  1. Re: Space drives.

Just use the ship's listed Move as it's maximum acceleration, then work out the distance traveled over time from there.

We take the Merchant Ship as an example. It has a pretty hefty NCM of 240" and a SPD of 3, which gives the vehicle a total of 720"/turn. This translates to an acceleration of 120 m/s^2! That's over 12 Gs! And without any protective inertial compensators! The crew is paste!

Anyway, let's say you want to travel a AU under constant acceleration. That's about 150,000,000,000 meters. Since s = s(0) + v(0)t + at^2/2, and assuming that s(0) and v(0) are zero, then t = (2s/a)^(1/2). Entering the numbers, we get that the Merchant Ship reaches one AU after 50,000 seconds, or just under 14 hours.

But if the crew don't wanna become paste, they use the ship's Combat Movement of 60", which translates to an acceleration of 30 m/s^2. Then the same trip will take 100,000 seconds, or just under 28 hours.

    Thanks - just one thing.

What are the variables in the equation above.

    v = velocity? t = time? a = acceleration? what is s? distance?

  2. Been looking through lots of oldl threads on this topic and found some cool stuff.

For my Space Opera Hero game I want a star drive using instantaneous jumps (ala Mote in God's Eye). I am putting a limitation on jump drives that will not allow them to work within xAU of the central star, depending on type.

What I want is normal space drives that take, depending on how good the astrogation is, anywhere from days to weeks to transit from planet to jump point (and vice versa).

I have looked at the SH sample space ships and cannot get my head around how long trips would take with, say for instance, the merchant ship example.

  3. Re: Is there a Janes Ships of the Terran Empire?

Just about finished the Denoba-class Spice Runner. In Space Opera, ships can move pretty fast. This one clocks along at 45Ly per day max speed. That is something like 16,000Ly/Yr. I was wondering what limitations to put on the engines to keep speed down to a cruising speed of 75% of Max Speed without using considerably more fuel (END).

  4. Re: Is there a Janes Ships of the Terran Empire?

Thanks guys to all your comments and suggestions. What I have been doing is taking ships from the FGU Space Opera setting and converting them. I figure that what they "do" is more important than nuts and bolts. Once I got past that designing ships seems a little easier in Hero.

  5. Re: Is there a Janes Ships of the Terran Empire?

Thanks - I was thinking of getting both those products at some stage.

GUPRS Traveller had a fan produced pdf book called 101 Starships which was totally awesome. I was kind of hoping someone had done something similar for Star Hero, for those of us who are terminally time-strapped.

  6. Re: Training away DCV Penalties from Armor

I let people buy the entire DCV penalty off if they want to so spend their XPs. There is still the END penalty for encumbrance so it is not as if they are wearing nothing (unless they have enchanted armour that negates weight penalties). I figure if Conan can fight in full plate as King of Aquilonia at 60+ years of age, any decent adventurer shoudl eb able to.

  7. Re: Norse Warrior

    Hi

You could do worse to hunt down a book published by ICE "Campaign Classics: Vikings". It has background and Hero related stats and so forth. Old original FH but still useful.

    Cheers

  8. I have begun experimenting with using coloured poker chips to keep track of PC STUN, END and BOD. I hate book keeping and making sure everyone keeps track of these things, END especially, annoys the hell out of me. Anyway, each player gets coloured chips equal to the total of their stats and each turn they toss them into the pot, only taking them back when they take recoveries.

Anyone else doing this or something like it?
