  1. Re: Adult themes in gaming, a rant of sorts

I am lucky in that most of the games I run have more female than male players. As a result there isn't the all women are saints or whores mentality that can be found in some gaming groups. Adult themes are left to the discretion of the players. I have had female players run characters who had been victims of incest (fantasy hero game), escaped sex slaves (fantasy hero) and married couples (supers). I have never run a game or played in one where anyone was raped. Even if the player had suggested that it could happen I would probably not include a rape scene. I just am not comfortable with running something like that.

In many of my games the players have had thier characters develop sexual relationships with each other. In the vast majority of the cases these result in marriage between the two characters. Maybe this is because most of my players are married females or have been in the same relationship for 8+ years.

So, I do think that if you have a clear understanding with your players and it suits the campaign adult themes have a place (with the exception of rape which I have a bias against).

  2. Re: Do you give out Bases, Group Vehicles, Group Equip etc

In the last four supers games that I ran I gave a base and vehicles to the team. I did this because I started the characters out at 250pts instead of 350pts and didn't want the players to worry about spending points on a base.

I designed the base and vehicles and found this worked out great for me as the players had no idea that the Nazis had built a secret base under the the building that Freedom Force had it's base in. I also ran a game for my 1950 Avengers where the Skrull had planted technology in Avengers Mansion and triggered it just before thier invasion fleet showed up. Since the players didn't need to spend points on the base I felt it was easier to run these plots without having to argue about how the players had designed the base.

  3. Re: Other Ways Of Using Luck

I have run luck two different ways.

First is to count each die of luck as one luck point. The character can use this luck point to re roll the dice if they blow a roll, or to help them find a clue, take the right turn, fall on soft ground, etc.

Second way is to have the player roll his luck dice and add up all the 6's. Each 6 will assure them some level of success in what they are attempting to accomplish. The more 6's the more good stuff happens.

  4. Re: Lets cut the crap...

Ok. If other people are going to grade systems, I'll grade some I haven't seen listed

Fantasy Trip: A+ : It got me into RPG's.

Same for me. In fact the last FH game that I ran was located in the Duchy of Dran.

I would rate Hero 5th at a good solid B. It gets done what I want it to for fantasy, supers, and horror.

The only other system that I have played in the last 8 years is Call of Cthulhu and the larp version of Vampire. I would rate CoC at an A for simulating cthuloid horror and Vampire at a D+ for larp.

    Cheers,

  5. Re: Entangle Abuse

I don't know about that. In HERO there is more than one way to skin a cat. One of the common adders in games I played in once upon a time was the Body adder to Force Wall. In 5er Entangle got a creates barriers effect added in to reflect how people were using the power in games. Both powers work to create 'walls' now and could be used as defensive powers. Heck use Entangle on your own FW to harden it up a bit. :D

    Hawksmoor

I agree there are many ways to skin a cat in HERO, however in my opinion this is a case of trying to create a power for one that already exists. If you want extra def then buy armor, force field, force wall or damage reduction. YMMV

  6. Re: Entangle Abuse

It may be legal but I wouldn't allow this type of use on a regular basis. If he is using an entangle as primarily a defensive power, in my opinion, he should buy a force wall instead.

  7. Re: Hero System women are all insanely attractive

Well, as a female gamer I have to say, I like my characters to have a high COM (at least 14). I'm no Hollywood star, but it sure is a nice fantasy to play one in a game. So it doesn't bother me in the least :)

    Theala

Wow! Theala Sildorian! Been years since I heard from you. Still have your webpage up?

  8. Oh, you must include my favorite cryptozoological critter the Mongolian Death Worm. You can find out more about it here.

    http://www.occultopedia.com/d/death_worm.htm

This two foot long nasty either spits poison or releases an electrical charge to kill people at range. It's habitat is the southern Gobi Desert. The locals fear this creature and consider it bad luck to even talk about it.

Please add the Mongolian Death Worm to the Asian Bestiary.

And while were at it there should be more cryptozoological critters in the bestariy, bigfoot, Nessie, Caddie, the Beast of Bray Road (Wisconsin Werewolf), the lizard man of South Carolina, Mothman, the skunk ape, etc.

Maybe there could be a cryptozoological besitary for Pulp Hero when that comes out?

Fantasy Hero Companion I had mass land combat rules and II had the ship combat rule.

What I really liked about the Companions were the location maps. I still use the map for the Eagle for my roadside inns. It also included a small castle, a wizards tower, a manor house, city tavern, samll keep, a guild hall, a monastery, a cave complex and a few others that escape me at present. I hope that the fantasy hero battlegrounds supplement will have more maps like the ones above.

  10. Has anyone run a FH game based in H.P. Lovecraft's Dreamlands?

It seems to me to be a perfect setting for a Crossworlds Fantasy game. Characters could either be citizens of the Dreamlands, dreamers, or from this world using one of the portals to crossover.

Lots of exoctic locations and creatures, and plenty of space to develop new locations. Heck you could even travel to the moon or saturn.

    So, anyone ever run this?
