  1. Hey Steve,

I've checked and can't find a clear answer.

    1) If a character can turn Desolid and also has a non-attack power (such as Armor) with the advantage Usable By Others (+1/4) do they also have to purchase Affects Physical World (+2) for the power to be able to have a non-desolid character be granted the power while the initial character is desolid?

    2) If a character grants the above non-attack power to another character and then turns desolid, does the non-attack power turn off or cease to work for the non-desolid character because it doesn't have the Affects Physical World advantage?

    Thanks

  2. Re: X-plain the Rule of X?

A rule of X I've used before for a high powered game was:

    OCV + DCs + Active Defense/5 + Non-dodging DCV + 2*SPD = 60

What that means is a 30 DEX character with 6 SPD and no levels could have about 12D6 attacks and 30 PD/ED with 20 rPD/ED.

If you wanted to lower the 60 to say 50 then you could have a 23 DEX character with 5 SPD and 2 offensive levels and about 12D6 attacks and 20 PD/ED with 10 rPD/rED.

This rule of X worked really well to balance the characters, although one guy did go for a 3 SPD, 15 DEX, 100 STR Brick with no levels (or tricks even) but it was all in good fun. Gave me someone to pound on.

  3. Re: Quote of the Week from my gaming group...

Because getting OUT of that GMs game was the most valuable prize the Player could receive?

Just picked this one to quote because it was the latest... could have easily been any of the others. While I don't necessarily agree with the GMing decision made in that game guys...

From the post it seemed the players didn't mind too much and actually found it (darkly) funny. And lets face it - it makes for a great visual :) Just sayin'.

and to put this thread back...

...ummm, I have no quote :o

    Next?

  4. Re: Champions games you've run

    Hmmm...

The New Peacekeepers: My first attempt at running a game played by my friends. The world and background was rich, but adventures were mostly of the "Lets stop the latest VIPER plot" deal. Quite four colour - light bronze I'd say.

Unnamed Campaign / "Mikey's Game": High powered shenanigans of the iron age variety. Lots of nasty killing attacks and angst. Set in the same universe as Peacekeepers, but a few years later.

Steel City: A short run of adventures with low powered characters in my first attempt at a street level game wherein the heroes try to investigate why a previously weak street gang called the Jackals had suddenly gained access to military level weapons, started a turf war, and seemed to be distributing and selling a super powered berserk-inducing drug called Frenzy. Bronze/Iron in nature I'd guess.

Steel City II: A short run of adventures with low powered characters (some from the previous game) in my second attempt at a street level game wherein the heroes try to track down the source of the super powered berserk-inducing drug called Frenzy. Bronze/Iron in nature.

Project: Olympus: The old gods have returned and chosen sides in the modern Champions universe. Some decide to work for UNTIL. The heroes (initially 250pts) are recruited by UNTIL and beefed up with 'god energy' by Zeus to fight against evil. Very Bronze/Stormwatch influenced.

SHARD: The heroes are recruited into another division of UNTIL (different universe with some echoes of Olympus) to investigate and deal with Strange Happenings - a bit like Hellboy's BRMD but before that time and more superheroic. This one has run on and off over the years and was high powered and a lot of fun.

  5. Re: Magistracy:Origins

Either or is fine, Mike. The math might be off but since I probably won't be using the sheets, I don't see how it matters one way or the other.

The thread is here, and it allows the story thread to remain uncluttered :)

And I like providing feedback because I like noodling with character builds - it'd be great if you made yourself available to explain design choices.

    On with the magic please.

  6. Hi all,

csyphrett has finally started posting character sheets for characters from the Magistracy universe and so as not to clutter up the story threads I thought to put them all in single thread.

  7. Re: I got some players!!!.... But I need some help..

If you have the players start as part of an organisation you could hold back some points, say 25, for gear and give out gear according to the character's weaknesses.

    e.g.

    Not enough offense? 8D6 EB, 16ch, OAF - Pistol - 20pts

Not enough defense? 10 rPD, 10 rED Armour, OIF - Body Armour - 20pts

Relatively well rounded combat-wise, but lacking skills? Spend 20pts on non-combat skills and stuff ("training")

Throw in a radio headset (Radio Listen/Transmit, OIF, Sense affected as Hearing - 5pts) and you are away :)

  8. Re: Let's get Ready To Rumble! (help)

A few suggestions for an arena bash:

    1) No STOP powers, talents, advantages or power frameworks - and you could even go to no Exclamation powers etc too. There is still a wide variety of choices, but some of the things that could break this go away.

    2) No limitations - meaning people can say they have powered armour, but all it is is flavour. And see the above comment about brokenness.

    3) No END - what you want to minimise is book keeping to keep the battle flowing.

    4) Use the "roll less than your speed on a D12" speed determination rather than the speed chart - it mixes things up for the experienced player.

    5) Set an arena size that allows movement, but set an impenetrable barrier around it. I've used a 25" radius sphere as an arena before and it worked fine. Remember to have some ground in case someone wants to tunnel.

    6) I agree with giving folks less points - 350 with only the above limitations should be fine.

First character I ever made with 50 DEX was in an arena bash :D Pretty cheap really.

  9. Re: In the Company of Strangers (story)

I admit this is lame of me, but I've wanted to build a GLA- one trick pony type team for my story page but I had no ideas for names or characters until I hit on the idea of using handles from the hero boards which suggested powers which suggested a plot better than the one I had at the time which suggested links to earlier stories I had written, or later ones that I plan to write down the road.

I'm hoping the result will be cool at the end.

    CES

I've done similar things by imagining which actor would play a character, and taking the one of the onscreen personas of that actor as an initial personality for the character.

So no, it's not lame. Use what you can to get the thing done I say :)

  10. Re: What Have You Watched Recently?

    Excellent choices. ^ v ^

I find myself understanding why Flynn was so popular, in his time. He always plays the charmer with a sense of humor. I'm still trying to puzzle out, though, whether the accent is sexy because it's his, or he's made sexier by having the accent.

It doesn't sound Australian at all, oddly enough. Is there a voice school in Australia for how to sound British or American? Or do some Australian accents sound more British?

The old-school 'proper' Australian accent (the one newsreel narrators used to use etc) was very British-sounding.

And the American accent is copied relatively easily because we get so much American media (film, TV, music).

I'm sure there was a documentary on TV recently about where our accent came from too...
