  1. Re: VILLAINS, VANDALS, AND VERMIN -- What Would *You* Like To See?

I'd like to see a female master villain (Mistress Villainess???) with real depth and character who is a both a schemer and a physical threat like Dr Destroyer. One who isn't aloof from the world and the PC's like Istvatha V'han and isn't a spoilt girl with superpowers cliche like Gravitar. A woman with power, drive and ambition who isn't a one dimensional personality straight from the adolescent schoolboy's clichebook.

    One who might say:

"When the major newstory of today is how difficult it is for the modern woman to juggle the demands of work, family and a social life I consider it my moral obligation to conquer this nation of corrupt fools! When I can manipulate world governments, juggle a thousand plots and still find the time to destroy this band of taudry superheroes I am doing you a favour you should all be grateful for!

    Instead of:

"I had nothing to wear so I thought I'd do a quick smash and grab shopping trip down Rodeo Drive!"

It reminds me of a GURPS character in one of the supplements I read. I forgot her name but she was a mad scientist who looked like June Cleaver. She would build a death-ray in one hand and bake cookies with the other. That in itself would be an interesting writeup. :D

    My mom, the supervillian

  2. Re: THE ULTIMATE MENTALIST -- What Do *You* Want To See?

Expand on clairsentience and what it can/cannot do.

Maybe some new adders (or advantages) to do things like speed up or slow down what you're seeing if you're viewing the past or the future (i.e. like a movie projector or a vcr).

An deeper explanation of precognition/retrocognition. How accurate you can view the past/future.

The viewing of multiple timelines (probably handled with the transdimensional advantage but is there a different way) or the possible interaction of them.

    Just my thoughts :)

  3. Re: Fun Character concepts

You may want to watch The TICK cartoon for some more ideas. They had Plunger Man, Captain Mucilage, The Decency Squad, etc... on the heroes side and The Deadly Bulb, Proto Clown, Chairface Chippendale, etc... on the villians side. If you've never seen it, the cartoon is still playing on a channel called JETIX which is part of the Disney Channel. You may want to buy the DVD of the cartoon which will be out the 29th of next month :)

    Enjoy!

  4. Re: Countering the Speed Zone

Is someone coming to your house, holding a gun to your head, and forcing you to allow it in your game...?

Point taken but at the same time some GM's will probably be ignorant about it, allow it without realizing the repurcussions and start pulling their hair out with a game breaking power like this

I'm just looking for a viable defense for the Speed Zone other than outright banning it. I know some players will look at this power, drool with anticipation and want to start using the this ASAP to some major head busting.

I hope this thread can shed some light on a good defense for a major offense :D

    Just my $.02

  5. Tell me about your characters DNPC.

My character has one called Henry who is the janitor of our base. He looks like Sam Elliott w/ a big white overgrown mustache who mumbles alot about "51" and "Rosewell" and "Project #@*&^%("

One of our other PC's tried to read his mind and came up with incomprehensible mathematic formulas and scenes from old B&W TV shows :D

  6. Outside of banning it, is there any other way of preventing it from ruining the game.

The only way I can think of off-hand is to have another opponent that also has access to the speed zone.

I just thought we should put our thinking caps on and try to whittle this this monster down to size. :doi::ugly:

  7. Re: Thoughts on the Speed Zone

I'm really surprised Steve Long hasn't jumped in on this issue yet. He could really clear up alot of things. It sounds like it's no fun at all to play the game (or for that matter play anything but a speedster) if you allow the speed zone and it's "BOOM" you squash the enemy and win the campaign. :(

I could be reading alot more into this than I am but this issue is a bit disturbing.

  8. Re: Character: The Accelerated Man

Nice writeup, though I haven't had a chance to read the UPS (started a new job) so I'll dig into the rules later, particularly the speed zone rules.

I have a feeling the speed zone is going to be controversial for quite some time. Some will say it will be the greatest thing since slice bread and resolve alot of problems while others will say WTF!!!!!!!!! :jawdrop: (most likely the GM's) and wonder what sick person came up with this idea. :D

That sounds like a certain villian from a Wild Wild West episode, you didn't "borrow" from that did you? :D

  9. Re: Thoughts on the Speed Zone

    Thanks KS!

It all comes down GM control. I was just looking for viable controls to prevent abuse like you mentioned earlier.

I know someone who didn't end up reading the rules right is going to try to make super "I-can-enter-the-zone-gut-Doctor-Destroyer-like-a-fish-and-get-out-with-my-***-intact" speedster. That's the abuse I'm thinking about.

Better yet, enter the zone, dress Doc D like a clown and disappear before he knows what happened. :D

  10. Re: Thoughts on the Speed Zone

If I'm reading you correctly sounds like it should be banned outright. Or the other alternative you mentioned:

Im thinking about implementing the Speed Zone as written but with out the ability to make attacks on people not in Speed Zone; or perhaps to make no more than one attack per foray into the zone.

Doesn't that kind of defeat the whole purpose of what it was mean't for? Isn't there an alternative to what you have mentioned above without diluting it.

-How about a speedster villian with same powers?

-Maybe something lurks in the speed force that's a danger to anybody inside it?

Sorry for the rant just wanted the alternatives out there. :)

  11. Re: Speed Force, too unbalanced?

I didn't mean to cause a ruckus here (and I hope I didn't) and you're probably right. Any power can be abused as written if the GM allows to be.

I just had a feeling that with the mention of the speed force would garner a reaction that many would say it's just too powerful for my game. On the other hand some would say this was badly needed and would answer alot of questions as to how to set something up like this.

Like I said before, sorry if I reacted to quickly but I just wanted some early reaction.

Oh yeah, if you guys are big into the Wild, Wild West televison series (Season One on DVD now), you may want to check out an episode The Night of the Burning Diamond. The villian burns diamonds down to liquid form to accelerate his body at hyperspeed (he's also invisible) but the side effect is that simple chemicals (i.e alcohol) can burn him up.

    Thanks :)

  12. Re: Thoughts on the Speed Zone

Is there anyway of allowing the speed force (without changing it as written) and not let it become the all-powerful power it seems to be?

I mean, like I said before, you may be able to hit your opponent alot eaiser, but you still may not be able to get through his opponents defenses.

    That's my $.02 anyway.

  13. Re: Thoughts on the Speed Zone

what exactly does the speed zone do? i don't have the book but i'd love to hear more about this

I think they want you to buy the book to find out :P

Picked up the Ultimate Speedster Sunday evening and read thru it.

It is all around an excellent supplement, and perhaps the most significant thing in the book is the Speed Zone.

My first impression was...well...slightly unprintable. It is such an overpowering ability that its nearly impossible for me to imagine ways to reliably keep people using it from being unstoppable.

On the other hand it is a really cool ability and does allow various speedster abilities from the source material to be modelled which would otherwise be prohibitively expensive or basically not possible.

I went thru some old characters and made updated versions of a few speedsters with the Speed Zone abilities and unsurprisingly they are every bit as overpowered as I thought they would be.

Thinking thru the situation, it all boiled down to this for me...I don't have a problem with the capabilities of the characters while in the Speed Zone EXCEPT for the ability to attack everyone else while they are at 0 DCV and unable to react.

Im thinking about implementing the Speed Zone as written but with out the ability to make attacks on people not in Speed Zone; or perhaps to make no more than one attack per foray into the zone.

Im also intrigued by the possibilities of the Speed Zone as a practical model for other abilities. The one that comes to mind most strongly is a Professor X style Astral Zone where two mentalists could duke it out in their minds at the speed of thought. Similarly it might make a good model for Cyberspace where things resolve at the speed of microprocessors. And so on.

Anyone else have any thoughts about the Speed Zone one way or another?

Check out this thread for ways to stop a speedster:

    http://www.herogames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=45814

Oh, and by the way just because the guy is DCV 0 (like say a brick) doesn't mean he'll get through his defenses

Boxcar: Me squash you like bug *Grunt*

Zoom Man: "I speed up into the speed zone and hit Boxcar multiple times"

GM: Okay he's DCV 0. But he has a 30 PD/30 ED hardend and a Damage Shield so you take part of the damage" :)

Or something like that anyway, I thnk you get the point :)

    Zoom man: OWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. Re: Friends, 1934

Well, I ran the Pulp Friends game at Bencon last weekend! Had a blast: drew two sold-out tables and had a bunch of requests for more, so I may have to write a sequel for Tacticon. I'll try and post some kind of after-action report as well as update the character write-ups, which I tweaked a bit. But in the meantime, I put a few of my favorite lines up on the quotes board:

Instead of a sequel to Pulp Friends, why not start a Pulp Seinfeld game! :D

It would be an interesting take to see writeups on Jerry, Elaine, George and Kramer.

...and oh yeah, Newman too ;)
