Michael Hopcroft
Japanese animator Isao Takahata has died at the age of 81. One of the co-founders, with Hayao Miyazaki, of the legendary animation studio Studio Gibhli, Takahata's best-known work as a director is the World War II tragedy Grave of the Fireflies. He also served as producer on some of Miyazaki's greatest films, and did more recent directing work including My Neighbors the Yamadas and The Tale of Princess Kaguya. As a director, his colleague may have eclipsed him in the public eye, but Takahata was a brilliant man in his own right, and he had a vital role in the creation of several masterpieces of the art of animation.
