  1. Re: Ranged killing attack + No rage modifer broke? Ok I have thought a lot about this a lot and agree with most everything said. But first a little history. I am used to playing with experienced games. Unfortunately I always end up running the game. One of my RPG lasted 12 years, and other for 6 years. That said I am now playing with a very raw set of players. We all take turns running the game to let me play. Enter a "Power Gamer, that has since left. I spent a lot of time trying to keep his character under control and I think the others were poisoned by his style. I am used to people self maintaining there characters I have since PUSHED my attack up to 75 active points to merely compete. :-) Our relatively inexperienced player (Mr. 270 points) has just last game pushed himself to the 270 active points which has me thinking about a solution. I severely reinforce killing in my game, and have sent NPC to jail for that as a warning. No player has yet killed but it has been close. The most important thing about a game is fun. If you are not having fun no matter that rules you enforce or not the it is not worth playing. I am now wondering if I should do a "Secret Wars", or have him re-design his character, or let him play with the caution of killing, and the reputation of having that much power, and what it attracts. Thanks for all your input!
  2. Re: Encumbrance The encumbrance rule is only for the Heroic games, and not for Super Heroes. It is on PG 150 of the Hero Games V4 Unless players are hauling around large amounts of stuff constantly, then just ignore it.
  3. Re: Funny game voices I deserved that. :-) But I have to say that was hard to switch voices so quick. The Burg is cool, and love playing that NPC. "Come mere. Ja-wanna go to jell now, or do I hafta teach yinz a lessin?"
  4. Re: Ranged killing attack + No rage modifer broke? @Log LOL so funny. Yeah Hugh. I let it go with the caution that he may face an opponent with a similarly powerful attack. I am not a one trick pony type of player I try to diversify . this guy is not. The most important thing at the end of the day was did everyone have fun. Well that is at least my goal. Thanks all for you vast wisdom.
  5. Re: Question about Armor in Champions I like Bill's no intimate contact or surgery. Both those are big disadvantages. What happens if his body goes below 0 and needs medical attention. He could die. Also what about swimming? Can you say drown? No parachute either. The armor might also reflect a minus to certain dexterity rolls. All these unless he buys off the disadvantage and updates his armor by some weird accident. :-)
  6. Re: Ranged killing attack + No rage modifer broke? @Lord Liaden. What do you mean perceptual abilities? People can see a human that far away. And there is no minus for the distance. @Everyone else - I know I can put in a lot of official unbalanced or broken powers, but I think the range is just too far for that attack. The game has to be fun and you just can't limit every single power for players, especially the ones that are not listed as unbalanced or broken. Even with that power he is no where near a Batman, Spiderman, Superman. And they have exciting adventures. I try to make fun adventures, but have to be careful when rules like "No Range modifier" are so cheep. Yeah he is going to end up as a one trick pony. That said how many experience points do you guys have? We play one a week and they really build up.
  7. What am I missing here? Say someone has a 9D6 Ranged killing attack, plus the no rage modifier. The rules say he has a max range of 5 times his active points which would be 270 active points. Doing the math that gives him a rage of 1350" (hexes) with no minus to hit! So he just says back and peppers anyone in the area before they can get into range?
  8. Re: Funny game voices Very nice keithcurtis. Cool pictures too. I am just glad no one made fun of my NPC voices. LOL But truth be told Players seem to like it no matter how good or bad you are at it. Just as an idea maybe we can make voices for each other games. What a surprise for the players when we use them during the game. http://www.protectors.frih.net/index.html
  9. Re: Roll Your Own Hex Grid PDF The reason I suggested a gif is, because of the way it mathematically works. A jpg will always be a smaller size ( and lose image quality) for photographs with millions of colors. But if the color pallet is small and there are large areas of the same exact color then a gif will be much smaller than a jpg plus it has no quality loss! web page http://www.protectors.frih.net/index.html
  10. Re: Roll Your Own Hex Grid PDF Mantis, if you changed that file to a 2 color .gif your file size would really drop. Also then reducing the dpi before you print would kill the jaggies.
  11. Re: Multiple Attacks in a Phase Well if it is not for a player character why even spend the time with a build? Just say it has x number of attacks and that is a natural ability for that species. Sort of like you have 5 toes on each foot! Skipping those steps lets you focus more on your game and less on the mechanics. Though it it for a Player Character or a leaning experience then yes go for the point build.
  12. Re: Experience increasing Really? I thought it would give more rounded characters because the lower level attabutes and powers would be cheeper.
  13. Re: Lets Talk Disads: Enraged/Berserk I think you are missing the point Manic Typist. He bought that disadvantage so while he is a highly trained warrior, he has a character flaw. If you didn't want him to have that flaw then don't buy the disadvantage.
  14. Re: Funny game voices Lol Web http://www.protectors.frih.net/index.html
  15. Re: Experience increasing I was just going to say that is exactly how experience works in Runequest. I loved that system BTW. D&D could learn a lot from RQ. *** Good point Egyptoid, Though we go up much too fast for my taste. I like a slower growing campaign. Web: http://www.protectors.frih.net/index.html
  16. As you get better at something, it usually get harder to improve. I was thinking about levels and abilities. After your initial buy, I think it would make it more fun to increase the difficulty to improve. It would also make it more rewarding to have say, a 40 Strength. For example after your initial buy of strength, each additional buy would cost increasingly more experience. So you could go up in plateaus like real life. I know that would involve more record keeping so there must be a better way to do it. Either way that is something I would like to see in future versions of the game.
  17. Re: Lets Talk Disads: Enraged/Berserk WOW I really like that idea Labrat. having to break the Psych Limit disadvantage is an awesome idea. Reps to you! It really would help role playing too, coming up with reason or actions why you are doing the things you are. Too bad you are on the other side of PA it would be fun to have a joint game some night. http://www.protectors.frih.net/index.html
  18. Re: Lets Talk Disads: Enraged/Berserk @Manic Typist - But remember Berserk is a disadvantage and you should not make a graceful way around it. You bought it so you are Enraged. till you recover. That is what disadvantages are all about. http://www.protectors.frih.net/index.html
  19. Do you ever change you voice when you play for different NPC characters? Well I try, sometimes more successfully then others. Here are few voices in our game. This is one of my favorite NPC's a 21 year old nerd hero, that quotes comic books, never had a girl friend, and plays video games when not fighting crime. http://www.protectors.frih.net/Heros/CaptainKayless.html This was a hard one. Two jewel thieves are surprised by The Burgh, a super hero with a Pittsburgh accent. It was hard switching between the 3 voices. Yes I know one of the Jewel thieves sounds a little like the Burgh, but I did the best I could. http://www.protectors.frih.net/Heros/TheBurgh.html Of cource this is not my voice, but my neices. She did a great job for this scenario: http://www.protectors.frih.net/scenarios/Season01/KillerFashions.html This goes to show that gaming can be creative, work on acting abilities, and not just rolling dice. My wife was once a little upset that I play geek games till I pointed out that I do go out all night drinking, I am home with nice friends that she knows, it is relatively inexpensive, and there is zero chance of talking to strange women. She now supports this activity. LOL Anyone else use voices in there games? What kind? web site: http://www.protectors.frih.net/index.html
  20. Re: Roll Your Own Hex Grid PDF For big battles, not in a flat area, I bought a huge amount of tiles for Hero Scape. They build into great scenery, especially with the bridge. It is not cheep but I found nothing better for the times when you need something like that. We use figures for every battle no matter how big or small.
  21. Re: Roll Your Own Hex Grid PDF McCoy, You don't play with figures on a grid? For everyone, how do you play? I used heavily modified hero clix figures on a hex grid.
  22. Re: Roll Your Own Hex Grid PDF I printed a hex sheet like that, then went to Wall Mart and bought a HUGE sheet of clear plastic and some sharpies. Tracking the grid on to my flexible plastic I now have a great gaming board. I play with the sharpie side down and use dry erase markers for rooms etc.
