These "radar camouflage" experiments were the roots of modern "stealth" technology. Various materials were evaluated for their ability to either absorb or scatter radar refection. A reflection dimming rubberized coating known as "Tarnmatte" was developed and used on U-Boats. Tests to conceal S-boats to enemy radar using measures such as "Tarnmatte" were partially successful at certain wavelengths, but apparently did not develop to operational use. 0

Re: Shadowcats Vehicular Insanity Shop: S100 E Boat

Some research group in Britain with time on their hands in 1940 figured that they could make a great fast gunboat with a larger power plant that stil generated the kind of power-to-weight ratios seen in high-speed diesels and gas engines. So they came up with a lightweight steam power plant, crammed it into a hull, and created one of the more powerful (and quiet) gun/torpedo boats on the Channel in World War II. They didn't see much action, however, on account of it being almost impossible to miss a steam pipe when shooting at them, a fact that dawned after only 6 were built. I'm sure there's a writeup somewhere ..ah, 'ere we go. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steam_Gun_Boat
