  1. Re: Dummies Guide to Rule of X for 6th Ed Rule of X Defense: So that Bricks pay for there high defenses by deficiencies in three areas; Speed, (defensive) CV and other DCV bonuses. Balanced characters pay for their speed and their ability to dodge attacks with points of defense. DC in Actual Points (75) minus SPD times 3, CV times 2 and non-melee DCV CSL's times 1 equals Average Defense (AD, PD + ED/2). -1/2 AD per 5 points Damage Reduction or Regeneration. +/- 1 AD per -/+ 1 DCV penalty/bonus due to Size Change Powers. -2 AD at 20+ points ALL of the following powers: Missile Deflection, Invisibility, Images, Mental Illusions, Desolidification and Sense Affecting Powers. Maximum AD is 1/2 of DC AP, 30 at 60 DC AP, and is the definition of brick. I'd show my work, how I derived these values from the Hero System, especially page S22, "PLAYING THE NUMBERS" from CHAMPIONS 4th edition, but time and space forbid.
  2. Re: Someone called it mutagenic. I'd call it technology so advanced, it's like magic! Variable Effect (all characteristics) +1/2 sounds great for an unreal amount of flexibility; does all characteristics include INT, EGO, PRE? Running, Swimming and Leaping? Expanded Effect (3 simultaneously) +1 is great also; three times the effect for less than double the cost when you 'stack' this modifier/advantage with another, another excellent purchase! What I'd balk at (besides increasing this power further for real 'who do we need now?' effects) is this whole 'potions and syringes as OAF' thing. Just cause it's in some book doesn't make it unbroken, IMO! Does he go into combat waving a syringe around? just how obvious and accessible are they, and how many are there? 6? for one phase each? shall I assume universal focus, requiring only some basic knowledge to use this item? +1 might be too big a savings for something that can be pulled out various pockets up to 6 times, or is this 1 syringe? Adding limited charges mitigates the savings, your no longer getting 1/2 off for the Focus, but it still saves you a lot, and it potentially adds utility to the power, while more often than not limiting the power one bit! 'nuff said; I will accept no 'no-prize' answer that explains that potions/syringes as OAF; anyone care to disagree?
  3. Re: Cover the Eyes/Ears Maneuver ?? Grabbing the Eyes/Ears would make a lousy name for this opt. maneuver.
  4. Re: Opposed Presence Attacks Super-'Impressive'-Man directly negates PRE attacks with his 'scary' actions? Presence Attack as Presence Defense, Usable on Others, free whenever you want to use it? Is this for 5th or 6th edition? Supe's presence, actions and relevant skills might just might be a -1d6 or -2d6, if that, not HIS PRE/5 x 1d6. I'd be more inclined to automatically give them their Skill and Reputation effects (-1d6 or -2d6 or more) because figuring out PRE attacks are complicated enough; your applying different amounts of damage(dice) from a single 'attack'. start with those least effected, then add a variable amount to those more so (which just may be Supes himself!) why? to better reflect high or low PRE attacks that generally effect others equally. i.e. you keep rolling low and you'll impress no one. you keep rolling high, and they'll all be impressed! or you roll each separately, because the 'attack' effects each separately; oddly enough, that's logical too! Super-man's mere presence does not make me braver or less hesitant; oddly enough, it can have the opposite effect!
  5. Re: Opposed Presence Attacks sounds like a quick and easy way to give 'a group' the highest PRE, rather than to determine each 'presence of mind' based on circumstances..
  6. Re: Cover the Eyes/Ears Maneuver ?? :joint: Grabbing the Eyes/Ears would make a lousy name for this opt. maneuver.
  7. Re: Cover the Eyes/Ears Maneuver Sidekick lists under MARTIAL MANEUVERS: Choke Hold: 1/2 phase -2 OCV +0 DCV EFFECTS: Grab, 2d6 NND (see text): This maneuver allows the character to Grab an opponent's head and neck and inflict NND damage (HE CAN ALSO KEEP THE VICTIM FROM SPEAKING). The defenses against this NND is having rigid armor on the neck, a PD Force Field or LS (Self-Contained Breathing). Costs are in a sidebar under Skills, obviously enough, and Choke Hold is listed first once again. Cost 4. Will this maneuver require special training? I hope not; my suggestion would be to base it more on Grab, which is an everyman maneuver. But then you'll want to retain Choke Hold. Why? That tri-colon of intolerance, SPEAK NO EVIL, HEAR NO EVIL, SEE NO EVIL!
  8. Re: Cover the Eyes/Ears Maneuver What does YMMV mean? also, IIRC? Anyhow, grappling actually involves much 'getting behind/on top of' the other; Surprise is very helpful for this. Most maneuvers aren't limited to relative positions, they just take standard modifiers for rear attack, surprise, having moved, etc. are these 'rear' attacks i.e. majorly penalized if used as a 'frontal attack'? that is, an additional rear attack bonus? that portion of the grab? uh, what else are you grabbing?
  9. Re: A tale of two tails/bases part 6 Ergo, it might not be a 'limitation' because it fails to sufficiently limit the power. Ex. your building (with life support), is shot into space! How? rockets were attached to it or it was magnetically levitated. In these cases, the grounds surrounding your base were unaffected. Next week, Graviton throws the whole grounds into orbit, along with many kilotons of soil. Your Life Support covers the 'generally effected area', the grounds are less relevant areas, IMO 'not worth points'.
  10. Re: A tale of two tails/bases part 6 Why would his Strength and Dexterity be limited, because he can't use it with his tails? He still has his Strength and dexterity, he just can't use it with his tails! err, with bases, yes partial limitations are allowed. just 'limit' what is actually being limited. In the case of partial life support/defenses for bases, do bear in mind 'some open areas' doesn't really 'take away' the defenses, they just apply to possibly more relevant areas.
  11. Re: Cover the Eyes/Ears Maneuver yes, I certainly read the description wrong! It must be me reading and my mind "filling in" the rest! My misconception began with the title, was 'confirmed' in the first line and 'totally ignored' the first 2/3rds of the second line! IMO, it's very hard to completely block the senses, especially to 'clasp' the eyes and ears at the same time with one's hands/arms/wrangling body parts. Perhaps a minor or major penalty to perception rolls, in addition to blocking special effect attacks? But then why do this 'everyman' maneuver, if all it is is a perception roll modifier? why, to block special effect attacks, of course! I like the simple mechanics, but to put it another way, 'one's head' would have a higher DCV, 'one's eyes' would have an even higher DCV. much seems contingent on a grab. it is unlike a choke; the neck doesn't dodge and weave as much as the head.
  12. Re: combat luck when grabbed Thanks for the save, Secret I.D.! an aside it definitely was! Thoughts? you nearly got me on that one, but then my 'magical armor' protected me! How? well, pretty dependably, as always. How? almost magically! How? of whatever 'fuel' causes this continuous fire, luckily not as much did strike me or my costume to begin with. This lesser fuel causes lesser damage, though it burns for just as long, that I readily admit. Please don't disallow my 'magical' protection because I want it to 'magically' always apply!
  13. Re: combat luck when grabbed By 'general rule' I didn't mean 'by the rules, including exceptions' By 'general rule' I mean it how it generally works/applies; by 'exception' I mean when it doesn't apply. 'no exceptions to the general rules need to exist' is actually saying it should always work/apply, without exception. and is actually a purposefully "over-reaching" statement.
  14. Re: Variant types of damage? EGO is more than willpower, and don't we know INT is not knowledge? Yeah, that Fantasy Hero can't merely suggest one stat to base a magic system on? Actually, a full magic system would be 'based on' all three characteristics, and more! Isn't INT more speed and accuracy of thought than knowledge? in either case, it is important to spell-casting, traditionally and for skills. EGO speaks of willpower, and other powers of the mind; some spells require intense concentration, do they not? PRE Defense is of prime importance when talking to demons. How do they suggest you 'base it' on any one? pick one, and base your 'Arcane Defense' on that? I'm rollin' as I pick between INT, EGO and PRE! Thanks for defining what 'Arcane Defense' is; no wonder you call it nebulous!
  15. Re: combat luck when grabbed an end to amnesty, however cruel, will remove the banner presently 'above' this forum, restoring functionality to this site for me and others.
  16. Re: combat luck when grabbed no exceptions to the general rules need to exist, so sayeth the computer in my mind. Combat Luck is a mechanic to ostensibly give resistant defenses to 'lucky' characters, and make 'em tougher to boot, whereas it is cumulative with 'normal' defenses. That's why I'd apply it in nearly every case! Damage against immobilised targets (are you completely immobilized?) Area of Effect damage (gee, your completely surrounded by fire but aren't getting burned!) Squeezing or crushing damage (are you completely immobilized?) Environmental damage, see AoE above. and, let me add, Surprised/unaware (somehow, you move at the last second, partially dodging the attack); Only where it is ostensibly negated would I not apply it. Also when I need less KA dice to 'injure' the character and not K.O. 'im.
  17. Re: Cover the Eyes/Ears Maneuver I like the idea that it's possible, but how easy should it be, to blind, deafen or blind and deafen another character in this manner, even temporarily? I like the classic, standard -2 penalties, but have you also considered another attack roll, where the first is for the regular grab and the second would be covering the eyes/other effect? IMO, clasping ears should be either/or that or clasping the eyes, not both necessarily, but depending on what's doing the covering. I'd also like to see the special effect of 'screaming into the ears'. work that in and I'll be amazed that you've thought of everything, while I'm wondering if your joking or not!
  18. Re: Omcv 1? sense of self-awareness? and why isn't this perception roll required before attempting a maneuver?
  19. Re: House Rule: Social Combat Well, to begin with, after your extended metaphor/introduction for 'the mental equivalent of BODY and STUN', MIND and COOL, we are given very little actual mechanics, just vague descriptions of a combat system, one that will covert Skill Rolls into PSL's "if it has to".

  21. Re: Omcv 1? where it's relevant, sure I'd 'allow' it, I'd just restrict it so it isn't "give me extra points, please". One major restriction would be that one has to also sell back DMCV also, leaving the character with an 'actual' vulnerability. Then I would not let the character buy Mental Defense, especially defined as 'too stupid to be effected by mental powers'.
  22. Re: Omcv 1? With a black pen or marker, just carefully write MINT and MEGO over OMCV and DMCV, as the new, decoupled stats, Mental Intelligence and Mental Ego. Why? Because Mental Powers should 'hit' automatically, requiring only that you can 'perceive' your target. No longer would their be some 'magical evasion ability' that allows everyone to 'dodge' mental attacks; their effects can only be mitigated by mental defenses. MINT would be used to target and 'evade' mental perception, LOS requiring only a regular perception roll. MEGO would be used for mental defense, just like EGO but only for mental defense. Rather than change the cost structure for Mental Powers, just require that a 15 or 20 pt. Adder be added to Mental Powers, 'hits automatically with perception roll'.

No longer would their be some 'magical evasion ability' that allows everyone to 'dodge' mental attacks; their effects can only be mitigated by mental defenses. MINT would be used to target and 'evade' mental perception, LOS requiring only a regular perception roll. MEGO would be used for mental defense, just like EGO but possibly a separate value. Rather than change the cost structure for Mental Powers, just require that a 15 or 20 pt. Adder be added to Mental Powers, 'hits automatically with perception roll'.
