home that' date=' as always assuming the PCs win, I've got the perfect setup to create Bulldozer. [i']Someone's[/i] got to clean up the fight scene, after all.

First off, can I keep the name? I know many of the pictures from the Depression show crews of men with shovels on construction sites, but CCC projects were designed to put lots of people to work. And I'm pretty sure all the players have seen Mystery Men, so calling him "Shovel" is asking for a jokefest :hex: .

Second, he's going to need a trim -- I like having him be weaker than the PCs, and this is a 250 starting point campaign. I'll be dropping his STR to 35 or 40, but any other ideas?

Third, IIRC pro wrestling wasn't around in 1938. Is this correct?

    1. The construction machine was around then so the name works in that regard. Given the historical context of it's origin (giving someone the "Bull-dose" was to beat them severely, as you would a bull), it looks appropriate for him anyway.

    2. Depending on how much weaker you want him to be, you may not have to do much else besides peg his stats down. I'd suggest reducing his HTH levels to just 1, to make him less flexible, maybe reduce or eliminate the extra Running.

    3. Pro Wrestling did indeed exist, though it was far less popular than boxing.

  5. Re: Amusing Conundrum ...

Anyway ... is it a bad thing that I metagamed' date=' even though I wasn't using it to get a tactical advantage?[/quote']From a role-playing perspective, yes. Letting OOG knowledge affect IG actions is something to be avoided. It's not a serious breach of gaming etiquette, though.
  6. Re: Musings on Random Musings

I get this e-mail from "Rachel"' date=' so I start thinking, "hmmm, I can't remember, does Rachel have my e-mail address?" and it starts out "I'm working late," and I'm thinking "huh, so?" then it descends into the usual spam. I hate when spam is good enough to hit a name you know and then start out reasonably enough to at least warrant reading.[/quote']"Cranky" thread:tsk:

    Kidding :)

But. what if.. Rachel is in league with the spammers! [dramatic strings]

  7. Re: Why the heck not?

I don't think of it as strange or unbalancing.

    ...

Second, if you have a character that has an energy blast defined as Mental Energy that uses PD or ED as a defense why are we suggesting that the correct way to build this is a STUN only BOECV construct and not simply have EGO be the targeting roll vs. DEX based DCV.

My problem with it is purely a conceptual one. If the attack is defined as "Mental Energy" (the basis for basing it on ECV) then why is the defense PD or ED instead of Mental Defense? Likewise, why is it an ECV roll for the attacker, but a DCV roll for the defender? If the attack has to be aimed, making it a physical attack, then the defense should be based on DCV, to represent the defender physically avoiding the attack.

Not saying that justification for such a build is not possible, just that I'm having trouble visualising it.

  8. Re: Why the heck not?

I was reading a thread here just now and it got me thinking. Why can't you define your whatever power as running off of your Ego OCV instead of your Dex OCV? You would still have to hit the targets DEX DCV.

Separating the ECV roll from the other aspects of Based on ECV is something I have experimented with before, but it's a little strange to have the defender's roll remain a DEX based one.
  9. Re: Advantage on STR that lets you lift the FF's Baxtor Building in one piece

Why shouldn't energy blasts be required to buy advantages to avoid Real World Physics?

I think this is a slippery slope that leads to an overly complicated set of rules unless you are very clear about the behavior of your Pseudo Real World Physics to your players.

I'd say that if you were inclined to toss such into a superheroic game, that it looks better (to me) as a limitation, rather than as the default.

:nonp: Wondering what most powers with the RWP limitation would be like.

  10. Re: Mr. Monster type campaign?

The GURPS Hellboy RPG has some good condensed back story for this type of game' date=' and the Hellboy stories, while a bit deeper than Mr.Monster, make good reading if you want to give this a try.[/quote']And Lobster Johnson is a good stand-in for Mr. Monster! ;)
