  1. Re: My first Characters for Champion

    :Sigh:

Although some, a very small minority of HERO Players, interpret Body to be linked to size, in most cases it (Body) has zip, zilch, zero to do with body mass at all when it concerns a Character.

It *does* have everything to do with the concept of "Hard to Kill". If your character (PC or NPC) is tough to kill *after you figure out his defenses* then you have a case for increased BODY. Body, like all characteristics is based on a range, with most people agreeing that 20 is the NCM. Thus you can have lots and lots of BODY, especially if it is a superpower.

OTOH STUN is the Characteristic most like HPs in other games and if you want a character that can take a beating and not fall down, buy more STUN.

Gigagirl is just off, IMO. Listen to what the others are telling you. She needs more DEFENSES and more Skills. She seems to get by on talent (DEX), which is fine as per conception. You also seem to have a bit of CoH lag intruding into the game. Build a comic book character not a comic fighting game character, it'll be more interesting.

  2. Re: DC Universe Overview

Like you said bad writing. The Source Wall IIRC is hard to get to. Most of the time trying to get to the Source just gets you lodged in the Source Wall for your Hubris. You need the potency of X-Element to get there. Now here is an idea. Darkseid is supercharged by X-Element which he absorbs directly into his body. Superman is shown to have cracked the skin of Darkseid in the comic. Since the Batman/Superman Kal-El is shown to just as potent as the JLA Superman maybe he absorbed the X-Element and with his Super-

"I Win"ism powers opened a Boom Tube with the X-Element that was absorbed into his Kryptonian physique.

The fact that the writers did not mention this as an explaination is as you say, Bad writing.

Love the commentary Chuck. You were one of the people I missed during my haitus.

  3. Re: DC Universe Overview

Well' date=' yes -- but how did Superman open it? He didn't have a Mother Box, and God knows Darkseid doesn't carry one for him to rip off, him having the power to ope those things on his ownsome.[/quote']

Lesse..people Kal El knows well enough to lend, off panel, a Mother Box to Superman because he *knows* Darkseid is just itching to repay him for the Supergirl/Batman debacle. (which say what you might the BAtman Darksied fight was tres cool! and exactly what I imagine the Bat doing to 'defeat' Darkseid)

    Mr. Miracle

    Orion

    Tachyon

    Big Barda

Metron (OK maybe not that one)

Or just about any New God.

Hey, with the Upgrades Barda and Orion did to the Watchtower pre-Nasty Thing from beyond time and space -Mageddon. The Watchtower might even have a Boom Tube Summoning Device. Remember the MB's don't actually create Boom Tubes they just dial one up from Either Darksied's or Supertown's big ole Kirby Machine.

So, I do indeed think that a Boom Tube was opened.

  4. Re: Mjolnir

Correct. Much like the majority of fights that Superman has had with Martians, or more correctly the one remaining Green Martian, or as Kal likes to put it the "Single most powerful being on the face of the Earth!"

Wow, this so had nothing to do with Supes until I posted his name...one post, that's how long it took, one post.

    I win.

Well you did bring it up. So monkey man enjoy your spoils. :P

  6. Re: Mjolnir

Note, Captain Marvel beat Superman only when he specifically charged his fist with magic lightning beforehand. (Even then it took two punches, not one, and surprise shots to the back of Supes' head besides... although CM was only trying to KO him, not kill him, so the first shot was definitely pulled.)

When CM just punches Superman in the normal way, it's only a normal superstrong punch to Big Blue's defenses. It has to be a deliberately magic-charged attack to down him.

    Just like...

    * Thor swings Mjolnir

Superman goes "ow! damn! that hurt!"

    * Thor charges up Mjolnir, to where mystic energies and the magic lightning is crackling around the head... and then swings it.

Superman goes "AGH! Oh, my shattered bones! Oh my bleeding internal organs!"

Right two blows, never argued otherwise. I like that comic. I disagree that the blows were pulled. Billy knew he had to get Superman out of commision quick. This is the reason that The Big Red Cheese is *the* Anti Superman weapon in the JLA's arsenal. Think way back to the Eclipso event of 1990ish. Who did they send against an Eclisped Kal El? Captain Marvel.

Really, Superman's vulnerability to magic is highly variable. To me, it is any attack/effect with a magic origin. Thus Superman cannot break down a door with his Superstrength that has been enchanted with a Hold Portal type spell. The could Heat Vision it out of existence, but he could not rip it from it's hinges. Same thing applies to Magic bricks punching him. It does not kill Superman, he has too much stun and Body, but his DR and Enhanced PD are way, way down.

But anyway Mjolnir is the Mightiest Weapon in the Marvel Universe!

  7. Re: Mjolnir

Lest not forget that Thor is magic. Not weilds magic Thor *is* Magic! Thus like Captain Marvel Thor can beat Superman. It might no not be easy, Superman still has all that Stun and Body, but his Defenses are lower to Thor's blows whether or not he uses the hammer to deliver them.

But I digress, yes Mjolnir increases the damage Thor delivers in combat...significantly.

  8. Re: CHAR: Green Lantern

    So far so good.

This is how I would go about the Ring. Make it a VPP (a rather enormous one) and specify that the Character can only access EGOx4 or so for effects. That means that Hal or any other GL with their enormous EGOs can pull out 90+AP out of the ring and lesser willed characters obviously get by with less. This also works for the various will sapping (Drain effects) we see in comics. FOREX: the Ultramarines KO'd Kyle by subjecting him to ultrasonics that prevented his concentration.

Also the Ring is only as Durable as the users will. IIRC if the ring is on a finger it is almost indestructable...which is way more than Durable. Also the Foci does not lose powers. To me this means either Indestructable (some things can harm it such as attacks when not worn) or OIHID representing a Ring-like "thing" that really can't be attacked and certainly doesn't loose powers when 'damaged'.

  9. Re: CHAR: Superman

The "err science guy" is Professor Emil Hamilton.

Superman should also have contacts with the Supermen of America (Teen Heroes based in Metropolis); The Superman Family (Supergirl, Steel, Superboy); and of course lots and lots of 2 to 3 points of languages from his decade of secret training as he traveled the world anonymously doing good deeds before the Spaceplane incident recorded by Lois Lane.

  10. Re: Power Help: Big Stone Mech

I feel that game balance is a necessity to maintain the integity of the game system. YMMV.

And I say "Sauce for the Goose!" as long as everyone is treated equally such nonsense rulings are unnecessary.

  11. Re: CHAR: Green Lantern

Alan no longer wears a ring and I plan on getting to him. :D

    Update:

Alan Scott no longer calls him self Sentinel, he is back to Green Lantern. He is still a being of Green Mystic Energy (Starheart) held together by a force of will second only to that of Hal Jordan (who actually kept the force of the Spectre from his assigned task of Vengance for a while, until Hell actually opened up and spat out the sinners as a reminder of the Spectre's mission but I digress)

Green Lantern (Alan Scott) wears his ring (reforged Starheart) and is the JSA's answer to Superman as the Greatest Hero of his Generation!

    Hawksmoor

PS: I vote Kyle or John Stewart..I disliked Hal for being too vanilla in his appearances. And if ya wanna really please me Guy Gardner --the one true Green Lantern!

  12. Re: Power Help: Big Stone Mech

It's a game balance issue. Stick Growth' date=' Density, and HKA or HA in the same EC and you'd get an awful attack for dirt cheap.[/quote']

    So?

That is where the rule that says "Use Common Sense!" kicks in.

Seriously, point issues aside there is no reason, at all, for the STR (or Attack Powers) to NOT stack regardless of how they were built.

Steve is wrong, it might make point buy sense but that has nothing to do with consistency and integration of the game system.

    Hawksmoor

  13. Re: Power Help: Big Stone Mech

Oddhat, while your build is technically legal, it's not going to be particularly effective. Steve has made a ruling that Str from growth and density don't stack together when inside frameworks.

    http://herogames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9963&highlight=growth+density

And this is one of the many reasons that sometimes Steve is W-R-O-N-G. That ruling makes absolutely no sense. STR from DI and Growth should stack period Framework or no.

  14. Re: CHAR: Wonder Woman

Black Canary was in a committed relationship with Green Arrow for decades' date=' and Diana was with Steve. If the new continuity has neutered them, that's one more reason to ignore it.[/quote']

    Yeah...I meant by Roy :P

Although I must mention Oracle/Batgirl I and Donna Troy. So far as I can tell Roy never implied getting on with them either.

Some of the writting in Outsiders is just too cool. Especially the Arsenal v. Nightwing beatdown that ended with Jade being put in charge since neither of the 'boys' was up to the job.

  15. Re: CHAR: Wonder Woman

Diana's just traditional. Long term relationship or nothing with her. Zatanna, well, she's fond of the quick hook-up. All depends on what you're willing to offer.

You need a lot of charm and confidence to make a relationship work with a JLAer. Or, a Hypno-Ray. Whichever.

    Hmmm

Heroines Roy Harper has hooked up with:

    Fire

    Huntress

    Grace (Choi)

    Zatanna

Or in his words "You mean extremely attractive women with the bodies of Olympian Goddesses? Most of them."

  16. Re: Infinite Crisis

See I just don't see how that, Superman as the 1st Superhero, is really important. Sure chronologically the character is started at the dawn of the heroic age but that does not mean that the character has to remain at the dawn of the heroic age.

IMO only the origin of the LSH was utterly thrown out, and with Giffen's run Mon-El/Valor was supposed to fill that gap. ZERO Hour is what really messed up the continuity not Crisis IMO. Crisis made things much simpler...much and this is from a guy that got into comics after Crisis.

  17. Re: Seeking suggestions for a power build

This character is essentially the reverse of the old Firestorm debate. I love the idea but I have never gotten the character to click right on paper. The latest iteration came out something like this:

    n pt Multipower (Body Swap/Merger)

n Ultra Slot Duplication (Nebula as disembodied Computer or Transdimensional Desolid character +100% Different)

n Ultra Slot Duplication (Nebula as Multiform allowing you to use her powers instead of Stockades)

But the idea is like I said clunky and very expensive given the 100% difference for the advisor role of the subordinate character. Still you get two characters to tango with.

  18. Re: Infinite Crisis

    Ah but how?

    That is the catch.

If he is an even more holier than thou boyscout than the existing Superman how does that work?

Would you like an alterego of you jumping out of the closet and saying "Tut Tut! You have strayed far young Savinen! I will show you the true path!"

I am anxiously awaiting the writing on the next issues, hopefully Liefield will not be allowed to do anything on them for the next year.

  19. Re: Infinite Crisis

    I picked up IC#1 today and I can say I liked it...wholeheartedly.

The team really has been working overtime to mesh all these stories together. True if you had not been reading JSA you might not know who the Freedom Fighters are, and thus would be a bit confused when Uncle Sam, The Human Bomb, Phantom Girl and Black Condor appear only to die. Their presence and the "if you survive this it will make you stronger." statements from the villianous opposition help make the story.

I am of mixed feelings about Grampy Superman and Superboy-Prime coming back into continuity. I like Conner Kent/Con-El, but I can see where he will have to go. Superboy has to be a Legionaire so that his iconic presence can anchor the LSH (Cosmic boy turned fascist I am looking at you!!!), but the Elder Statesman Superman is just unwanted IMO. Superman has a few weaknesses one of them is mind control: Dominus did it, Brainiac did it, Dr. Psycho did it, The Slug did it, and now Max Lord did it. Yes, an out of whack Superman is the world's worst nightmare. But, Superman has great PR and is what many people are not: honestly contrite about his mistakes. When people are injured by him and his actions he cares. So what purpose is ESS going to serve?

I await IC#2 to find out.

    Anxiously!

  20. Re: Power Limitation ideas for Multiform

That is what she said. Don't confuse the metagame mechanics with the flavor text. Cyclops either has a mental block on his powers or a physical defect; either means the eyeblasts are uncontrollable.

More to the point, no I can't think of any other because of the limited information we have about your character. In the end I would just suggest if the character is not unbalancing (read as overpowering the rest of the PCs in the game) that the extra CP used in building her just be ignored and price the Multifom correctly.

Points can sometimes be a hinderance.

  21. Re: Making a Force Field Bubble

Extending the FF to 16 people is only a +1/2 more; unless you're talking about a huge bubble, that should be ample for most circumstances. Moreover, FW is relatively easy to blow down or bypass with indirect attacks, which I got the impression she wanted to avoid. But any way you build it there will be tradeoffs.

Another way to do it would be to use IPE Extra Limbs and a FF which affects carried objects, but that seems rather silly to me.

How about an AoE Succor (or Aid) PD/ED, with the SFX that it's a force field? Succor can legitimately be an AoE power since it's not a defense power, even though in this case it's acting as one.

This idea has merit. It will even fit in an EC with the character's regular force field. To make it simple just use standard effect and by convention don't continually pump the SUCCOR. I might buy a 1rPD/1rED Force Field usable by say 64 others simulanteously and Succor this to avoid the resistant defenses question but the idea is sound.
