  1. Has anyone tried using MapForge to create battlemaps for their Hero System games? The app supports hexgrids, and has both Modern Day and Sci-Fi mapping assets available for it (or you can use your own art via drag-and-drop), and there's a selection of content that can work with any genre. Many of the content Add-Ons are free, and there are more on the way (hopefully more Modern Day content, in particular).

Maps made with the app can either be printed, or used in the virtual tabletop software of your choice.

  2. TTS was designed for boardgaming, and it shows, particularly in light of the fact that it doesn't afford a GM the ability to improvise and bring in needed assets on-the-fly. So if you haven't prepped for a particular event (RPG players rarely do exactly what you'd expect), you're screwed.

Why not simply use a VTT expressly made for playing RPGs, preferably one with built-in support for Hero System mechanics?

  3. Battlegrounds (aka BRPG) is another VTT you might want to consider for non-remote gaming. Although it is inherently system-agnostic, BRPG should appeal to Hero System gamers in particular, as Battlegrounds has long supported the system's unique turn sequencing mechanics, Hero System dice, and dice-rolling mechanics such as rolling vs. target numbers, Stun/Body damage, die removal for explosion damage, etc.

Besides maps and tokens, the program also supports visual aids and audio (i.e., sound effects & music).

  4. Re: Is it fun to play RPGs online?

How do you do stuff like movement' date=' though, and miniatures? I just think that playing online ruins the whole experience[/quote']

Try Battlegrounds (see my sig for the link). It has a fullscreen map on which you can move virtual miniatures around. Both square grids and hex grids are supported, and it's easy to measure ranges on the map, even if you choose to play without a visible grid at all (for Hero System, just set the map scale to 2 meters per hex, to ensure accurate measurements).

Battlegrounds also has built-in support for Hero System dice mechanics, such as counting body/stun damage, killing damage, explosion damage, etc., all of which works without any user scripting whatsoever.
