  1. Re: The "real" Golden Age vs the "nostalgic" Golden Age

Wonder Woman would lose her super-strength if her bracelets were linked with a chain by a man. It was a reminder of when the Amazons were dominated by men.

Granted the Wonder Woman and the Amazons were really into loving submission to transform they enemies into friends.

Which was the big draw for her.

  2. Re: Golden Age thoughts

Golden Age heroes should be low level, 150+100 points, to reflect the more realistic expectations of heroes at the time.

Remember any powers could be used, but the special effects and limitations are what make them golden age.

Air Wave's powers, for example, could just be Teleportation limited to "Along phone lines."

In 1896 inventor Nicola Tesla was showing his latest invention to the H.G. Wells. He called it the Tesla Sphere, a device which could see other worlds. On one of those worlds the strange, hideous creates, had the ability to see Tesla and Wells. Tesla shut down the Sphere, crated it up, and developed a fear of round objects. Wells wrote of the creatures and what they might do in a famous novel.

    The creatures had other plans.

The meteor was in space for over forty years, and crashed on the East Coast of the United States, not far from the great metropolis known as Empire City. Ultraman, who had been in the public eye for six months, and who had developed a good relationship with the authorities, was among those who investigated the impact site.

The three war machines that sprung forth from the crater began to attack the State Police and National Guard personal. Ultraman launched a counter-attack, giving the other humans time to get clear. Against one, or two, of the alien war machines he would have been victorious, but three stacked the odds against Ultraman. The Man of the Future destroyed one of the war machines, but was stunned by a combined blast from the death rays of the other two.

Suddenly one of the two war machines was struck by a beam of energy. Then it was hit again, and again. Then something human shaped struck the damaged area of the war machine, adn flew out the otherside just before it exploded. While the last war machine was distracted Ultraman recovered, and turned it to junk.

He turned to thank his rescuer, and discovered it was a woman. The press gathered around them, and to the surprise of both heroes the whole battle had been filmed. Now superhumans had gone from legends, to reality, to heroes.

  4. My Superhero Universe, Continued

The Great War (1914-1918) had killed off or forced the retirement of a significant portion of the superhuman community. Those who survived were realatively low level superhumans, with perhaps one major power or ability. Germany had been forbidden to have superhumans in it's military, and the Washington Treaty (1921) established limits for all the World's armed forces.

The bulk of World's superhuman strength lay in The League of Heroes. Most were from the United States, but at least one superhuman came from the rest of the major powers. The League, while powerful in theory, was in fact operated on a unanimous vote system. A single "No" vote by any of it's members kept the League from taking action. That was the price paid to have have the League truly international in scope. It also kept the League from entering the conflicts in China, Ethiopia, Spain, or Austria, and thus made another Great War inevitable.

In the year 1938, things finally came to a head. Ultraman was filmed and the existance of superhumans changed from legend to reality. Europe found itself on the brink of another was, and the League of Heroes was there, waiting to see what, if anything, it could do. Then, one night, They came.

Headquarters of The United Superheroes of America, Washington, D.C., 1941

Lady Liberty: What are you wearing?

Maiden America: My new costume. What do you think?

The statuesque redhead looks it over. It's a long sleeve low cut leotard in red, white and blue, with matching boots, gloves, and mask.

    Lady Liberty: It's a little . . . provocative.

Maiden America: You think so? I think it's very practical.

Lady Liberty: In what possible way?

Maiden America: Full freedom of movement.

Lady Liberty: There is that, but won't you be cold?

Maiden America: Didn't you read my character sheet . . . I mean membership profile. I'm immune to temperature extremes.

Lady Liberty: You'd have to be in that outfit. What not wear the old costume? I loved it.

Maiden America: What? That old thing. No one wear's gowns anymore.

The powerfully built brunette looks over at her friend, who is in fact in a gown, and looking somewhat dejectedly at her gold sandals.

    Lady Liberty: You think so.

Maiden America: Oh, LL, I'm sorry. I didn't mean anything. But I'm 45 years old with the body of a 25 year old. If you've got it, flaunt it.

Lady Liberty: Easy for you to say. Everyone has thought you were sexy since the Great War. Why would anyone look at me?

Maiden America: You're a gorgeous six foot tall redhead dressed like the statue of liberty.

Lady Liberty: Well, there is that.

The Alarm goes off, and the two heroines rush off to adventure.

  6. Superhumans have always existed in one form or another.

In Ancient Times they were thought of as Gods. Some made war on other Gods, others married those without powers. The numbers of those with powers increased, but the power levels fell.

For a time they were hated as Demons or Witches. Some became Conquerors, but only a few were truly immortal, and even fewer were invulnerable. Eventually even the mightiest died.

Some came to the New World and hoped to live out there lives in peace. Most did, until the American Revolution. Then everything changed.

King George III, desperate to keep the Thirteen Colonies, hired Hessian Mercenaries and a Black Forrest Sorcerer to raise an Army of the Dammed. The undead soldiers attacked the town of Kingston, New Jersey, and were about to destroy it when the Eagle, a costumed superhuman appeared and defeated it.

Soon other superhumans sided with the Colonists, using there powers to hold the British at bay. They hid there true identities behind masks and costumes to protect their families from Tory Spies. "Fancy Dress Bandits" was how the English referred to them, but they soon made their mark on history, and thus the costumed superhero was born.

General George Washington, on behalf of a grateful, and independent, nation, offered America as a home for superhumans. Soon they came, and as the United States grew so did the number of superhuman citizens. As America travelled West, so did they to settle the frontier. They fought in all of the wars that followed, and on both sides of the Civil War, and helped make America what it is today.

There were those, however, who didn't really believe they existed. After all, they were never very many of them with really great powers around at any one time. A person could easily go their whole life without seeing someone do something superhuman. Most people believe them only to be legends.

    Then it happened.

A runaway dirigible was on a collision course with the Tallest Building in the World, and newsreel camera were there to catch the impending disaster. Then a Superhero arrived to save the day, was caught on film, and everything changed.

Appearance: Valhalla is a tall, beautiful blonde with striking blue eyes. She wears golden "valkyrie" armor and boots, and carries a golden spear.

Background: Valeria Krieger was an immoral fortune hunter who was in Norway during the German invasion. She discovered the ancient Valkyrie armor while trapped in a cave during a bombing raid, and put it on. The armor transformed her, giving her superhuman powers. As Valhalla, she used those powers to capture a British patrol, and offered her services to the Axis. Vahalla was killed by Nighthawk during the Fifth Column's raid on the Philadelphia Navy Yard in May, 1943. What happened to her armor remains classified to this day.

Valerie Kirk was a civilian working for U.S. Navy Intelligence who was in Norway during the German Invasion. She discovered the Valkyrie armor in a cave during an Air Raid, and put it on. The armor gave her superhuman powers, and whlie she was testing them out she was a British Army Patrol about to be ambushed. Thinking quickly, she captured the British soldiers without fatalities (and later managed to help them escape), and offered her services to the Axis as Valeria Krieger. U.S. Navy Intelligence helped establish her cover, and she was source of much valuable information about Axis Supervillains during the war. Her death was faked during the Philadelphia raid, and she retired from the armor rather then ever risk exposing the mission.

Apperance: Maiden America is a tall, shapely woman appearing to be in her late 20s. She has light brown hair and brown yes, and wears a long sleeve red, white and blue leotard with red boots, mask, and gloves, all trimmed in gold.

Dr. Madeline Ames Fremont is an attractive woman in her late 30s, who wears her hair up and wears glasses (not really needed). She uses her disguise skills to make herself look older then she is.

Background: Dr. Madeline Ames Fremont, M.D., was the daughter of famous inventor Dr. Maxwell Ames. During the First World War Dr. Ames invented a super-soldier formula and was about to turn it over to the U.S. government when German agents killed him. Rather then let her father's work fall into his murders' hands, Madeline took all of the formula and destroyed the notes. The German Spies were about to kill her when they were stopped by Marine Captain Matthew Fremont, who had come to pick up the formula.

While Madeline was in the hospital recupterating from the incident, she discovered she now had superstrength and invulnerability, and contacted Captain Matthew Fremont, USMC, and offered her services to the U.S. Government. Captain Fremont turned out to be the superhero Captain Freedom, and the pair fought Central Powers spies on the home front and in France during the war. Madeline's cover in France was as a Nurse, and she learned French there. They both worked directly for the Assistant Secretary of the Navy.

After the war Madeline became a Doctor, and had a daughter named Melissa. Matthew was elected to the U.S. Senate (R, CA) a few years before the start of the Second World War, and Madeline still works for the man who was the Assistant Secretary of the Navy During World War One.

Powers: Maiden America has superhuman strength and invulnerability. She can run at 70 mph, and is impervious to heat and cold. She also ages at a much slower rate them normal humans. She is a skilled physician, and has a keen mind, and is a well trained fighter.

  10. Re: Batman

I was originally thinking about having the Batmobile have flight and swimming, with a time delay to active the other movement type (to simulate Batman calling the Batplane or Batboat by remote), but it took up too much points.

  11. Re: Superman

My goal of creating 350 point characters is just to provide them for those who play lower level campaigns, and for the challenge of doing so. Use them as you will.

  12. Re: Batman

    This was a tough one.

I gave Batman NCM because he's a human who worked to the height of physical perfection.

His skills are those of a detective, escape artist, and dedicated fighter.

The Batmobile is based on the super-car in the 5th edition champions, and is strictly for transportation.

The Analyze: Vulnerabilities skill and the wide variety of attacks the utility belt provides simulates Batman's ability to find a way to take down an opponant no matter what. The Variable Special Effect EB should be especially helpful in that regard.

Hope you enjoy the write up.
