Description:

Slaughter Smith is a tall, well-built man who wears his hair in a buzz cut. His boxing trunks are black with a white skull & crossbones on the left hip. In civilian life, he wears tailor-made black suits.

BACKGROUND

To be honest, there isn't anything about Slaughter Smith's past in the story. He simply shows up having already boxed enough to get a shot at the heavyweight world boxing champion. We don't even know his real name, though it's indicated that "Slaughter Smith" is an alias.

So, a quick rundown of the story itself. Slaughter Smith is a professional boxer, good enough to get a shot at the champ, and to knock that champion flat with a single punch. When Smith refuses any interviews, Billy Batson trails the boxer to his secret lair, where it is revealed that Smith is also a mad scientist. It appears Smith's entire boxing career was simply a way of raising money to pay Professor Universe for the results of that worthy's summary of all human knowledge.

Smith has developed a device to translate information printed on paper and implant it directly into the mind of a gorilla, the oddly named Dr. Allirog. With the aid of his newly uplifted simian servant, Smith plans to slaughter the entire federal government, from the President to the lowliest page boy, and install himself as absolute ruler of America.

Discarding his lesser henchmen in the same giant tarantula room as Billy, Smith hurries off to the nation's capital. Billy turns into Captain Marvel and arrives just in time to prevent the duo from committing any actual murders. Dr. Allirog falls to its death from the Washington Monument, and Slaughter Smith is sent to prison, never to return.

PERSONALITY

Slaughter Smith is a megalomaniac who is perfectly willing to kill hundreds of people with his bare hands (and a killer gorilla) to achieve his ends. He's capable of being quite patient while his preparations are made, but once in action, he does not hesitate. Smith is callous, and perfectly willing to sacrifice his henchmen when they're no longer immediately useful.

Smith's ambition was to rule America with only his gorilla to moderate his behavior.

QUOTE

"Watch-closely-for-when-I-have-finished-I-will-kill-you." Slaughter Smith speaks in a distinctive and creepy monotone.

POWERS/TACTICS

Slaughter Smith is a trained boxer of superhuman strength, easily able to lift the back end of an automobile without a jack or smash through two inches of solid oak door. In addition, he is a brilliant mad scientist, and has the ability to control animals with the force of his will.

For a mad scientist, Smith is surprisingly unsubtle with his tactics, preferring to go straight for the uppercut. Once he gains Dr. Allirog's assistance, Smith spends most of his time ordering the ape around.

CAMPAIGN USE

Slaughter Smith was created by Bill Parker and C.C. Beck for Special Edition Comics #1.

To be honest, as written, Slaughter Smith is simply a collection of traits that make him a dangerous opponent, but has no depth. To use him in a campaign, a GM would need to work up a bit more background and motivation for Smith so that a direction can be found that he should go in. To make him more powerful, give Smith some more mad science gadgets to supplement his fighting skills and strength. If he needs to be weaker, remove his combat levels. Smith might or might not Hunt, depending on how he's played.

Important people for Slaughter Smith:

Butch: Smith's second in the ring and general dogsbody. Use the Thug template and add some boxing manager skills. Butch is a typical petty tough who knows he's on to a good thing with his current boss--until he gets double-crossed, of course.

Spider: Smith's lab assistant. Hunchbacked and facially deformed, Spider is a bit of a coward. Spider should average out to Normal, using his Distinctive Features and Physical Limitation to pay for science-related skills.

Giant Tarantula: An early experiment Smith keeps in the torture chamber. Use the Hero Bestiary write-up for a sufficiently large spider.

Dr. Allirog: A gorilla Slaughter Smith gives "all human knowledge" with a machine. Use the Gorilla writeup from the Hero Bestiary, but add 20 INT, KS: Everything 18-, and Psych Lim: Completely loyal to Slaughter Smith. Notably, Smith did not give Dr. Allirog the ability to speak.

Professor Universe: "Sinister Master of All Knowledge." Knows all, will sell you a book with his accumulated knowledge for the bargain price of $200,000.
