  1. Re: Create a NEW Zodiac

I have recently moved, and in the move I found a bunch of my old Champs books. One of these was the Zodiac Conspiracy. This inspired me to come up with my own Zodiac.

While trying to think of things, I kept falling into the same stereotypes. Taurus- bull man, Virgo - Egoist etc.

So I figured I'd try here. Does anyone have any creative ideas for power sets for the 12 members of the Zodiac?

As an example of what I'm looking for, a past GM of mine once had us fight The Elementals. The Water Elemental was a human depth charge (his body would blow up), and his earth elemental would change into a Bulldozer. So let's get creative!

How about Scorpio as a shrinking character with a Variable Advantage/Special Effects Energy Blast?

  2. Re: resist being stunned by EGO attack with EGO not CON?

I was thinking it would make more sense if stun from an ego attack had to exceed your EGO rather than your CON to stun you. Any thoughts?

I don't know if it makes more sense, but it's an interesting idea. I can see where EGO could be used for ECV attacks. I think you should be careful though, I'd only allow it with attacks that are only mental ones. If there are any physical effect to the attack then it's CON for stunning.

I never thought about this before, thanks for the idea.

  3. Re: CHAR: Green Lantern

I guess I can't nitpick the rep (Since it was already covered) but if you really wanted the greatest guy ever called Green Lantern' date=' well we all know that's Alan. right? :D[/quote']

The greatest Green Lantern is the greatest GUY.;):D :D

  4. Re: CHAR: Green Lantern

Most of GL's powers are basicly TK. Whether it be flight, force field, force wall, it all could be a form of TK.

I'd make the Power Ring a VPP, with a minor limitation "anything that can be sensible linked to TK". OIF as well.

It'll also have Universal Translater, some Analyze. All OIF.

  5. Re: [Post-Apocalyptic HERO] Stephen King's "The Stand

For something like this I wouldn't tell the players what type of campaign it is. I'd have them make up a normal person, be it a construction worker, a soldier, or a buisnessman, whatever. Then I'd spring the concept on them.

After this it could go a few ways. Maybe roleplay each person seperately until they meet up, or write a story of what's going on and how they meet.

I've actually considered doing a George Romero/The Walking Dead zombie type campaign like this.

  6. Re: The Blood

Well let's see... Aaron can take a few months and update and publish a new Strike Force/Blood/Circle book or he can take that time to write a new Star Wars novel. One will pay him $3' date='000 [pdfs would pay even less'] and the other will pay him $15,000. Which would you choose? :)

Both. I'd choose to get some volunteers to do a bit of the character updates. I don't think much of the fluff part needs a major update. Take a day to do some research and find some good people to help. I honestly don't think it's a major undertaking.

Of course this is just an outsiders opinion. He may very well, for whatever reason, not be able to do this.

While having this stuff updated would be nice, I can live without it, or just updated myself.

  7. Re: The Blood

It's a major mistake for Hero Games to spend any of its money publishing books of characters they do not own the rights to. There's enough of that hastle with 1E through 4E characters.

Aaron makes good money writing Star Wars and Terminator novels, and he also has plenty of artistic friends to supply needed art. If he wants the material published he can come up with the few thousand dollars to do it himself, IMO.

I don't give a crap who publishes it. There seems to be a bit of interest in these books (The Blood..Strikeforce). I can't imagine it would be that much of an effort to update them and publish them in PDF form (for a price of course).

  8. Re: The Blood

Aaron has considered various options for publication. I would imagine that if it did come out under HERO System it would be for 5E. Since current Hero Games management isn't looking to publish it directly themselves, Aaron has to explore alternatives; but that would take a lot of time from the parts of his career that actually earn him a decent living. ;)

Personally I think Hero Games is making a mistake NOT publishing this stuff.

  9. Re: The Blood

Has anyone bothered to ask him about his plans' date=' if any, for the Blood, the Circle, and METE?[/quote']

Come to think of it, I don't have the Circle and Mete book, and haven't really spent time looking at it. A buddy of mine has it. Is there a connection with The Blood?

As for as my plans. Frightner(Affrightner) has a plan that will mess up most of Millinium City's citizens. That will allow him and a few others to take what they want. Also one of the player character will turn out to be of the Blood.

  10. Re: The Blood

nHammer, this isn't exactly what you're looking for; but Adrian Ownby posted a nice 4E HERO adventure, "Blood Rites," featuring all-new Blood characters based on Aaron Allston's original characters and the Blood homeworld of Ean. That might be of some use to you.

Adrian put it up for free download on the old Red October BBS, the archives from which are now hosted on Shelley Chrystal Mactyre's website. You can get it by going here and clicking on BLOOD2.ZIP.

I have it already, though haven't gone over it yet, but thanks for the heads up.

  11. Re: The Blood

As far as I know' date=' the Blood are still owned by Aaron Allston. He'd be the one to ask about 5th Edition versions. As such, I'm not sure if DOJ would allow 5th Edition character sheets posted here.[/quote']

Maybe I didn't make it completely clear. I was looking more for fan interpretation of The Blood in 5th ED format. I really don't need character sheets. I got almost 20 years experience with Champions, I can remake the characters myself.

I'm looking more to update The Blood in the Champions Universe. Full blown character updates not necessary, but a few ideas on how people(if anybody did) update them.

  12. Everybody remember The Blood and Dr McQuark?

    OK, good..Now forget Dr. McQuark..

Has anybody worked on bringing The Blood to 5th Ed.? I've done a quick search of the boards and haven't seen anything.

I've been giving it a lot of thought, and I want to involve them in a new campaign. I'm going to start writing up The Blood's origin and rework some of the characters. One example is Affrighter will become The Frightner. His one psi power will be a Mental Paralysis link with a continuis ego attack, may also link an ego drain with them. Basicly he's giving people horrible visions that's really screwing their mind up.

Anyway, if anybody has done some work on The Blood for 5th please share if you want.

  13. Re: Too many stats in Hero

This is a continuation of a theme that started in the Fantasy Hero forum. In an effort not to hijack that thread, it has been moved here.

My idea was to fold STR, CON, and BODY into one stat ("BODY") costing six points, and INT and EGO into "MIND", costing 3 points. PD & ED would be based on the same stat, although they could be modified individually. SPD was eliminated.

But I have to disagree with you, and I think that your analysis is a simplistic way of looking at the problem I felt needed to be solved. First, Hero INT has never been a measure of cognitive ability, but rather how fast one reacts to situations. This is why Perception rolls used to be based on INT, but Sciences weren't. In fact, this is mentioned in the flavor text (FRED pg. 23): someone with a low INT could be a brilliant scientist, he just can't come up with things right now. Second, eliminating INT was simply my way of dealing with the fact that people can't roleplay subtle differences in intelligence. Realistically, someone can play: themselves, someone dumber than themselves, someone really dumb, and with the help of skills and other gaming tools, someone way smarter than themselves. One or two points of difference in the INT stat is a false statistic, and is only there for metagaming purposes. Pendragon, one of my favourite games, doesn't have any sort of intelligence statistic.

Want someone really smart with a low "EGO", using my system? Easy - just make MIND fairly average, and buy a lot of skill levels with "smart skills". Conversely, if you want someone of average intelligence with great Ego powers, just up their EGO CV.

Regarding the physical characteristics, I think that what you're describing is a consequence of "Heroese", rather than any verisimilitude. Most people with a higher physical endurance are also stronger and capable of taking more physical punishment. And it's difficult to be stronger than normal, but have a poor constitution. Those that do, can easily be represented by 1)reducing END (strong, but has asthma or the like); or 2)physical disads. The same argument has always held true for drains and the like. It's silly to just drain someone's "BODY" without affecting their STR or CON. As people get ill, they get weak.

Hero already does things the way you suggest would be bad for the game: there is no functional difference between an EB and martial arts, once you take away the lims that make each up.

And finally, by only having four characteristics rather than eight, and only four figured CHAs instead of six, it cuts the characteristic work for new players. Which I think is more important than anything else. Again, I think the age of Chivalry and Sorcery-style never-ending lists of characteristics is long past.

If you're playing this way, you're not playing the Hero System.

If people want to change everything, why don't they just make their own game?

  14. Re: Mental Entangles and the Weak-Willed

I've never been very fond of the mental entangle/mental paralysis.

    It's inherently unbalanced.

The standard entangle of N active points has roughly a 50-50 chance of getting blown away with one use of any common attack power of N active points. (energy or physical, normal or killing) Probably 90% of all published enemies or character have that. Maybe some of the martial artists might get hosed a bit, but they typically have high DCVs to avoid getting entangled in the first place.

The standard mental entangle of N active points will survive at least one breakout attempt by 90% of the published enemies. I don't have any firm numbers, but I suspect for common values (60AP for example) some number ranging from a large minority to a close majority will not be able to break out of such an entangle without outside assistance, pushing or haymakers.

Mental entangles are also no range mod, affect desolid characters more often than not with no extra point costs and probably can't be missile deflected.

Martial artists are the most common suckers for mental paralysis, since they typically rely on their DCV for defense. You could paralyze a brick, but chances are, their mentallist will break him out later. You could land a few hits on the frozen brick, but you still have to fight through their defenses. You paralyze a martial artist and you have a good opportunity to lay them out for good. Their mentallist could break them out, but it won't do much good if the poor martial artist is GMO.

Even a mediocre tactician can turn a mental entangle into a death sentence. I really dislike these things.

    $0.02

Some good points here. I recently finished making a character for a new game. The character has a Mental Paralysis attack. When I use the attack I use OCV vs DCV, not ECV, and Mental Defence adds to Ego. I felt it made the attack more acceptable and in line with the character concept.
