  1. Re: Don't be a hater! Noob here, with my 1 cent: I don't know if this is exactly on topic, but I can say as someone who was drawn to Hero System by this board, FREd is really difficult to a new player. Admittedly, I have ZERO local support in my quest to learn this system, but I bought Sidekick to learn the basics...and I couldn't generate a working Champions character out of it. So I bought the full FREd thinking, surely it must make more sense in the complete rules. Nope. Now, I'm not a dunce. I'm 32 and I have a "real" job writing technical proposals. But to me, after spending $65+ dollars, I should have enough information to generate a character. But Power generation just seems completely arbitrary with no discernable formula for cost. After getting some help from an incredibly generous board member (who asked me not to use his name) I have a usable character for the PBEM I joined. However, I have no idea how the numbers were constructed and I can't even reverse engineer a theory. Now, I love this board and the people on them. But a system doesn't seem very successful if a new player can't pick it up and play.
  2. Re: Help a Newbie - Sacramento I appreciate the offer, I'm just not sure anyone can help me via e-mail/message board. That's why I posted the FtF request. Everyone on these forums have been amazingly helpful and understanding (which is why I want to learn the system so desperately) but I'm just not getting it. I just tend to learn better if someone can sit in front of me and show me the concepts once. After that, I'm usually pretty good and can extrapolate as needed. As for the artwork, if you're in the same game I'm trying to join, I'll probably offer my services anyway.
  3. I'm a brand new player in the Sacramento, California area. I own Sidekicks and the Hero FREd and I've read both. Unfortunately, I'm not much of a "book learner" and I'm having some real difficulty grasping some of the mathematical concepts outlined in the character generation. Is there anyone with Hero experience in my area willing to meet face-to-face and go over some of the finer details? I don't think it would take too long - maybe an hour or two. I'll even pick up the tab for a meal. Or if you'd prefer, I can do some artwork for YOUR game. (See samples of my work at http://www.dorwaystudios.com/oldsite/artwork.html) Let me know ASAP. I'm trying to get a character generated by the end of the weekend for a PBEM Champions game. Drop me a line at dorwaystudios@gmail.com. (BTW - If anyone is looking for another FtF player, I'm available as well.) Thanks!
  4. Re: PBEM Submissions: NorCal Heroes! I e-mailed you my character - Snowbolt! I know he'll need some work, so drop me a line when you've had a chance to review. Thanks! ~Miked
  5. Re: PBEM Submissions: NorCal Heroes! I'd like to join, but I've never built a character in Hero System before. I just bought the Sidekick intro last week. Would I still be welcome if I can put together a character by the weekend? I've never played a game in Hero before, so I might need a little extra help. If that seems like too much work for the GM, I understand. On a bright note, I live in downtown Sac, so I'm very familiar with the Zigarot building and the surrounding areas. Please let me know at your earliest convenience...If selected, I'll try to get my character in as soon as possible since I'll probably need more feedback than anyone.
  6. Re: Marvel Universe trivia Another "Item of Power" could be Quasar's Quantum Bands. Currently, they're attached to Wendall Vaughn, but perhaps Skull could whack him and take possession of the bands. I remember during Quasar's solo series, he battled the cosmic spidey, so the precedent is already there.
