  1. Re: (HR) Char/Skill & damage rolls

    Looks like you are recreating WEGs D6 System for skill rolls.

    yes, WEG is an inspiration.

    I've always prefered "rolling high" rather than "rolling under."

    (i like harp, rolemaster, d6, t&t, etc....

    HERO is great but i'm not fond of "rolling under" like in Gurps, Chaosium, etc.....)

    ICE is an inspiration too as you can see in the second house rule where damages result from the attack quality.

  2. DISCLAIMER => this can be seen as a heretical thread. But i'm convinced roleplayers are (can be) open-minded people :)

    Do you think there would be any technical trouble with those 2 house rules ? =>

    1. Converting Char and Skill rolls to xD6 (EDIT: in the WEG D6 way.)

    heroD6_4.jpg

    Thus instead of rolling 3D6 under 17 (+/-mods) i would roll 5D6 VS 11 (+/-mods.)

    There would be no change in modifiers. A +3 would keep being a +3 (added to the xD6 roll).

    Skills are computed as usual, then converted.

    For instance a skill computed from INT 15 and 2 skills levels = 9+(15/5)+2 = 14 ===> 4D.

    Opposed rolls would be faster than usual. (xD6 vs xD6, the higher the winner.)

    Attack Roll = 3D6 + Attacker's OCV - Target's DCV.

    eg. DCV = 6 ; OCV = 8 => Attacker rolls 3D6+2 VS 11.

    eg. DCV = 9 ; OCV = 5 => Attacker rolls 3D6-4 VS 11.

    As an option it would be possible to convert OCV and DCV to xD6 rolls by adding 11 and consulting the table:

    example :

    OCV = 8 ==> +11 = 19 ==> 5D+2

    DCV = 6 ==> +11 = 17 ==> 5D thus Attacker and Defender could both roll versus each other. (or the Attacker could roll 5D+2 vs 17 in order to use static defense.)

    Thus if DCV = 0 ==> Attacker would roll 5D+2 vs 11.

    You may note that this way an OCV 5 could hit a DCV 15 without using critical rules (i don't like using "3X1 or the like" critical rules. IMO that's too artificial.)

    (Without critical rule, untrained skill rolls need at least a +4 bonus to succeed VS a standard 11 target.)

    Fumbles could occur if "1" is rolled on every die. The more die are rolled, the more unlikely are fumbles. That's the way i see fumbles.

    -------------------fix------------------------

    EDIT : replace "11" by "10"

    updated version =

    heroD6_5.jpg

    ---------------------------------------------

    2. Instead of rolling damages i would use the success margin and the damage dice code to obtain the damage result : (EDIT: CANCELLED / not so good idea)

    heroDmg_2.jpg

    For instance: margin 3 and a 5D6 dmg code => 19(6)

    = 19 body for a killing attack or 19 Stun and 6 body for a normal attack.

    It's based on the optional rule page 382 : "Or, for every point by which a character makes his Attack Roll, increase the average damage of his attack by 10%" but in this HR the average values start at margin 2 instead of 0.

  3. Re: ~ All Out War~d&d Vs Hero Vs Palladium

    ~ALL OUT WAR~

    D&D VS HERO FANTASY VS PALLADIUM

    ITS A FREE FOR ALL NO HOLDS BARRED WAR BETWEEN D&D, HERO FANTASY GAMES, & PALLADIUM FANTASY...... WHO WINS? AND WHY?(please state reasons)

    May the best game win!

    You'd better compare FH to good games (Rolemaster 2, HARP, Hârnmaster, Ars Magica, Chivalry & Sorcery 4 , etc....) instead of ugly ones (D&D and Palladium are amongst the worst...so this is an easy win for FH.)

    D&D white box & AD&D 1st were mythical.

    but, face it, D&D is simply a very bad rpg system. D&D3 adds skills and a bit more homogeneity than previous editions but it also keeps stupid rules (eg: your bonus to hit increases with levels but your defense value stay the same. But in fact hit points are the real defense value which increases with levels. This means that healing potions heals your dodge/parry capacity and you automaticaly dodge/parry when you sleep. Feats are fixes to a deficient system and this actually leads to a munchkinized boardgame without inner consistency. D&D4 seems to be even more boardgame oriented.)

    If you're looking for an "old-school" FRP, you'd better play Tunnels & Trolls, Mythweaver (which is free) or the like.

    But if you want an "old-school" D&D-clone FRP, have a look to Castles & Crusades. C&C has the same inner stupid rules as any editions of D&D but without the feats/boardgame issue of D&D3+. C&C is not a good system, just a light coffee break version of the old D&D.

    ....but if you really want a good FRP there are a lot of possibilities => Fantasy Hero, Rolemaster Classic, HARP, Hârnmaster and several others.

    IMHO, to compare D&D/Palladium and Fantasy Hero leads nowhere.

  4. Re: Horror Hero

    4E Horror HERO isn't listed in the HG online store, and they do have entries for other 4E products, so I doubt it's available there. You'll probably have to look on eBay, Amazon, or used game retailers (I can suggest a couple of good ones if you like) to find it.

    i've found one at Noble Knight. :D

  5. Re: Is the Fantasy Hero book still in print?

    Of course not! That's a D&D spell!

    damn

    eat that =

    class Revenge{
      public final NiceBook FH;
      public static void main (String[] args){
          FH=HEROGAMES.getBook("FantasyHero");
          send_to_stores(word_of_command());
      }
      public NiceBook word_of_command(){
         try{
            return reprint(FH);
         }

           if(mental_control(philFleischmann)){
              return word_of_command();
           }
         }

         else{victory=True;}
         return victory;

  6. Re: Horror Hero

    Does this mean a Horror Hero 5th edition is planned ?

    I hope so because my main genres interests for Hero are horror (from Ghostbusters to Lovecraft), mercenaries, post apo and space op.

  7. Re: Computer translations of Hero that you would like to see

    IMHO, the good question is not what kind of genre would it use but rather what kind of gameplay.

    i love =

    - Rogue likes (Nethack, ADOM, Crawl, etc..)

    - Dungeon Master

    - Jagged Alliance 2

    - Thief: Dark Project 1,2,3

    - Fallout

    - Elite

    - System Shock

    because this kind of games are rich, full of possibilities, whatever there genre and whatever there visuals.

    Now have a look to Oblivion:

    - great graphics

    - huge world

    - but very poor possibilities. Interactions are very limited (using Havok physic engine is not enough ! ) and spells are infinite variations of a limited list of effects.

    I would not speak about console CRPG.....most of them offer less possibilities than gamebooks.

    My advice is => do not spend too much developpement time on packaging (visuals & sounds.) The video game market is full of beautiful but stupid games.

    I would play an intelligent Hero-based video game , whatever its genre.

    PS: do not make a MMORPG, this is a trap, there is no chance to survive. Rather create an honest solo System Shock or Fallout like.

    PPS: rather than voting for the genre i'd like to play, i'd prefer to say what genres i wouldn't like to play : Supers, Western and High Power manga like Heroic Fantasy. But if the game is good enough, i could change my mind.

  8. Re: Char rolls & SKill bases

    i think i must reformulate :

    Please forget 100% of what i've previously said.

    I fact i'm worrying about the effectiveness of HERO simulating small scales.

    I'm coming form games like Gurps, Rolemaster, Chivalry & Sorcery, etc where power scales are rather small and i must say i'm used to gamemastering low power campaigns.

    At the other end of the spectrum there are nice systems like Blood of Heroes (this system is really amazing) but i don't like super heroes campaigns very much. I prefer gritty survival.

    I'd like to use HERO mainly for

    - modern horror settings (from Ghostbusters to Lovecraft's mythos)

    - hard SF settings (much closer to Traveller than Star Wars)

    - post apocalyptic settings (Post-Apocalyptic Hero ? sweeeeet....)

    - mercenaries (Jagged Alliance like)

    but i wonder: does it make sense ? Is HERO precise enough for this typically human small scales settings ?

  9. Re: Char rolls & SKill bases

    i've recently bought Ultimate Skill (and the main Hero book, and a lot of other Hero books :celebrate)

    maybe i'm wrong but it seems that Ultimate Skill discusses about altering the base number (9), the char divider or the skill rank cost but each of this alterations seems to bring new problems. I didn't see the kind of modification i spoke about. (and i also speak about Char rolls)

    simply, do you think that saying that "Char rolls can not be higher than the corresponding characteristic" could bring probability/unbalacing troubles in this system ?

  10. Hello ,

    I'm a bit surprised that low stats give average Char rolls & Skill bases (i guess this is a very classic critic)

    So i wonder if there would be any trouble by saying, for instance, that a char roll or a skill basecan not be higher than the corresponding char.

    (eg. char 8 => 8- ; char 5=>5- ; char 3 => 3-, etc...)

    OR any variation of this simple idea, for instance, -1/ 2 pt below 9 :

    ...etc

    -2 => 4-

    -1 => 4-

    0 => 5-

    1 => 5-

    2 => 6-

    3 => 6-

    4 => 7-

    5 => 7-

    6 => 8-

    7 => 8-

    8 => 9-

    Do you think this kind of modification could be appropriate to HERO ? :help:

    PS:

    1. I'm new to HERO.

    2. Excuse my bad english.
