  1. Re: Hunted: Watched

And realize that for the short term, a Watched can become a Hunted.

You do something the Watched disagrees with, and they'll shoot you. For the rest of the story arc, the Watched is the Hunted, and no points for you.

Remember, you can incur new disadvantages over the course of the game without getting points for them. If you piss of your Watched, that's your problem. You just got half as many points for a Hunted.

  2. Re: PULP HERO -- What Do *You* Want To See?

    Steve-O:

I'm sure you've written up 1 & 2 already, but they're related to #3, and #3 is important to me.

    1) A detailed analysis of supporting characters in the Pulp HERO genre. (Duh)

    2) A detailed analysis of playing supporting characters. (Should be a big duh)

    3) A detailed analysis of GMing for supporting characters.

Now, I find this to be difficult. In Champions campaigns, it's hard to run adventures that are equally interesting to players built with 50 points less. In the Pulp Genre, those characters are even MORE common, and some commentary on running adventures catered towards supporting sidekicks.

    Thanks!

  3. Re: Designing reasonable aliens

I think I start on a very different end of the spectrum from others when crafting aliens, since I only do SciFi in RPGs, not in my writing.

After I make some pointyheads, I start to think about more complicated aliens via their game mechanics.

Ooh! Extra Limbs! Thus, Spiderlings are born.

Ooh! Flight. Bam, I've got some hoverers

Ooh! Gliding! Thus, gas bags are born.

    Ooh! Stretching! Viners are born.

    Etc, etc.

  4. Re: Advice for new GMs

Generic premade characters! These will save your @$$ so many times it's not even funny.

Not just "Standard Normal" or "Competent Normal." Stat out a "Scientist" or "City Guard" or whatever, and when your characters encounter Dr. Bob the Rocket Surgeon, you'll have a scientist statted out.

  5. Re: The Hero curse

I find myself doing HERO constructs for basic things. Since we've had official writeups for watches, coffee cups and towels, I find myself doing constructs of things around me all the time.

Fan - Change Environment, Cone, OAF Bulky

Book - Cramming, Activation Roll, OAF

Flag - +5 PRE, OAF, Only In Nationalism-Related Activities

  6. Re: Introducing player to the HERO System

Something I've always found to work is to let the characters make there characters freeform - just have them write a two page description of all things related to their characters, from physical to emotional, combat to background history. Then, make the characters for them, and let them learn the game and spend XP however they want.

    It works wonders.

  7. Re: Drawing END for the surroundings

I'd buy REC (either for END or an END Reserve) with the -1/2 (or -1/4, if the GM isn't going to monitor it much) limitation REC Only Up to Local REC Limit.

If you don't have it already, go grab a copy of Fantasy HERO, an excellent resource for dealing with the idea of ambient power sources.

  8. Re: Ranged Poison attack

I don't have 5R with me, so I don't know how much Continuous is worth. I wasn't even aware it was a variable advantage.

IIRC. Continuous is a static advantage that allows you to attack someone without re-rolling an attack. You just spend the END each turn, and they take damage.

IIRC. Uncontrolled lets you pay all that END up front so you can move on to focus other things.

So, using the first Scorpion Sting above, if the power costs 5 END to use, if you attacked, and you hit, you would dump some END in (I don't remember if you dump in before or after the attack roll - guy says before). So, you dump in 20 END into your Sting. BOOM! It hits, and this Phase, and during your subsequent 3 phases, your victim takes 1d6, with their Armor applying to each one independently.

With a 4d6 Delayed Effect, the armor would only apply once-ish.

  9. Re: Ranged Poison attack

Be careful though. I don't remember to what extent Uncontrolled works in regards to how much damage you do. IIRC, Uncontrolled allows you to dump a fistful of END into an attack, so it might be better to go with a really big RKA (5d6 RKA or so) with Delayed Effect instead of Continuous/Uncontrolled.

  10. Re: Encounter Paradigms

I like a video-game paradigm (pronounced pair-ah-DIG-em), just not a simple video game. You look at the classic video games, they follow a very simple formula - normal monsters are manageable, unless you get cocky. Bosses are impossible unless you figure out their "trick" or weakness. Sometimes there are macguffin tricks, which result in characters getting eaten. I love this stuff.

  11. Re: Question about 4th to 5th upgrade...

Why give them more points? It seems that your characters (both good and bad) are able to threaten and save the world just fine with their current point spread. Unless you're planning on doing a lot of crossovers with the Champions Universe, you should be fine. And just give the players (and villains) extra XP (just a point or two) until they catch up, so that new players who join your group are where they need to be.

  12. Re: Package Deal Critiques

A little while back they changed the way the script that tallies posts works so that posts to the Non-Gaming Discussion forum no longer count towards your post total. Their reasoning was that since this is a gaming discussion forum' date=' posts made to the [i']non-gaming[/i] part shouldn't count as part of your post total. Given that a lot of the weight given to a post by the readers of the post is often tied to the poster's post count, a number of people agreed that this was a good move -- so that posts made in the non-gaming forum don't give "undue weight" to the posts a member makes in the gaming forums.

What?! Man, when I announced that I was back, over in NGD, and I asked what I had missed, nobody said nuthin' about no NGD not counting towards posts. Man, am I out of the loop!

  13. Re: The DEATH of the HERO System!!!

Man, I was getting ready to get my HERO-hate on. Because, boy, do I have beef with DoJ. What a bunch of punks. Their books cost money, and that ain't cool. They make more of them than I can afford, and that makes it hard for me to keep it real. And their books aren't soda-spill-proof. I expect answers, WHAT!
