  3. My Superhero Universe: The Gatewood Scandal

In 1943 Lt. Peter Maxwell, U.S.N., was escorting Phoebe Elizabeth "Val" Kirk to Washington for a debriefing after her undercover mission as Valkyrie, a supervillainess working for The Fifth Column. Maxwell had known Miss Kirk since high school, and they were acting as a couple. A drunken Army Air Force pilot, Capt. Gordon O'Grady, made a pass at her, and Maxwell punch him in the face.

In 1972 Peter Maxwell was President of the United States, and Val Kirk Maxwell was his First Lady. Gordon O'Grady was his opponant in the upcoming presidental election. Concerned that O'Grady, a U.S. Senator, would discover his wife's activities as a supervillainess (albeit undercover for U.S. Intelligence), President Maxwell ordered a break in at O'Grady's campaign headquarters at the Gatewood Hotel to discover exactly what the Senator knew.

President Maxwell's Director of the Office of Strategic Services, Cassidy Young, discovered the White House connection with the break in. Young, who was the superheroine Columbia and Maxwell's commanding officer during World War Two, knew the truth about the First Lady. She also knew that reporters from the Washington Mail also had discovered the link between the President and the break in. In order to protect the First Lady, and to make sure justice was done, Young convinced President Maxwell to withdrawl from the race, and prevent his Vice President from getting the nomination.

While Maxwell was considered disgraced when he left office in January 1973, he was happy that his wife and true love was protected. He was even happier that O'Grady had lost the election to Cassidy Young's old friend, Stephen Decatur Clark.

  4. My Superhero Universe: Superhero Legal Status

One problem with the explosion of superheroes in the 1940s was how to best use them while maintaining the criminal justice system. Most superheroes and all crimefighters had secret identities, which made it impossible for them to testify in court. Further, many cities were reluctant to give costumed individual legal status for fear of lawsuits.

United States Senator Matthew Easton Fremont (R, CA), a superhero himself, came up with a simple solution. Offically superheroes and crimefighters became bounty hunters. The U.S. Justice System doesn't care how a criminal ends up before it. Superheroes stopping crimes in progress as they would be considered acting as "good citizens" and not responsible for making actual arrests.

To make things even more attractive to local governments, many wealthy crimefighters didn't collect the reward on the villains they captured, and that money went into the general fund.

That situation changed somewhat in the 1990s with the rise of the professional superhero.

  5. My Superhero Universe: USA Archcriminal Profile "The Clown"

    The United Superheroes of America

    Archcriminal Profile "The Clown"

The Clown is a theme villain using a low tech powered armor, with a wide variety of attacks available to him. While his appearance and complete lack of talent as a clown cause many to underestimate him, the USA believes him to be extremely dangerous.

A case in point is the recent examples of Athena and Minerva's engagement of the subject last fall. Minerva in her secret identity witnessed a mass kidnapping at Angel City University by the Clown and his hired thugs. While the talented crimefighter was able to free the hostages and dispose of the thugs with ease, she was temporarily blinded by the Clowns cream pie attack, and then entangled with his quick drying seltzer glue. The Clown then proceeded to use his hypnotic clown make up on Minerva's face, making her his minion.

Drunk with the power of Minerva under his control, he proceeded to make her perform superhuman stunts in front of the entire college campus. Athena arrived, and the superheroine was confronted by her mind controlled sidekick (and unknown to all, younger sister).

Fortunately Athena had contacted the USA and learned about the Clown's abilities from his Archcriminal profile. Instead of fighting Minerva, Athena threw her shield, Aegis, at the Clown, stunning him long enough for her to use a fire hydrant to wash the drugged make up off of Minerva's face. Minerva, freed of the Clown's control, took him into custody, and turned him over to the FBI.

Unfortunately the Clown manged to get some of his make up on his guards, and was able to escape. Because of his ability to control others, especially superhumans, The Clown has made the top ten list of the USA's most wanted. When located a call for back up is strongly recommended.

He even forced a scientist he kidnapped to come up with a number of gadgets for him to use on his "tour." Recently the Clown has learned hypnosis, and uses a special clown make up laced with a drug to help him take control of innocents and force them to enjoy his performances.

  8. My Superhero Universe: The Origin of Athena and Minerva

Before the Second World War, Stephen Decatur Clark, the man who would become the legendary crimefighter known as the Nighthawk, was captured by a Central American Dictator. Thrown into the vault of loot the Dictator had stolen over the years, Stephen was left to die after a savage beating. Determined to escape, he looked for anything that could help him do so, and Stephen found a lamp, and rubbed the dust off of it.

To his surprise a young woman appeared in a puff of smoke. She told him that she was a genie, that she would answer any questions he may have truthfully, and then would grant him three wishes. The woman, who's name was Metis, told him that she believed that Stephen was special because it was the first time in five thousand years that she appeared fully clothed (Metis would appear in whatever form was desirable to the person who freed her). Stephen asked her how she ended up as a genie, and Metis told him her life story.

Metis was the daughter of the King of the Titans, Cronus. During the war with the Olympians Metis fell in love with Zeus, and soon gave him a child, Athena. That was bad enough, but Metis committed the one unpardonable crime among her people. She used her powers to save the life of a normal human. As punishment Metis was trapped inside a magic lamp and forced to obey humans by giving them wishes. Most of the wishes were perverse, others met the greed of her masters, but in all cases the wishes led to the downfall of her masters.

Stephen asked her if she could bring back the dead, and Metis sadly said she couldn't. Then he asked the one question that no one had ever asked her. How could she be freed?

Metis was stunned for a moment, and answered that it would be Stephen's one and only wish. She would forget who had freed her, so she would never be able to repay the act of kindness. It would have to be a completely selfless act.

Stephen was about to wish for her freedom when she stopped him. She told him he might not be able to trust her, that she might be evil and rain destruction on humanity. Metis also pointed out that she was his only hope of escaping the vault and a long, painful , and lonely death. She suggested that he could ask for her protection, and then free her for the rest of his life. Metis would make sure nothing happened to him thereafter. He would live to be a hundred and fifty in luxary and safety.

Stephen wished that she was free, and Metis found herself before Cronus, transported back five thousand years. He was confident that her experience would turn her against humanity, and that she would rejoin the Titans, help destroy the Olympians, and bring about the enslavement of the human race. Metis, however, did remember Stephen (the part of her not remembering who freed her being a lie that Cronus had told her), and decided to save him. Cronus told Metis that if she left she would never be allowed to return. Metis asked him to put that in writing.

Stephen woke to find himself out of the vault, in the care of Metis. She no longer had her genie powers, but was still a Titan, and got him out of the vault with ease. After Stephen was healed he and Metis led the revolution against the Dictator. Metis, freed, parted ways with Stephen, and explored the modern world, and promised they would meet again.

Some years later Metis came to Stephen, and asked him to help her find a way to stay in the U.S.. Stephen decided to legally adopt her, and she was given the name Tracy Lee Clark. She moved to Empire City, and took over the Odyssey Club, a meeting place for adventurers located in ground floor of the Taylor Tower. Stephen asked his old friend Bradley Taylor to watch out for her.

One of the adventurers who frequented the Odyssey Club was James Barrett, millionare industrialist and explorer. Tracy was quite taken with him, and eventually married him. She revealed before their engagement that she was a superheroine named Titaness, but James was familiar with the need to do such things, his sister Julia being a crimefighter.

Tracy was vitually ageless, while James aged slowly but steadly, but when she gave birth to her first child some of her powers left her. Then she had another daughter, and a little more power was gone. Not enough to make her a normal human, but she wasn't as powerful as she was. To the surprise of her husband, this made Tracy quite happy. In a way it made life more precious to her.

Victoria gained her powers shortly after she entered college, and Tracy taught her how to use those abilities. Then Megan showed the same powers, and Victoria began showing her the way. All three women are concerned when young Matthew Barrett comes of age, and Tracy has recently began gaining a little weight . . .

  12. My Superhero Universe: World War Two Supergroups

The United Superheroes of America (USA)

The USA was formed in July of 1941, and was a reaction to the collapse of the League of Heroes. Nighthawk had been recruiting anti-Axis superheroes and crimefighters for several years, and was able to get them to work together and coordinate their efforts against mobsters, spies, saboteurs, archcriminals, and saboteurs. Nighthawk was elected the first President of the USA (he had intended that Ultraman fill that role), and Miss Freedom was Nighthawk's choice as Vice President. Charter members of the USA were Ultraman, Nighthawk, Lady Liberty, Minuteman, Starlet, Miss Freedom, and Columbia. The group continues to exist to this day, and currently has thirty members.

    The Home Guard

The Home Guard was a group of British Crimefighters formed after Dunkirk to prevent the invasion of England. The one true British superhero, the Black Paladin, resigned from the League of Heroes to lead the group until his assassination during the Night of Infamy. Britannia took over as leader of the group for a brief period, before it was merged with Eagle Squadron to form The Allies. The group never had more then half a dozen members, only one or two superheroes and the rest crimefighters.

    Eagle Squadron

American Eagle took a group of pro-Allied superheroes and crimefighters to England to help defend it against an Axis Invasion. At the request of the U.S. State Department all members were prevented from taking part in commando raids, leaving them on anti-invasion and sabotage duties. The group was later merged with the Home Guard to for The Allies. There were a maximum of six members at one time, most of them crimefighters.

    The Allies

After the attack on Pearl Harbor and the Night of Infamy, the U.S. entered the was against the Axis. The Home Guard and the Eagle Squadron were merged into The Allies, and it was plannned they would launch a massive strike supported by the United Superheroes of America to bring the war to a swift end (a.k.a. Operation Victory). The Nazi "Night and Fog Decree"and the "Commando Order" (which ment that enemies of the Third Reich would simply disappear and never be seen again, and where commandos would be executed, respective) were combined with the threat by all three Axis Powers to execute all POWs and use poison gas. The U.S. State Department and the British Foreign Office used all the influence they had to prevent any superheroes from taking action against the enemy in Nazi occupied territory until late in the war. The Allies did defend England against attacks from the enemy supervillains and spies.

    The Fifth Column

This organization was created under mysterious circumstances, and there is a great deal of speculations that it existed before it was used by the Nazis during World War Two. The fact that it continues to exist as both a terrorist organization and criminal enterprise lends credibility to this view.

Regardless, the Fifth Column during the war was made up of five supervillains, each with four archcriminals accomplices. Some were actual Nazi spies, but most were criminals working for personal gain. Valkyrie (a.k.a. Vahalla), Ice Maiden, Blitzkrieg, Gladiator, Countess von Kruel, and Soryu were known members. The group contained members of all three Axis nations, and could be found on any front, opposed by the USA and The Allies. Ice Maiden also ran the supersoldier program and was responsible for the creation of many future superheroes and supervillains.

    The Axis

Led by Hauptmann Asche ["Captain Axis"] this was the premier Nazi supervillain group of the war. Unlike the Fifth Column only Germans were allowed to be members despite the name. The group conducted raids on England and fought many battles with The Allies. All German supervillain members of the Fifth Column were also members of the Axis.

    The Centurions

Under the command of The Centurion, this one hundred member group of Italian supersoldiers defended their country using mystic armor and weapons. The group, while in theory powerful, was not as politically reliable as the High Command would have liked. Indeed, all members defected to the Allied Forces once Italy surrendered.

The Special Naval Strike Force and The Imperial Guard

These two groups of Japanese supersoldiers carried out attacks on Allied forces in the Pacific and on the U.S. West Coast. While they would work with other Axis forces, they would never under any circumstances work with each other. In fact, one factor which prevented them being more effective was a good portion of each was kept in the Home Island to prevent either the Army or Navy from gaining more political power. More then one battle was fought between the two groups, with all records of such incidents being suppressed to this day.

Background: Alexandria "Scarlet" King is the daughter of Niles "Scooter" King, the famed auto manufacturer, and movie star Cassandra "Casey" Cabot. King, who developed an interest in Ancient Egypt, began to collect items from that era. One was Cleopatra's Crown, which Scarlet tried on one Halloween, and found it gave her mental powers. Being a moral and well adjusted individual, Scarlet didn't use her abilities for personal gain, but to help others. When her father became the supervilain known as the Pharoah, Scarlet and her mother enlisted the aid of the Black Cat, a heroine who also shared an Ancient Egyptian origin, to free him from the influence of the evil god Set, who was responsible for King's transformation. Scarlet is currently enrolled at Kingston College where Dr. Catherine Ashley Tate teaches a class on Ancient History and Mythology.

Background: Dr. Catherine Ashley Tate was a young archaeologist who discovered the lost Temple of Bast, an Ancient Egyptian Cat Goddess. Tomb raiders tried to enter the temple, but Ashley defended it, being wounded in the process. Her blood touched a statue of Bast, and Ashley (as she preferred to be known) was bathed in an eerie white light.

The next thing she knew she was running across the desert to the camp of the tomb raiders. She attacked them, rendering two of the three unconscious in short order. The leader, the man who shot her and left her for dead, looked terrified at her, and Ashley caught sight of herself for the first time since leaving the temple in a mirror. She was some kind of half human, half cat. Her hands were clawed, and she could easily take the life of the would be murderer. Instead she punched him in the nose, and found herself back into human form.

Dr. Catherine Ashley Tate know fights evil as the Black Cat. She has recently a teaching position at Empire City University. The Black Cat has also been seen working along side Ultraman and Dryad, and is a long time ally of Raven.

Powers: Black Cat has cat-like strength, agility, and heightened senses. She also has amazing speed and the ability to heal from injuries. Her fingernails can slice through steel, although she's never use them on the living. She has developed a fighting style that uses her abilities to the upmost. Her bulletproof costume was a gift from Raven.

  21. Re: My Superhero Universe

Leopard's mental defense are due to her mental instability. The NND is a powerful sleep drug that takes effect slowly after contact. Most normal people would be stunned after a surprise attack, and pass out before they could react. Because it's absorbed through the skin, even someone with resistant defenses is vulnerable.
