  2. Re: Instantaneous Communications plus Time Dilation Equals ??? Well, it is math from relativity theory, which is way above my pay grade. Example: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wormhole#Metrics There is a FAQ here http://www.webfilesuci.org/WormholeFAQ.html

  5. Re: An interesting article on the Physics of Space Combat Yes, I've have a million people tell me about that link. The Gizmodo article is actually a re-print, the original article (with comments) is here: http://josephshoer.com/blog/?p=377 The technical experts behind my Atomic Rocket website are of the opinion that Mr. Shoer has made some classic mistakes in analysis of space combat, and they would like to be on his hostile Ph.D panel. But he does make a few good points.
  6. Re: If you Had to Pick, ONE (already) Setting, to Run in, What is it? The original Star Trek had the starship Enterprise visiting a new and different strange world with each episode. Roddenberry's pilot show Genesis II had our heroes using a large subway system to explore strange new city-states in a post-apocalyptic world. Stargate has our heroes exploring strange new worlds using the stargate. See the common thread here? All of these allow episodic adventures in fantastically different settings, only limited by the game master's imagination.

  9. Re: Quantum Propulsion Machine May Lead To Propulsion Without Change In Mass Yes, the Nicholas van Rijn stories of Poul Anderson used that sort of drive.

  13. Re: Instantaneous Communications plus Time Dilation Equals ??? Try thinking it through, step by step. Wormhole mouth A is still at Earth because nobody moved it. Year 2100: Wormhole mouth A and wormhole mouth B are in Earth orbit. Wormhole mouth B is loaded into a relativistic starship. The starship moves out of the solar system accelerating to 0.995 c. 2101: Wormhole mouth A is in Earth orbit. Time traveling ships from the year 3101 emerge from Wormhole mouth A, and any present year ship that enter A will be transported to 3101. Wormhole mouth B is in the starship, almost one light year away from Earth. 2150: Wormhole mouth A is in Earth orbit. Wormhole mouth B is in the starship, about 50 light years from Earth. Starship turns around and starts travelling back to Earth. 3100: Starship arrives at Earth and unloads. Now both wormhole mouth A and wormhole mouth B are in Earth orbit. Ships that enter wormhole mouth B will emerge from wormhole mouth A in the year 2100. Time travelers from 2100 will emerge from wormhole mouth B in the present. Wormhole mouth A is still at Earth because nobody moved it. From the Wikipedia article:

  17. Re: December 27, 2004: The Day Earth Survived the Greatest Stellar Attack -Ever A gamma-ray burster that was 3,000 light years away could wipe out half the Earth's ozone layer and cause a mass extinction. At 100 light years it would fry the Earth. However, such bursters emit their radiation in a narrow beam, not in all directions. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamma-ray_burst A supernova could only wipe out half the ozone layer if it was within about 27 light years.

  21. Re: First Known Binary Star Is Discovered to Be a Triplet, Quadruplet, Quintuplet, Se Ah, and the first exploration ship with post-current-tech reaches Alcor in a matter of a few years, only to unleash the horror. The Tarantula-Crabs empire slaughters the exploration mission, reverse-engineers the propulsion system, and the Mizarians are blissfully unaware that the count-down to total war has begun. "But doctor! These telescopic observations seem to indicate a vast array of spacecraft approaching our star systems! They might be hostile. We have to start building defenses." "Bah, sthuff und nonsense you silly underling tool of der military-industrial complex! You probably botched der observation. Und anyway efferbody knows that any species that is advanced enough to make spaceships has also grown out of war mongering and udder hostile sthuff. " ( and when the invasion fleet arrives, the situation will look like one of the Terminator movies, except all the nasty robots will have eight legs )
