  1. Re: Worst Fear!

    Bastion:

Dr Sebastian Castle is rarely afraid of anything. Sure, he's apprehensive and worries, but fear is usually replaced with grim resolve and "what if" scenarios that lead to solutions... That's Dr. Castle, mind you. I know different!

If ever a time came when Dr. Molly Checkett was endangered or, god forbid, killed Bastion would loose his mind.

    - Sure, Molly was his former lab assistant. It was during the years they spent together working in tandem that Sebastian grew to love her.

    - Its also true that Molly Checkett used Sebastian’s emotions to manipulate him, eventually usurping his Quantum theories which she used to become a doctor and get one of the most prestigious scientific jobs in the country. Her actions left Dr. Castle lost, alone, unfunded and bankrupt.

    - Its also a fact that the wiley Dr. Molly Checkett still keeps in contact with Bastion, occasionally going so far as to steal his newest research and claim it as her own in order to maintain her influential position at Antares Corporation.

    - Yes, Bastion knows she's doing it. But what can he do? Though he'd deny it; he deeply loves her to this day and realizes that only his work will keep here where she wants to be.

If anything serious were to endanger or harm her... he might go fetal. (But he doesn't know:sneaky: )

  2. Re: Champions Characters DEX Inflation Why?

When a soldier fires on the Hulk' date=' the Thing or any typical comic book Brick, does he hit about 25% of the time (4 OCV vs. 7 DCV) or more like 50% (1 lower OCV than target DCV) or even 62.5% of the time (equal OCV's and DCV's)? My experience is that they pretty much always hit (allowing the Brick to demonstrate how tough he is as the bullets bounce off). Luke Cage is a bit of a faster Brick, and he still normally gets tagged by punks with guns.[/quote']

Obviously I have a different view of "normal" than you do.

A soldier is a trained warrior. True, his base stats may be just a little bit higher than 10s (11-15?) but you also must consider training. Every US military man or woman has at least 1 skill level in his or her weapon. In most cases they have 2, 3 or maybe even more. Add to that the weapons used by the military. Scopes and superior design could also add skill levels.

Now, go back to your example and assume that the military man has a DEX no larger than an untrained individual (4) and the Hulk has a 7...

Soldier: OCV: 4 + 3 skill levels with weapon + 1 ranged skill level

    Hulk: OCV: 7

Looks to me like the soldier will always have a good chance to hit. If you add auto fire to the mix he'll have several hits a turn even if he misses 50% of his attacks.

It seems to me that the real argument is BASE Dexterities, not an assumed OCV/DCV parody.

  3. Re: Is there any originality left in comics?

    Manchine,

If I can get back to your (?you're? heh) original question...

Comic book creation, whether it be the art or the writing, is like any other creative endeavor. Those suffering from the melancholy of everyday life or the self-proclaimed sophisticates that live in a world defined by their own constipated paradigms will always herald such beliefs. Perhaps, at the very core of creativity it has all been done before…

    BUT NOT BY YOU!!!

Each attempt to at originality has the potential to push our sphere of understanding beyond existing limitations. If we allow ourselves to subscribe to the “its all been done” paradigm we might as well stay home and become the ultimate couch potatoes. Count me out! The key is not whether or not something’s been done before… but rather the validity of your current endeavor.

So, how do you achieve validity? Good question. To some validity is subjective and warrants little thought and less discussion. However, I would say those individuals are destined to struggle, hoping for luck (or “happy accidents”) to elevate their work beyond mediocrity.

My advice: Learn all you can about the history of your craft. Find a mentor (living or otherwise) and learn what he went through to produce his craft. This way you can be certain that the work you do is built on a foundation of knowledge and understanding. Then envelop yourself in the work of your contemporaries. Seek out the large and small players and surround yourself with others who have embraced the creative process. Through collaboration and insightful discussion you’ll find that your ideas expand and your limits fall away. Working in a vacuum is truly the best way to reproduce something that’s already been done.

Educate your mind, emancipate your creativity and elevate your art.

Sounds simple… But doing anything right is hard work.

  4. Re: NEMESIS SQUADRON: New Game Packet!

I think I played in one of those games. Loads of fun' date=' if you have the right people; annoying as hell if you don't.[/quote']

    It IS you!!! :celebrate

    How the heck are you?

About NEMESIS SQUADRON... Yup. It's a sophisticated game that requires sophisticated players. It's evolved quite a bit since the days when your character graced the corridors of the Requiem!

It's funny how power gamers are often stymied by a game that's designed for power gamers.:eg: Especially when they find out that their worst enemy is equally as powerful as they are... and their bunk mate!!!

No matter what the genre... great players always rise to meet the challenge.

  5. This is the game we play:

    NEMESIS SQUADRON

Nemesis Squadron was originally (loosely) based on the old comic book Alien Legion and the movie The Dirty Dozen. However, it's grown far beyond those humble beginnings.

This is Part 1 of the packet. Part 2 is too large to post these boards. If you like what you see and seriously want to see more I'll e-mail you Part 2 (Including character creation rules and 18 races taken from various Sci-Fi sources). PM me with your e-mail address included please.;)

  6. Re: New Ship Map

    Here's something I don't usually say....

Holy friggin' realism, Batman!!!:jawdrop: :jawdrop: :jawdrop:

If you could do the same thing with something someone else has written, you could get some work in Digital Hero....

I don't see a problem doing this for someone else. I've been a Graphics professional (from lowly Designer to Creative Director) since '92... It's what I do!

Working for HERO would be fun.

  7. Re: Ship Map

That's a good picture. Did you create any stats for it?

    Thanks!

Actualy the ship-map was created as a platform for a very complicated person-to-person battle. It was never intended to fight other ships. However, because we all know the damage that a few determined Hero characters can do, I did create stats for walls, floors and just about everything else in the ship.

It wouldn't take much to come up with ship stats for though.

  8. Re: New Ship Map

    That's a nice map!

What did you make it with, and how long did it take to create?

    Thanks.

I pulled free stuff off the web... a corridor here and a bed there, made allot of textures myself and put it all together from scratch.

It took quite a while. The original was created in Photoshop with layers for hull, corridors, rooms, items... etc. etc. and was created at a 1:1 scale. The whole thing is just short of a gig of memory.

I had the 90+" ship printed in full color at 1/2 scale and it was still 4 feet long. We had small, customized player pieces and markers for the actual tournament game to account for the small hex size.

The game was a hoot. If you'd like to know more... let me know. :)

  9. I just wanted to provide the players at Hero with a fun new tool.

Hope you guys can use it... I originally made it for a 2004 tournament. I recently dug it up to use in a new Hero Star Wars game we just started. Worked GREAT!!! It has a key, but I'll let you fill out the details on your own.

    ENJOY!!!

  10. Re: The Forumverse name game

Oooh... Stormraven screams out for an American Indian hero.

Though his feet were bloodied by months of walking the scorched earth of the western deserts Ghost Dancer’s resolve remained reslolute... As the long dead spirit of Many Spirit Caller told him so shall he spread the word to the world...

    Stormraven is coming!

For those who worship the light, a hero to lead the way back to the one people. For those who worship the dark... a tumult as never before witnessed in the world of man.

Witness the rebirth of a nation… STORMRAVEN!

  11. Re: What Would Your Character Do #33

Bastion is a pure scientist (not a meta). He'd probably just change the TV over to the NASA channel. :)

Later, after a bit of contemplation, he'd bend his considerable mental and physical might towards righting any wrongs committed by the misguided metahumans who attacked the Vatican.

It's entirely possible that Bastion would be quite worried about the socio-political backlash of such theoretical segregation. A philosophical schism between two groups, such as the anti-meta proponents are creating, could lead to quite a bit of long-term trouble.

  12. Re: God Package...

    Enforcer84,

As you know (if you visited the site mentioned above) I'm in the market for a few (dozen) gods (Especially Olympians, Egyptians and Norse). Would you mind if I purloined your versions for my tournament in August?

You'll be sure to get all the credit (as will those who have or will help(ed) me out). :)

  13. Re: Gods, Stat!

I'd also just spend a great deal of time just winging it.

Winging it was what I had in mind... However, the players at ZARCON are some of the very best I've ever met. I just want to have all of my Ps and Qs in order... just in case.

Truth is, even though the gods will be depleted due to their recent warfare the supers really have no chance of defeating them on a physical level. I've created several "anchors" (like the Orb of Ra) that allow the gods to manifest on the Prime Material Plane. Destroying such an item will effectively banish the pantheon it is assisting. Unless they figure this out (and at this level of gaming I'm sure they will) they are in for a real bad day!
