  1. Re: Extrasolar planets

Just over the border of frickin nowhere.

... and once they get there, they fire the star's retrorockets until it comes to a stop just far enough away to watch the coming disaster from a safe distance. Having expended a lot of propellant, the star is now considerably lighter, reducing its core pressure and making it last much longer. Or maybe they have enough fuel to fly it back once the danger passes.

  2. Re: Mechanics vs. SFX... Where is the line?

But to advocate on behalf of 'the Devil':

If this is right then would you apply the same logic to LS: Heat against a heat attack? Or LS: Radiation against a radiation attack?

    Heat: No

    Radiation: I don't know.

LS: Disease, Poison, and Aging are just a way to buy off the Disad we all get for being made out of imperfect little protein nanomachines that have known weaknesses that can be exploited. If I don't have a 0-point Vulnerability to cyanide, then no possible concentration of cyanide will interfere with my biochemistry because the mechanism doesn't exist within my body. In my opinion Poison is not a valid sfx for a straight-up RKA or EB.

On the other hand, heat and impact can theoetically be increased to the point where any real-world structure made out of atoms or other particles will be deformed in some way, whether we have the technology to do it or not. You need some type of defensive power to defend against heat or kinetic energy.

  3. Re: Favorite Abuse

If that isn't illegal, it should be. The Folower rules (and all the variations such as Bases, Computers, etc.) already describe something separate from the character, adding Focus is nonsensical. If it's OK to build a wearable computer wristwatch as a Focus, I want OAF Bulky for my vehicle. If a wristwatch is OAF, the Batmobile should be umm Immobile or something.

  4. Re: City of Heroes - Online Hero Game

Yeah it is cool. I have seen pics of it and such. I havent had a chance to figure out how to get there on the villain side. As people are speculating. This might be how you switch from a Villain to a Hero and Vice Versa.

    I'm there now.

Port Oakes: North entrance of the tall brownstone house just east of the arena. Not too far from the difficulty level contact.

Sharkhead: A grungy white panel truck about 100 yds SSE of the natural vendor, quite close to a mission contact.

St. Martial: A manhole by a large transformer under a powerline tower 340 yards NE of the natural vendor.

  5. Re: Restrainable

It's a game balance issue since not every character is equally affected. Birdman purchases +25" flight restrainable for 33 pts. Speed Demon purchases +25" Running for 50 pts because he uses his legs. However Gleep uses his tail to help him run fast and purchases +25" running restrainable for 33 pts.

All of them seem roughly equally vulnerable to grabs and especially entangles, but only one of them don't get point savings.

After reading this thread, I'd be inclined to give a -1/4 for Restrainable on movements for stuff like wings and tails.

I think the difference is in how easy the Powers are to completely disable with a Grab, Entangle, or the like.

Birdman needs to maintain aerodynamic trim; any interference with his wings means he can't get airborne at all, even to hover.

Gleep's tail might be slender and flexible and easy to interfere with, although I kind of wonder if he's just trying for some free points.

Speed Demon can be hobbled or grappled, and he might stay upright or even struggle forward at a reduced rate. Hopping, if he has to, or dragging Gleep behind him.

  6. Re: IK Hero?

Every time I see this topic I wonder what the heck an Inverse Kinematics Hero would be. Maybe he's kind of like Matt Keller in Niven's A Gift from Earth, telekinetically adjusting your body language, and thereby changing your emotional state through a sort of nonverbal communication/subtle feedback thingy.

  7. Re: Worst comic book superfight ever

Re Superman and Power Defense: I believe Superman has very little PowD for a super. He seems to be susceptible to "strange" drain rays and so on, from my memory of even Silver Age Superman. It seems many of Luthor's more esoteric attacks, in any of the older comics back when I was reading them, tended to affect Superman to one degree or another of serious magnitude.

Which, in HERO terms, is probably the best explanation, really. His PD/ED isn't a problem versus magic that manifests as pure physical force, but anything that's against PowDef he's a bit nerfed on compared to many other supers (who, of course, lack his many other super-abilities).

The Mort Weisinger Superman had the same Power Defense as he had PD and ED, namely virtually infinite. It's just that his Power Defense was Not vs. Magic. I'd call him the Silver Age Superman.

Julius Schwartz scaled his PD and ED back to merely ridiculous, and removed the Power Defense against all but the most mundane effects. I consider that Superman (ca. 1971-1980) to be Bronze Age. He's also the guy that got me into superhero comics, for what it's worth.

  8. Re: Golden Age Day Jobs

Black Canary owned a flower shop in the Golden Age too. I remember reading a reprint in Detective back in the 70s, but I don't recall many details. I do remember she was Dinah Drake, though, and dating Larry Lance (who was a detective)

  9. Re: City of Heroes - Online Hero Game

I got way too many alts at this point' date=' but if you need a flunky to get that 20000 prestige let me know.[/quote']

Me too. I don't have room on Champion to make a member of Eurostar. But if you need a martial artist/assassin to take Scorpia's place, my mutant cat burglar/cloak-and-dagger guy One Man Crime Wave is available.

  10. Re: Worst comic book superfight ever

No' date=' I think you've got it way too early. I'm dead certain he first pops the claws with no costume in the Hellfire Club arc.[/quote']

First time I saw it was in the Savage Land arc, after they wscaped from Magneto's volcano lair.

  11. Re: Batman's Origin Story

    The true origin of Batman:

Batman leaves a message on his computer saying that Spoiler should immediately steal Metron's travel chair. After Spoiler reads the message and leaves, Batman alters the message to read that Spoiler should in fact not attempt such a thing because it's really pointless and stupid, giving him evidence to use to mock her later.

Spoiler succeeds, so Batman uses the travel chair to travel into the past. He disguises himself as Joe Chill and murders Thomas and Martha Wayne, assuring Batman his place as Dark Avenger of the Night.

  12. Re: City of Heroes - Online Hero Game

Is the radius of effect large enough to be worth it for a front-line fighter?

Yes, in my opinion the radius is fine for a front-line fighter. My pirate robot ninja-master has no problem hanging back and aiding his ninjas with Leadership, so I see no reason it shouldn't work the other way.

Are the buffs worth the slots?

    Dunno.

Would it stack if someone else also had Leadership?

Yes, I'm pretty sure it does.

  13. Re: Teleport catcher

I like this thought' date=' but (you knew it was coming) would this stop someone from teleporting to a location paid for with the teleport power, since they don't have to "see" either of these areas. Maybe mental illusions would have to be used here along with a fixed location, UAA! Would you need UAA? If you had a fixed location in your teleport, I might let you substitute it for someone elses with mental illusions...[/quote']I think you could combine that idea with some way of preventing teleportation to anywhere but the 'catcher.' If there's a teleport-proof barrier around everything else the teleporter will have to teleport there, or not at all. The teleporter would have the opportunity to realize something's amiss when his floating location stops working, but I think that's a feature.

You set up a teleportation barrier, then cover the entire area with the illusion that the 'catcher' is actually the region you want to protect. When someone tries to teleport, either they end up in the 'catcher' or they fail, and maybe try to retarget and again end up in the 'catcher.'
