  1. Re: 1-for-1 vehicles cost question

    It costs 151 Points.

Break Down - you are a 350 Point Character.

So the first 350 Points of your Vehicle Perk costs 350/5 = 70 Points.

The next 81 Points of your Vehicle costs 81 Points (1 for 1).

    70 + 81 = 151.

Everything over the Character Points is paid for at a 1-for-1 Basis. Up to that point it is paid four at a 1-for-5 basis, you pay for the Disadvantages as well.

So there is no point in the vehicle having 40 pts of disadvantages?

  2. In standard superhero campaign (200 base +150 dis) if i wanted to buy the vehicle perk and the vehicle total cost adds up to 431 points and the vehicle has 40 disadvantages how much will this perk cost my character? 78 pts? 111? or 143 pts? or 157pts? or something else?

a)431-40/5=78 or b)431-40=391 which is 41 over base so 350/5=70+41=111 or c) vehicle is 81 over 350 basis so 350-40=310/5=62 +81=143 or d) none of the above, you need to ...

    thanks in advance

  3. In standard superhero campaign (200 base +150 dis) if i wanted to buy the vehicle perk and the vehicle total cost adds up to 431 points and the vehicle has 40 disadvantages how much will this perk cost my character? 78 pts? 151 pts? or 157pts? or something else?

  4. Can anyone explain to me why the No Turn Mode advantage is listed as a (-1/4) limitation with the sample mechs on pages 109-111 of The Ultimate Vehicle Guide?

I see nothing in the errata about it and I cant find any postings in the forums explaining why its not a +1/4 Advantage per the normal rules.

  5. Re: Need help with Enhanced Senses and Megascale

On a side note, the spacers tool kit has several hand held PSU's built (pg 20)but they all seem to have an activation role..but I dont see this in their example build. ie. Bio-Scanner: Detect Life 14- (Radio Group), Discriminatory, Analysze, Increased Arc of Perception (360 Degree), Tracking (35 Active Points); OAF (-1), Requires a Systems Operation Roll (-1/2), Affected as Sight and Hearing Group As Well as Radio Group (-1/2) (total cost: 12 points)

where does the 14 or less roll come into the picture? As I read it, you have to make a systems operations roll to use the device, if successful, on a 14 or less you can detect something if there is something to be detected. I dont see in the build how the points add up to 12.

  6. Re: Need help with Enhanced Senses and Megascale

Of course there might be a very specific reason that you want a specifically IR detector, in which case I'll shut up, shall I?

There is a specific purpose for this device, it is to detect the heat energy of approaching spaceships engines (in our campaign there are only three types, nuclear fission, chemical rocket, and ion), I want to track them, and if necessary target them for combat. A side effect of the technology is that it can also detect the radiating heat of rockets, missles, and any other source of extreme heat. This includes stars, nuclear explosions, volcanic activity and even large geysers. The GM has limited my sensor to detect something as small as a nuclear fission engine of a spaceship at 400,000 km which for us is great because our campaign limits radar to 200,000 km so we can double our detection range. The limitation will be that it is easy to fool and even overwhem the sensor. The GM will add that to the build when the time is appropriate.

I can build the device I don't need those kind of suggestions, I just need help with understanding the mechanics of the sense groups.

  7. Re: Need help with Enhanced Senses and Megascale

Don't get hanged up on the Radio Group part...every example of a detect "device" that I have seen in other Hero products (spacers toolkit, star hero, gadets and gear, terrain empire, dark champions, heck even sharper than a serpants tooth, etc.) was built with the radio group, therefore I am following the lemmings and building mine as the radio group.

I also understand that some of you don't like the MegaScale rules, and some of you don't like sardine flavored bubble gum, thats not what I am in need of understanding.

I guess what I am asking for is a better understanding of what sense modifiers apply to which sense group? For example, Sight is Targeting, that is specifically written in the rules, Hearing is 360 and Discriminatory, Smell is 360, Touch is no range, 360, with limited discriminatory. No bones about this, its specifically written in the rules and applicable. Now, is the sight group ranged? Common Sense says 'yes', is it discriminatory? again common sense says 'yes' because if you see two friends, you can usually discriminate which on is Harry and which one is Moe (not worrying about range, contrast, etc. just talking in general here) but its not in the rules, so when do I allow common sense to rule and when do I refer to the rule book? The radio group is 360 with the specific exclusion of radar..but is it ranged?

I simply do not seem to be able to wrap my Hero-Fu around which modifiers are common sense for a Sense, and which ones are adders, they all sortof mush together into a giant toilet bowl of 'Depends'.

what I am building is a Detect Heat Patterns/Traces..now I could have just wrote it up as a Detect Heat Patterns/Traces [5 points], Discriminatory, Analyze, Increased Arc of Perception (360 Degrees, Targeting, Tracking, Passive, etc. etc. but since the book already defines Detect Heat Patterns/ Traces as IR Perception I went with that. Than I made the mistake of putting to much thought into the power and painted myself into a cornor. Since its the Radio group/Radar sense, I muddled the water with wondering do I really need the 360 degree perception, since its part of the radio group, short answer is no, via the Simulated Sense Rule, long answer yes, because I am specifically thinking of the Radar sense of the radio group which is 240, but, radar is targeting, so now I leave 360, but can removed targeting. Is it ranged? Should be, the rules dont say anything about radio or radar being ranged, but common sense says yes, and I think we all agree Common Sense trumps Rules since the Hero System cannot possbile write a specific rule for everything in the universe.

I ramble..time to go outside and play in the sun.

  8. Re: Need help with Enhanced Senses and Megascale

Ok' date=' first of all -- why do you want your infrared sensor to be part of the radio group? Not only does that not make any sense, radar doesn't work well at long ranges in space, at least compared to ordinary infrared detection. Radar is also an active sense, which means enemies can tell you are there more easily.[/quote']

Because its a mechanical sensor that is viewed on a display screen and not a visual sensor.

  9. Re: Need help with Enhanced Senses and Megascale

okay, pretend megascale is not even in the equation than. What about the other questions?

If I want the IR Perception to not be sight based, but part of the radio group, specifically the radar sense, do I still need to buy all the adders (range, targeting, tracking, etc.) not specified under radar? The range and tracking adders really have me stumped as to when to use them and when not to use them. This is the real crux of my problem, not the megascale part.

I understand the simulated sense rule has different default characteristics, ie. sight is targeting, the hearing group is 360 degrees, etc. but none of them seem to have tracking. Why is that? If the sense has targeting, does it also need tracking? Is it possible to target something without tracking it? I just dont seem to understand what the tracking modifier is useful for. The same thing for the ranged modifier, if all the senses in FRED are built as detects, then they all are self only, how does self only apply to senses? How does the radar sense detect objects at a distance if its self only?

  10. Okay, I need some clarifications about senses. I am trying to build a heat sensor with a range of over 400,000 km that can track a target as well as be used to target weapons. I came up with this:

    Heat Sensor.

Infrared Perception (Radio Group), Discriminatory, Analyze, Increased Arc of Perception (360 Degrees), Targeting, Tracking, Passive (35 Active Points); OAF, Bulky (-1 1/2), Affected as Sight as Well As Radio Groups (-1/2) (total cost 12 points); plus MegaScale (10,000 km per Active points, can Be Scaled Down to 1 km per Active point; +1 1/4) (44 Active Points); OAF Bulky (-1 1/2) (total cost: 20 points). Total Cost: 32 points.

    1) I think it has a range of 440,000 km since the naked megascale is 44 active points. Do I use the naked advantage AP or the Powers AP to determine the range? Since the power's AP is 35 it could only have a range of 350,000km.

    2) If I want it to be based on the Radio Group, and specifically the radar sense of the radio group, do I still need to pay points for tracking since radar has tracking as part of the simulated sense group rule? I am assuming I need to buy 360 degree perception since radar is not 360.

3)What about tracking? Radar according to FRED is built as Detect Limited Class of objects (5 points), Targeting (10pts) for 15 points. I cant find anywhere that says the Radio group or the radar sense is tracking..or ranged for that matter. Would I also need to buy ranged since a detect is self only? I guess I am confused over the difference between a ranged sense and self only sense. Can someone help clarifiy the differencs for me?

    4) If I need to buy ranged, assuming standard range rules, would I just than use Megascale as an advantage and not build it as naked?

ie.Infrared Perception (Radio Group), Discriminatory, Analyze, Increased Arc of Perception (360 Degrees), Ranged, Targeting, Tracking, Passive (35 Active Points); MegaScale (1” =10,000 km; +1 1/4), Can Be Scaled Down to 1”=1km (+1/4), etc. etc.

Am I just getting the hodge podge of prebuilt senses confused or am I missing some rules about designing senses and detects somewhere? I dont have 5ER yet and am using FRED till my tax refund comes in and I can get 5ER.

  11. Re: Any suggestions for an intercom?

Intercom with 8 stations for a building:

Clairsentience (Hearing Group), Multiple Perception Points up to 8 at once (35 AP); Usable Simultaneously (up to 8 at once; +1) (70 Active Points); OAF, Immobile (-2), One Sense Only, Normal Hearing (-1/4), Fixed Perception Point (-1). Total Cost 16 points

    also

Mind Link, specific group of up to any 8 minds, No LOS Needed (35 AP); OAF (-1), only Can be Linked with Other Who Have the Mind Link (-1), Does not Provide Mental Awareness (-1/4), Flashed as Hearing Group, not Mental Group. Total Cost 11 points.

Expensive for what it does, but Mind Link is the cheaper route but I like the Clairaudio build better..once you factor in the building equipment /5 its only a difference of 1 point.

    Thanks again for you input.

    Next up...Box of Tissues:

Entangle: OAF, Only works vs Snot, 100 charges per box ...Starwolf

  12. Re: Any suggestions for an intercom?

    Just hand-wave it?

If not, clairaudience, useable by others, area effect, limited to building.

Thanks McCoy, I think we'll go with the clairaudience just to make the GM happy...but

I agree its silly simple because all the team members already have wrist communicators with a 2km range anyways! Why would we even have an intercom system? Sortof like why build a house with phone lines when you've had a cell phone for 8 years now.

..Oh, I guess we need a way to tell the butler to bring us some ice tea while were at the the pool, or maybe even so the pizza boy can buzz the house when he's at the door with our anchovy, pinapple, and green leaf spinach garlic crusted pizza.

  13. Re: Any suggestions for an intercom?

    Thanks

Unfortunately I have one of those GM's that insist that everything needs to be build with character points and since the building is our base everything needs to mimick hero rules.

Heck, we even had to pool our experience points just to build a microwave oven for crying out loud! (Change Environment(Heat up objects placed inside)5 AP; OAF (-1)) But he's pretty generous with the XP so I guess its not so bad.

  14. Anyone have a favorite build for an internal intercom system for a building?

I was thinking of going with the standard Mink Link write up:

Mind Link, specific group of up to any 8 minds, No LOS Needed (35 AP); OAF (-1), only Can be Linked with Other Who Have the Mind Link (-1), Does not Provide Mental Awareness (-1/4), Flashed as Hearing Group, not Mental Group. Total Cost 11 points

than just adjust the points based on how many rooms have access to the intercom ie how many "minds" in the link.

But I also thought that it could be done with less bookkeeping as Clairsentience:

Clairsentience (Hearing Group), Multiple Perception Points (up to 8 at once) (35 AP) One Sense Only (Normal Hearing; -1/4), OAF (-1), Fixed Perception Ponits (-1). Total Cost: 11 points

    Or maybe even use Images?

    Any suggestions?

  15. Re: Help with a video phone/radio

Someone just showed me the terran empire book with its write up of an Orbital Communicator..after seeing it I decided to go with:

HRRP (Radio Group) (12 Active points); OIF Bulky (-1), Affected As Sight And Hearing Group As Well As Radio Group (-1/2) (total cost: 5pts); plus MegaScale (1 billion km per Active Point, can scale down to 1 km per Active Point; +2 3/4) (33 Active Points); OIF Bulky (-1); Lightspeed Delay (-1/2) (total cost: 13 points). Total Cost: 18 points.

My GM pointed out that "technically" there is no range for the HRRP sense...a signal will eventually get to another galaxy but agreed to limit the range to allow for FTL communications later in the campaign. Instead of just sending a signal to the planets surface it can actually go anywhere in the Solar system but with some lag time.

  16. How can I build a video conference Phone/radio? I am trying to make a simple communication system from an orbiting spacestation to the planet below that does both voice and video.

I was thinking something like HRRP(12pts); OAF (Bulkey), Flased as sight , Hearing, and radio grou linked with Megascale (1 hex = 1,000km, scalable to 1 hex-1km)

Is this the simplest and best way to build it?
