1. Re: Mixing Up Comic Book Ages

Stalin would have been overthrown after his boxing match with Hitler.

The Japanese wouldn't have taken over the Philippines. The Philippines would have become independent from the US after Batman solved his case there, and trained his Filipino equivalent.

Looks like the Philippines Batman doesn't show up until the 50s. The Philippines get Darna in 1947. She has the full Captain Marvel power set and eventually more. Not sure when Captain Barbell shows up (another one with the full Captain Marvel set), and Lastikman doesn't come until something like 1963, but Darna alone should be able to send the Japanese home. http://marsravelodarna.tripod.com/

  2. Re: Mixing Up Comic Book Ages

A real Iron Age world would be one where superheroes prevented WW2. Superman stopped a whole bunch of European wars before Pearl Harbour.

What a lovely world! No Soviet Union. No Israel. The British, French, Dutch, Portuguese, Spanish and American Empires would still rule the world. Egypt would still have a king. Probably so would Iraq, Iran, Ethiopia, Afghanistan, Nepal... No civil rights movement in the US. Australia would still have the White Australia policy. Women would know their place. Homosexuality would be illegal.

Most of the world would still be working on 1930s technology, but we would have well established colonies on the Moon and Mars.

    Heaven on earth. Disagree, and...

    Repped. :)

The American Empire would be limited compared to the Real World . The UK has some Superheroes during the war and many more after, and France has a bunch of Pulp Heroes running around through the War Years. Germany has some great Pulp Heroes that all get purged in 1943. Russia doesn't have much of not unless the mythic / folkloric heroes are hiding from Stalin. The Philipines get a bunch of Superheroes starting in 1949, so they might be able to kick out the Japanese (if oil supply problems hadn't already done so), and the Chinese Super Martial Artists might be able to counter the Japanese occupation eventually (the American Supers probably wouldn't intervene). Oil & food supply issues might force the Japanese to withdrawl to Korea all on their own.

  3. Re: "Normals" gaining superpowers: how would they change in terms of mentality?

    Surgery?

Maybe if you can make other people invisible, and if you can do it layer by layer. Then you could help out in a hospital. For classic "You can't see me" invisibility, the only legal stuff I could see you doing would be hiding from people you didn't want to deal with, or working in law enforcement.

  4. Re: Mixing Up Comic Book Ages

Personally, I don't worry about arbitrary Comic Book Ages when I GM. It can be fun in a meta way; Alan Moore and Kurt Busiek both have a great time playing with / commenting on Comic Book Ages in their Superhero work. Still, meta commentary in a campaign kind of takes me out of it.

I do pay attention to period, which ties into comic book ages but is not quite the same. So, for example, in my WWII game all of the NPC villains (and most of the PC heroes) were based on comic book and pulp characters of the time, then fleshed out to match my ideas of what was interesting, and what contributed to good story telling. I didn't throw in anything that didn't (imo) work given the period, but I also didn't let the limitations of period media get in the way of story telling. Jess Nevin's Pages were the starting point for many of my bad guys and plots.

  5. Re: What Have You Watched Recently?

Watched Thirst last night. It's a Korean vampire movie, directed by Park Chan-wook (Director of the awesome- but sensitive - splatterfest that is the "Vengeance" trilogy). It's the first (and probably only) vampire movie to be loosely based on the writings of french writer Emile Zola :)

Basically, it's about a well-loved priest who via a medical experiment becomes a vampire. He is forced to grapple with his conscience, and his suddenly increased desires of the flesh - for blood of course, but also for his childhood friend's wife ... You can probably guess it doesn't end well. Also? No sparkling.

It's pretty cool, but not as cool as Lady Vengeance.

It was only when we got out that my wife said she was expecting a wacky comedy like Mr Vampire!

    cheers, Mark

I really liked "Thirst". A nice counterpoint to America's sparkly vampires.

Otoh, a "Thirst" - "Vampire Cop Ricky" double feature would be a great evening.

  6. Re: Pink Anime Power-Suit Girl

Hey guys! I'd like to pick your collective brains/Google skills. For a game I'm going to be running soon, I need a picture of an Anime-style girl wearing pink powered armor. Cartoony is preferred over realistic, if possible, but either is acceptable.

    Help a bunneh out? :help:

I'd use Cutie Honey. You can get pics from the live action or the Anime.

  7. Re: In Progress From Blackwyrm Games: Mythic America

I had a thought while driving home that perhaps the heroes are called upon to perform a rescue. Someone has kidnapped Uncle Sam/Lady Liberty... I was thinking perhaps the personification of greed (a robber baron)' date=' intolerance (the KKK) and so on. But I also like a machine spirit who wants to have a full-scale industrial revolution. Or, perhaps, an machine is behind the actions of the robber baron, railroad tycoon, KKK wizard, and they'd done the kidnapping.[/quote']

All sound cool, but I'd prefer an evil machine like The Steam Man or The Turk to a machine spirit. A Machine Spirit is a little too modern in sensibility; stories about thinking robots or haunted machines, iirc, were starting to show up by the early 20th century, early enough for them to pop up as enemies in a late 19th century setting. Evil Indian Shamans and Spirits are period, but possibly too politically incorrect to include. Evil German Hex Doctors, English Occultists, and Central European Vampires are period and work in a more Weird West kind of game, but not as well in a Mythic America setting.

I think one tricky thing about running a campaign will be walking the line between more or less authentic Tall Tales, with the heroes having mythic adventures inventing industries and taming the West, vs period fake-lore Superhero/Weird West adventures. I know my tastes lean more towards the Period Supers uses of this book, but the source material points more to the Mythic flavor. There should also be notes on using this with early (HG Wells / Jules Verne) Sci Fi and Fantastic Victoriana.

  8. Re: Musings on Random Musings

    What reactor?

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100821/ap_on_re_mi_ea/iran_nuclear

Iran has started their nuclear reactor. Expect the nukes to go into production ASAP, if they don't already have a few. Only real question is if they're taking the saner path of "We have nukes, now the US can't invade us" or the bugnuts path of "We have nukes, now we can market them".

I doubt they'll take the bugnuts path, but even a small chance is pretty worrying.

  9. Re: A Thread for Random Musings

It's strange how your sense of beauty changes. Good or bad feelings have obvious effects (someone you really love always seems more beautiful, sometimes significantly). But even something as simple as being in a room full of beautiful people vs a room full of not beautiful people makes a difference.

  10. Re: Foods for those that just don't care anymore

I like burgers' date=' and I like doughnuts, but I'm sad to say, that does not look appetizing to me ... still, if you like it, enjoy. :)[/quote']

It was quite good. Also worth noting that it was 562 calories w/ 47 grams of protein. That's a better calories to protein ratio than the Big Mac, Whopper, or pretty much any comparable fast food burger. Could have made it much more healthful, but wanted the indulgence value. :)

  12. Re: I am Spartacus

Old thread, but I'll pipe in and say I watched the series on Netflix streaming. Not deep, lots of stuff to annoy history and martial arts geeks (I'm both), but in the end I liked it enough to watch it through to the last episode, and if they do a season two or mini series I'll tune in for that as well.

  13. Re: Foods for those that just don't care anymore

Here's something I made the other night.

Sauerkraut, Sausage, Beef and Apple served in sourdough

    That looks delicious! :)

We're having Doughnut Burgers on Wednesday. All very high quality ingredients, the best I can find, put together into the form of the famous Doughnut Burger. Should be fun. :)

  14. Re: In Progress From Blackwyrm Games: Mythic America

Hmm... might be too close to Tom Strong... then again... so's Wonder-Man.

Alan Moore drew on old out of copyright comic book characters to create Tom Strong and the ABC line. As I understand it, so long as it's the original characters and not his revamps you use, it's not in violation of copy right law for you to do the same. You might want to ask Ken about it, as he probably had to worry about these issues just recently.
