  1. Re: 'Smells like Teen Spirit'?

Let me see I've got it. You want to combine

Dark Champions: bad **** happens, blood flows, nothing's black&white

    with

Teen Champions: Oh the angst! Oh I'm not popular! Oh my parents suck!

    with

TAS: life's a cartoon, everything's black&white, all problems are solved in half an hour (with a preachy moral at the end)

All that, in one setting?!? Sorry, my mind won't tie itself into knots like that.

  2. Re: Dyson Sphere (shell) - Dysonica Anyone?

However, with a "hollow" spheroid, if the thickness of the shell is constant no matter the radius from the center, the gravitational pull at the surface will be constant as well.

    Nope.

Get your favorite spreadsheet program out and do the following.

In cell A1 put "1000" (without the quotes)

In cell A2 put "=A1+100" (without the quotes)

In cell B1 and B2 put "100" (without the quotes)

in cell C1 put "=((4/3)*PI()*A1^3)-((4/3)*PI()*(A1-B1)^3)" (without the quotes)

Do a "copy down" from C1 to C2

In cell D1 put "=C1/(A1^2)" (without the quotes)

Do a "copy down" from D1 to D2

Do a "copy down" from (A2 thru D2), to oh say row 200.

Look at the results in column D. See how they keep going up? That's the relative surface gravity.

I didn't do this in any particular units, but the math is right. If you want to put it in kilometers, metric tons, Earth gravities, and all that, you can figure out the "fudge factor". I can't be hedgehogged. Important thing is that the surface gravity does keep going up.

  3. Re: A Fun and Creepy Thought

    Wow.

One thought though, even if it had been within the danger range of earth, wouldn't it have only bombarded a little over 1/2 the earths surface in the 33 minute burst?

Would that have sterilized the whole planet? sure, it would have devastated the planet, but a planet is a big place, and life is resilient.

I'd think the Earth's magnetic field (with "help" from the Sun's magnetic field) would bend it around the whole Earth.

Wait: no, not the gamma rays. But the charged particles made when the gamma rays hit atoms in the upper atmosphere would be bent.

And the interaction of gamma rays and atoms all through the atmosphere would heat up the air to the boiling point of water and beyond.

At least, that's my guesstimate.

  4. Re: Moreau Techniques

The premise here is that when we actually found 'settleable' worlds, the earliest colonies failed, as humans simply couldn't thrive in the conditions on these worlds, or at least, they couldn't thrive beyond the goods they took with them.

A second-generation attempt at colonizing these worlds was attempted by a conglomeration of Asian nations who, in our 'future history,' had lead the world in genetic engineering.

They created tailored settlers, using human and various animal DNA to bring forth certain traits considered favorable for the specific worlds in question. The idea was that these settlers would be better able to thrive, and to begin the work of terraforming for future settlers.

Over seventy species were created and sent to space to settle a dozen worlds.

    Very rubbery.

An animal genetically tailored to fit a non-terrestrial environment will not look anything like any terrestrial animal. So your "furry" loving players won't have any of their dubious "fun."

All to the good, IMO. :eg:

  5. Re: WWYCD if their reflection suddenly winked at them?

Me? I'd turn to the player with the "illusion master" character and give her the ol' icy stare, then do ditto to the GM.

My character? See if the reflection does anything else. If not (and even if so, prolly), go to HQ and tell folks the "illusion master" was up to something. When asked what, describe in detail what happened.

  6. Re: Transformer's Spark

Cool ideas' date=' but for the vast majority of the characters I am making, I am just using the normal Superhero Template and making their Vehicle Modes be Shape Shift. The all the powers have disads based on which form they can be used in. How would you do a Spark in this instance?[/quote']

Err... "normal Superhero Template"---which book is that from?

Oh, and I wouldn't do a Spark under such restrictions. Even if it's possible, it's dumb to fight the Hero System's flexibility like that.

Go with the AI + Vehicle idea; it's the best. :)

  7. Re: Costumes in a Real World Game

If lowered inhibitions was all of it, there'd be very, VERY few superheroes. Lots of supervillains, tho.

I think some supers would deliberately dress away from the "standard supers" look, in protest or because they don't want to be expected to act like typical supers. You'd see a lot of supers in biz suits, sweats, jeans&t, etc.

  8. Re: Making colonization attractive?

But the question remains: Why would anybody want to settle in these places?

    "To boldly go..."

    Not just pretty words.

One of the (some say the) greatest driving forces of humanity is the hunger to go, to look, to find out.

Without it, we are IMHO nothing more than bio-robots, clumping our way through the day between birth and death, futile and ridiculous.

  9. Re: Real-world artifact suitable for gaming

An effectively unbeatable encryption method would be to take two' date=' or even three, different texts of exactly the same length and "add together" the values of each letter at every position. If anything less than [b']all[/b] the books were intercepted, deciphering the original would be hopeless, since no single letter would necessarily bear any relation to the next. One could try to guess at the contents of the missing text by filling in "this must be that" letters and forming words, but that assumes the missing text is a legible (sensible subject) book. If all the books are nonsense, the encryption key is the real length of the text.

I'm not sure I got you. You're saying to transmit info in a cipher no-one can break, "add" together two-three different texts. Then nobody who doesn't have all the texts can figure out what the message is.

But if the person you're trying to send the secrret message to doesn't have all the texts, then HE can't figure out the message. And if he does have them, there's no need to send him a message he already has.

Or did you mean something else?

  10. Re: Need some Scandinavian Villains !

Wasn't he hung after the war ?I can't imagine that even a dyed in the wool super villain would name himself "Quisling". It is just too embarassing. (However I can imagine my eight foot tall were polar bear "Snowbear" wanting to give him a great big hug !:eg: )

Hey, you asked for Scandinavian villains!

    :snicker:

  11. Re: Show me the Water Powers

UNTIL Superpowers Database pages 243 through 249.

UNTIL Superpowers Database II pages 121 and 122.

You can go "idea mining" in The Fantasy Hero Grimoire pages 101 through 107.

Has the player thought about including ice powers?

  12. Re: END Expenditure after the Fact

That assumes that the only reason the channeled energy would leave would be that the threat is elimiated' date=' other than, say, a time limit or an accidental change or a need to access a different powerset.[/quote']

In that case I'd give it the -1/4 of Only To Activate. If it's a free choice to stop or not, I'd make it -0.

Problem with Side Effect is SE hits when the power is started. There's no rules re. SE When Turning Off.

  13. Re: Tall Ships, Tall Sails

I want to write up a Flying Dutchman style ship--maybe something like O'Brien's HMS Surprise or a 17th C. pirate ship. I know how to add in the powers and such for the other aspects, but what about base specs?

I can't find info on sailing ships anywhere in either my Champs or Pulp Hero books. Does Ultimate Vehicle have this info or maybe something in FH?

    TUV, p.61 has a Triteme, p.62 has a Viking Longship, p.63 has a Galleon.

    VSb, p.108 has a Brig/Brigantine, p.109 has a Caravel, p.110 has a Carrack, p.111 has a Clipper Ship, p.112 has a Cog and a Curragh, p.113 has a Felucca and a fluyt (misspelled flute) which continues to p.114, p.115-116 has a Frigate, p.116-117 has a Junk, p.116 has a Ketch, p.117 has a Pinnace, p.118 has a Sailing Yacht.

I don't see anything in FH, TurAge, ValAge

Yeah, not all are gonna fit, but I thought I'd give the whole list.

  14. Re: Genres HERO GAMES may want to avoid (intended to be humorous)

Soap Opera Hero season 29: Will Defernder discover his wife's affair with Valerius the Harper? Will Doctor Destroyer hit the Health Clud to prolong his life further? Can Seeker ever find fan support? Find out this' date=' and more on [i']Dice of our Lives[/i].

    What's the Health Clud?

    :sneaky:

    Synabarr HERO.

    'Nuff said.

  15. Re: What to do with your stuff...

Alternately one could always adopt the Conan method' date=' which is to lose, spend, squander, or gamble away all the proceeds from each adventuring session until he was left with nothing but a sword, and perhaps a horse.[/quote']

I prefer the other Conan method.

The one where you become king. :)

No need to worry about where to put your stuff, when your "stuff" is the entire flippin' kingdom. :D:winkgrin::eg::thumbup:

  16. Re: New campaign, new member here...

I have some ideas why a normal would want to help paranormals in such a way--she is risking her life--but they're all kind of trite ("My mommy was a para and they took her away and left me all alone" or "I believe in a greater good" stuff). I'm looking for a new spin on things. Any thoughts?

She knows how to (or only thinks she does) create metahumans. So she wants the restrictions off so she can offer to turn people into metas--for a price, of course.

Or she can turn them into metas who will obey her. That means of course she's as evil as the people she fights. Kinda a surprise for the PC's. :eg: :eg:
