  1. Re: Did you kill Malone?

Malone is dead. Murdered. You have a 10 EGO suspect and 4d6 telepathy. Cool.

Malone was murdered five years ago, so on the face of it that is EGO+20:reading memories. You are unable to dig out the information from your suspect's brain.

What if you are cunning though? Well, not that cunning: just ask him, "Did you kill Malone?"

That is going to make him think about it, and it then becomes a surface thought and reading it is easy, n'est pas?

Well, I dunno. Seems a bit too easy to me. What do you think?

First of all in your scenario he's a suspect for a crime thats 5 years old, hes not in court with your three telepaths and in a universe where telepaths are plentiful then there would be legislation regarding their use. To obtain a search warrant to search a location you need probable cause, it follows to read someones mind then you would also require a warrant and need to provide the same probable cause. no court is going to allow you to go fishing to see what you can find. an admission of guilt must be spoken aloud to count . if you say hes thinking that he killed him then you have admitted to a crime. if telepathy is not widespread then you have no three telepaths in court and your 'hunch' gets thrown out. In fact if you are not careful as you seem to know all the details of the murder you had better be able to provide an alibi as you could qualify as a suspect.

  2. Re: Did you kill Malone?

The perp hasnt made an admission, hes never made an admission, all the court has is your word that he committed the crime and you've already admitted to the court that you've committed a psi crime. As were in a universe that you postulate has multiple psis then its not unheard of that you have in some ways altered his mind. This is starting to get boring stop changing the scenario to suit whatever predetermined result you've arrived at.

As for asking an individual have you killed someone andthen reading their surface thoughts its hardly subtle and definatly not new. anyone whos played a psi character has done it. and there has been more than one film portraying exactly what you've described.

  3. Re: Did you kill Malone?

You never said you were in court and that only works under that system if it is accepted. I'm talking like telepathy is something new. Furthermore you were making it sound like you were trying to find out from a possible suspect. I believe that a person is not allowed to be forced to testify against themself and you would be required to provide reason for subjecting a person to a mind scan or truth detector. From your initial post under a system where the three telepaths are used then telepathy is more widespread and more common knowledge, in that universe your character who initially mindread the suspect broke the law and the persons rights to get the knowledge that he murdered malone and any and all evidence obtained from an ilegal search is usually ruled inadmissable and thrown out.

  4. Re: Did you kill Malone?

And in a court of law its inadmissable the point I made earlier about seeing how he did it without letting him realise is the only way to get admissable evidence to the police. Your reading his surface thought are at best hearsay and its unlikely he'll raise his hands and say its a fair cop. As a lawyer you should know that it doesnt matter what you know its what you can prove that matters. Unless of course you are your own executioner.

  5. Re: Did you kill Malone?

Given that the accumulated memories of a person are probably greater that a large library I feel as well that a telepath must make complimentry skill rolls ,something similar to research in order to find what thet,re after otherwise they are liable to be in the poor fellows head for some time. You could use this analogy to keep a mystery safer for longer. Give the player a large encylcopedia and tell them if they can't find the pin you've inserted into it before Malone walks of then they havent been able to locate the information they were after. If you apply this to a telepaths mind searches then it makes it much harder for them and probably more realistic to boot.

  6. Re: Did you kill Malone?

If you have read/seen their memories using telepathy then you know how the murder was committed, where the body is along with any evidence pertaining to the crime and you have the motive. This information sent annomously to the police and your character watching the site to prevent the perp moving it should enable him to be brought to justice.

  7. Re: Holy Susceptibilities: God and Champions

to make something holy requires the intercession of the divine after some form of prayer/blessing and in order to reach the divine requires true heartfealt faith. as for the use of holy objects such as crosses etc remember the scenes from frightnight whereupon Peter Vincent fearless vampire hunter is taunted that he has to have faith. In addition to that it must also be said that evidence such as a demon etc puts forth proof that there must be a god as the devil is a cast down angel and if you're going toe to toe with him then there must exist an opportunity to call upon god if you come to realise that god exists..

Also whilst not within hero but in a more freeform set of campaigns, we always allowed that magic was an application of the unconscious through ritual focus, we always allowed that the ability to keep nasties at bay through a persons use of a holy item is down to a form of psionic forcefield. It is therefore possible for the hypothosised insane man to hold a vampire at bay using a hubcap if he believes. In my book the strongest forces are love, faith and hope

  8. Re: The Law

For example: Our hero, the Obsessed Vigilante, uncovers a huge heroin shipment down by the docks. He busts in, beats up the crroks, makes them snort their own product so they can feel what they're doing to others, beats them up again and then calls the police.

By the time the lawyers are done, the evidence is suppressed, confessions are suppressed, and the city is facing a lawsuit from the crooks who claim their civil rights were violated by a 'rogue cop' pretending to be a free agent. The DA announces he has to drop charges and says "...and it's all OV's fault!!"

The huge shipment of dope is destroyed so the obsessed vigilante has done a good job. And who's to say that when he's done making them see the error of their ways that they don't withdraw their lawsuit, failing that they can always dissapear.

  9. Re: The Human Polygraph

On Angel (TV show) there was a minor character who could not lie. He became incensed when people asked him questions, particulalry personal ones. Felt it was an invasion of his privacy.

There is always the possibility of not answering the question or telling the questioner to mind their own bussiness. There are degrees of truth, it is possible to tell the truth without volunteering an entire lifestory. Consider the chinese who I've been led to believe find it very impolite to say no to a person, they are very good or can become very good in ensuring that they are not put in the position of having to say no. This can likewise be used with the individual who is incapable of lying, he can avoid the question, refuse to answer, be brief etc

  10. Re: historically correct simulation of armour

The damage that would incapacitate the man would be the transferred physical energy somewhat akin to a bodyblow. The broadsword wasnt really supposed to cut through the armour. To penetrate armour then you would use a pick, the idea being to put as much force into as small an area as possible. Probably the best way to kill a knight was by using a dagger and stabbing up under his arm in the areas not protected by armour.

  11. Re: new campaign how to start

Given that the CU convention is that the powers are the result of magic and that in many examples of the fantasy genre use of magic ages and burns out the individual that uses it you could aply this to your players. Take some young vain character whos been particulary heroic and when they notice their hands and reflection then they are more worn and aged. You could also apply some aspects of aging such as arthritis and late onset diabetis. If you research ailments and such of the elderly then you could have fun with it.

  12. Re: naming super crimes

Anyway have you come up with any good terms for super villain crimes, mental powers like mind control, mental torture etc especially seem ripe for new crimes with new names.

The old chestnut of stealing WMD and threatening the city unless a ransom is met should really have a cool media friendly name like ‘Metrocide’?

You dont need new names or crimes all you need is a little imagination and creative use of the existing criminal codes.

Take your city of one million inhabitants, when the villian is captured he gets charged with one million counts of extortion, conspiracy to committ murder etc. If all sentences run one after the other then hes going away for a very long time
