  1. Re: How to Build: A Timelord

Offhand: Universal Translator' date=' since the Doctor can communicate with anyone in the universe. He can also share this ability with his companions. I remember a Tom Baker episode (The Curse of Mandragora?) mentioning this. The new series also allows the Doctor and his companions to translate written material.[/quote']

They have established in some of the new episodes, that this is a power of the TARDIS, not the timelord. And the TARDIS is what shares its abilities with his companions, not the doctor.

  2. Re: Speed of Travel

Part of the reason why I'm considering more fixed travel times is because it provides a logical dimension to me for determining how big known space is' date=' and I'd like to have a harder science fiction feel as far as technology goes (though I admit FTL is pretty rubbery). [/quote']

Well, the math (read, theoretical physics) is literally almost there to make the theory a possibility. The math was there, but very few people could understand it, in the late 1950's early 1960's.

The difficulty with the current theory, though, is that the power consumption according to that model is enormous even for small items, let alone human-sized or larger objects.

  3. Re: Need crystalmancy college

We've been using a gem-based system in the world we play in. They are the focus' used in the magical system, each containing spells with limitations. As they are used, one becomes more proficient in them and in effect makes the spells stored in them stronger (I was envisioning something like FF7, but non-transferable and a little more flexible).

There are obviously different gems throughout the world, and the specific family of gems (i.e. diamonds, pearls, etc.) related to a different family of spells (necromantic, illusionary, etc.).

There could be different diamonds that had different spells within the family, so you would not be stuck starting with one spell and using it before you could branch out to get others. Also, the basic spell was infused within the gem, with the severity of the limitations based upon the strength of the spell both in and out of combat.

After a certain number of uses in combat (out of combat practices helps a little, but not nearly at the same rate as using it under stress/pressure), and the limitations could be eased some or you could increase the potency/duration/area of effect of the spell.

I used it as a skill based system (3/2), with a -1 for every 10 active points of the spell (this is my faulty memory...will look up at home). There was also a perk to allow you to combine different gems so you didn't look like a walking jewelry shop looking for the right "spell". Gems of the same family always combined without issue, while gems of different families sometimes produced cross spells unique to what was originally in the gems.

Unfortunately, I don't have my notes with me here, but I can post more when I get home this afternoon, if anyone's interested.

  4. Re: Speed of Travel

I would probably say one or two lightyears per week, so that travel out to the frontier is a journey that you have to want to take. Besides, the technology is still experimental. You could always have it malfunction, and after a month they are far beyond where they are intending to go.

  5. Re: How do your Star Heroes get around?

Actually we use a few main ones, all depend on the 'speed of plot' we need.

    1. FTL: 15 LY/HR is the basic and usual means.

    2. Jump Drive: Teleport/megascale = 1/LY with the travel time being variable.

    3. Jump Gates: Instant Teleportation with a transdimentsional element, that allows travel across the galaxy.

    5. Slipstream: Think Andromedia.

    and

    6. Lienar Flight: One race has the ability to move at LY in inches/phase.

How do you get them all to work in the same campaign? Do certain races have access to certain technologies?

  6. Re: [Campeign Creation Project] Pirates of the Naebbirac Astroid Belt

Ohh' date=' very nice, [b']Silverhawk.[/b] That brings in a possiblity for "pirate points", areas in the gravitational maestrom where things are calm enough for hyperspace to be accessed. Which of course would be places where illegal shipping points would be located - also known as Pirate Havens.

Given the properly powerful computer, these should perhaps not be random. If they were, then it would not be safe at all to jump into, maybe just out of... That could be a fun plot twist, only being able to jump out...

  7. I had a quick question I wanted to pose to you guys to get some opinions... I am trying to figure out a way to create the loot that I am intending to give out over the next few gaming sessions. To now, I haven't really given out a whole lot of things that were "found". Most of the loot that I have given out so far have been things that the party has requested to be made or acquired, and since they have been fairly heroic have only been charged a pittance of what they rightfully should have been charged.

I am trying to stick with what is actually relevant to the situation (i.e. an archer would likely have a very nice, or potentially specialized, bow an possibly different types of arrows for different types of functions). I guess what I am hoping to do is keep the power level fairly consistent and not give one person too much power, and not make it (yet) that the characters can get/buy anything they could ever want...

When you give out loot, magical or otherwise, is there a general rule that you all use in doing so? Do you use a point cost per item?

  8. Re: Demo Game

I agree that you may want to do a fantasy game. But I would also base it off something they are familiar with (if you can gather that ahead of time) to reduce/prevent any learning curve related to the world in question. If you cannot find anything, you could always base it on Lord of the Rings since you would have had to be living under a rock for the past few years not to have heard anything about it.

My suggestion would aslo be to have a handful of characters made up for the players to choose from, that way you don't have to spend an entire session just going through character creation. You can also control how they are involved with each other, etc., etc., etc...

  9. In my first champions game last night, there was a character that had a power armor (theorizing that he got it in prior military service). Here is how he built the power. I was wondering what you all thought of it and if you all would do it any differently.

    30 Armor (10 PD / 20 ED) for 45 real points.

    -1.0 Ablative (body or stun)

-1 Charges (4 per day, out of combat only)

    (45 / 3) = 15

It was interesting. I think he was trying to mimic Master Chief from Halo, with a limited number of recharges to keep the cost down.

    Any thoughts?

    Jonathan

  10. Has anyone had any luck with trying a DC game over e-mail. I am currently not able to play now because of my school/work schedule in my usual gaming group, and they are talking about setting up a PBEM to accomodate my gaming desires.

Has anyone else gotten this to work to any luck?

Has anyone been in a game that failed miserably?

Any suggestions for when we do this that I can pass along?

    Thanks,

    Jonathan
