Christopher
I read a few (dozen) webcomics. Among them some superheroic ones and one truly supervillainy one, Dark Wick. http://www.darkwick.com In this world young Emmet Wick is suddenly confronted that his father is the famous Dr. W (in prison) and he is has the option to become the new Wick of the generation, but first he has to rescue his father. He manages to pull that off more to luck then skill, and with the help of his friend Vicky. Vicky has disfigured hands and as thank for her help in his rescue (and helping training his son), Dr. W offers her to correct the issue and with it remove the reminders of the traumatic event from her life. During the drive they talk about her joining his organsiation too, and he points out that she should not undergo the surgery if she really wants to join: http://www.darkwick.com/index.php?comicid=368 http://www.darkwick.com/index.php?comicid=369 http://www.darkwick.com/index.php?comicid=370 "Our lifestyle forces us to push our morals to the limit. Therefore it is highly important we keep our memories and pains to allowing us to embrace our hatred towards the world in order to continue with our goals. Withot it the guilt may well destroy you." Comic Spoiler: The world makes the decision for Vicky, as she get's disfigured even worse during the operation. While they propably have the technolgy to build her an new body + brain transfer, this will either be to expensive (she needs to go SV to finance it) or this event pushes her over the edge. It does not quite apply to every supervillain. Thieves like Grab or Catwomen and even Foxbat are not breaking any morals with thier antics, so they do not need it that badly. They only have slightly shifted morals. But in turn the joker is reminded every day of his disfigurement when he puts on his makeup.* Dr. Doom is disfigured (and wants to save his mothers soul from hell, wich he blames on the world). Viper recruits his Mooks and Villains from the Criminals and downtrodden of the world. Nod in the C&C universe does the same, mixed in with religious aspects. Vampires are reminded of thier "beastial" side every time they have to dink blood, wich is also why Blade avoids having too. For some it can be a total over-reaction. Some interpretations of doom had him only having a minor scar, wich his perfectionist side blew out of proportion. *Interesting aspect: In one "mirror DC world" the Joker was a hero as every other villain, but he still used his old "the Red hood" disguise so he was not permanently reminded of his disfigurement. steriaca
One needs not be physically damaged to be a villain. It does help, thoe (anyone remember the original Hideous?). Their is also thoes with strong mental scares.
steriaca
Oh, I forgot to list those with strong mental scars. Black Harlequin. Nuff said.
