  1. Re: The 10 Most Disgusting Alien Civilizations

Well, I'm sure you could find the comics somewhere, Free I wouldn't know since the last Comics For Free guy is now cooling his heels in court. My computer folks tell me they can be found....As for the Novels, I highly recomend Alan Dean Fosters Original adaptation of the first movie, Alien. That book fils in a LOT of holes really. Steve Perry's Earth Hive, picks up after some of the Comics actually (Well in point most of the novels ARE adaptations of the comics and pretty easily found.....even at the Library.).....let's see....list is:

Earth Hive (by Steve Perry, Bantam, October 1992, ISBN 0-553-56120-0)

Nightmare Asylum (by Steve Perry, Bantam, May 1993, ISBN 0-553-56158-8)

The Female War (by Steve Perry and Stephani Perry, Bantam, August 1993, ISBN 0-553-56159-6)

Genocide (by David Bischoff, Bantam, January 1994, ISBN 0-553-56371-8)

Alien Harvest (by Robert Sheckley, Bantam Spectra, 1995, ISBN 0-553-56441-2)

Rogue (by Dean Wesley Smith & Kristine Kathryn Rusch, both writing as Sandy Schofield, Bantam Spectra, 1995, ISBN 0-553-56442-0)

Labyrinth (by Stephani Perry, Bantam Spectra, 1996, ISBN 0-553-57491-4)

Music Of The Spears (by Yvonne Navarro, Bantam Spectra, 1996, ISBN 0-553-57492-2)

Berserker (by Stephani Perry, Bantam Spectra, 1998, ISBN 0-553-57731-X)

Original Sin (by Michael Jan Friedman, DH Press, October 2005, ISBN 1-59582-015-9)

DNA War (by Diane Carey, DH Press, May 2006, ISBN 1-59582-032-9)

Cauldron (by Diane Carey, DH Press, May 2007) [1]

Included the ISBN numbers so you can just tell the Library to get them for you. Most of them are quick reads, well thought out. They range from brilliant to "well it was entertaining...." Fosters, Perry's, and Friedman's are the best of the lot but the rest are respectable and better then most of your Starwars novels for example......

The Books also read better then the coics that they are based off of.....

    ~Rex

Thanks Rex, now I've got some more good reading material.

  2. Re: The 10 Most Disgusting Alien Civilizations

yeah that's been brought up a few times in the comics and the novels as well. The Jockey's aren't nice people, but on that angle, it's more that the Jokey's discovered the Xenomorphs and said, HEY, these things are a Great Weapon!

In the novels, each author has taken a different approach, and the comics yet another. Scott even said the look of the Pilot, was most likely more Space Suit and the Jockey actually looked different inside. Still, if they do the Prequel, and they SHOULD do it just to fix the mess the series turned into, they can actually build up something that makes sense.

I would say though anything that uses Xenomorphs as a weapon would qualify as an icky civilization.

    ~Rex....

There are Alien novels? Are they any good and what are their names?

Also would the comics be available free online?

  3. Re: Honorverse

hah! I knew there were Wormholes somewhere in this FTL mess!!! :P Thanks Xavier!! You found the bits that I couldn't :D

Did no one see my post?!?

Guess that makes me chopped liver.

  4. Re: Honorverse

It's actually not muddled at all. Hyperspace has several bands as had been said before, and the higher "up" you go the faster you go relative to normal space. The trick comes with the fact that hyperspace is not "empty" there are gravity waves going through it. Before the Warshawski sail these were avoided like the plague as they would rip a ship to atoms instantly, but with Warshawski sails this all changed. With Warshawski sails it's possible to take advantage of the enormous power of the gravity waves to achieve accelerations never before possible, making these the best way to travel.

Wormholes are highly focused gravity waves, so powerful that maximum accelerations are almost infinity meaning that travel time between two nodes is about 8 minutes no matter the real distance between them.

  5. Re: Total NEWB gushing over how amazing this forum is

Thanx for the kind words Duane! I've always said we have one of the most enthusiastic, friendly groups of fans in gaming, and I think the contents of these message boards are the proof. ;)

LOL. Actually, when someone approaches me at a convention about writing for Hero Games, I have a couple simple tests to see if they're qualified (since what we primarily sell is rules, not "setting" or "feel," I want writers to know the rules really well -- otherwise it's way, waaaay too much editorial work for me). One is "How would you build a lycanthrope's ability to infect others with lycanthropy?; another is "How would you create a flashlight?". I don't want detailed write-ups; I just want them to pick the right Power. Many prospective authors fail the first test, and that's the end of that. ;)

The first one would be some sort of Transform and the second would be either change environment or images? Do I get a biscuit?

First, I love that series, now with that out of the way, the criticism.

Only problem that I have with this is the INT value of 8. I thought that 10 was adult human average, and that is what a Dragon of Pern's INT should be, remember, Dragons are as smart as humans.

    http://www.dailygalaxy.com/my_weblog/2009/12/december-27-2004-the-day-earth-survived-the-greatest-stellar-attack-ever.html

This looks like a weapon that can be used to take out entire solar systems...

This is clearly the result of an alien war, and one side's getting pwned, or desperate.:P

  8. Re: Give Tanks to the Lord

Well' date=' it's a model, so it's not going anywhere... On the other hand, it's fairly wide, so balance might not be much of an issue.[/quote']

I half suspected the thing was a model, it just looked too good, should have looked closer.

As for balance, imagine the thing trying to drive on a 30 degree slope, the thing would just tip over.

The thing's pretty, just not practical.

  9. Re: Spaceship Design 101

I forgot to include your first comment in my post, but I had been thinking the same thing earlier in the day when I was considering the starship design.

The flying bridge at the back is a purely cinematic touch, I think.

Perhaps, or perhaps its a holdover from real world warship bridges.

  10. Re: Cool, possibly vapor-ware, new capacitor tech

Energy is energy. A stick of dynamite, a full gasoline tank, a capacitor, and batteries all contain large amounts of energy.

You may have heard about the rash of computer laptop batteries suddenly catching on fire.

    http://gizmodo.com/182257/dell-laptop-explodes-in-flames

Automobile crashes are dangerous since leaking gasoline might catch on fire.

And if you stick a metal object into an electrical wall socket you could be killed.

This has implications for directed energy weapons. Especially laser pistols.

    http://www.projectrho.com/rocket/rocket3l.html#lasermagazine

I had heard about the laptop batteries, but didn't realize it was that. . .explosive:nonp:.

As for capacitors it was my understanding that without a resistor, they discharged all their energy at once, unlike a battery which does it over a greater period of time.

Lastly, Laser pistols, me want one!:D

  11. Re: Commandos Field Test ‘Plasma Scalpel’

    http://www.wired.com/dangerroom/2009/10/commandos-field-test-plasma-knife/

    http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/10/15/socom_plasma_blades/

Uses a "blade" of glowing ions to surgically cut tissue. This has been used in hospitals, but this new version is for field use.

That's frackin sweet! Almost like a Star Trekkian laser scalpel. I want one.

Wonder how it cuts other materials like wood or steel?
