  2. Re: Cryptic to develop Neverwinter Nights MMO?

I stand corrected. LotR does have respectable numbers.

I SERIOUSLY disagree here having had some time to play it. Running through a dungeon smashing barrels is not my idea of D&D. Let's not forget the fact that it's now free and relying on Micro-Transactions to stay alive speaks volumes.

There are reason very good reasons I'm biased against Turbine, but you're right, we'll never know who's really at fault.

Its not really free its a hybrid and many of the new people trying the slightly limited free to play option are switching to subs to buy off those restricitions and many players such as myself are still subscribing and have been for over three years, yeah the microtransations are helping turbine out but they set those up in such a manner to encourage people to sub rather then do microtransactions.

    "

And that's not to say I 'hate' DDO. It's a fantastic game, it's the most accurate D&D pnp ruleset to MMO to date. The problem is the people behind it, not the game itself."

You are right, DDO did a good job on turning the pnp ruleset into a game. Sadly, they went with Eberron which ran me off. I would have settled for any of the earlier properties... but oh well.

Cryptic failed to turn the HERO game system into a workable Champions MMO at least using the pnp ruleset. I now am seriously concerned about them flubbing STO

Yes I am hugely disapointed with their champions game didnt feel like playing champs even mildy to me so even though I was looking forward to STO I will not preorder it for sure.

  4. Re: Cryptic to develop Neverwinter Nights MMO?

I think the main problem with DDO was that they used the Eberron setting which is not a bad setting but I believe that Forgotten Realms is a much more widely played setting. At least it is with my group' date=' when we aren't playing Fantasy HERO. Thus I believe that while it may not have saved the game it might have attracted more players if it was set in the Realms. At least that's what I like to think.[/quote']

I hate the realms and wouldnt have played if it had been there, and to tell the truth I think it would have been a mistake as they couldnt have made all the Realms fans happy and they would have been told constanly that they got this or that wrong. I love Eberron myself but would have been happier maybe if they game on been set in a new world or maybe Kalamar, Greyhawk or Blackmoor

  5. Re: Cryptic to develop Neverwinter Nights MMO?

Yep, seems I've been wrong about Turbine.

Seems like Atari really gets off on abusing the companies it works with. Which should go a loooong way to explaining why Atari bought Cryptic Studio's outright. They can kick them around now and not worry about being sued?

Talk about Atari having it out for DDO to fail because they were interested in pushing out their NWNO MMO. Ugh, the thread explains quite a bit. =(

I have to applogize I didnt read this before I chastised you in my other post. so sorry:(

  6. Re: Cryptic to develop Neverwinter Nights MMO?

I do know that DDO has or is (I'm not sure of their timetable) going free to play. fyi.

Actually they are a hybrid of free to play and subs. Free to play has some limits on what they can access(can buy more through microtransaction) number of character slots and a little restircted on races and classes as well as limits on auction house and tells, and no shared bank, they can buy all of these off either with cash or earned game points(would take a long time to buy off all for free) while subscription players have no limits on tells and more character slots. I would recomend any who hasnt played to at least check out the free to play option.

  7. Re: Cryptic to develop Neverwinter Nights MMO?

Maybe if Turbine got off it's ass and didn't cack up DDO so badly from the start they wouldn't need to sue some other company for trying to put out a D&D MMO to replace the utter failure that is Turbine.

And that's not to say I 'hate' DDO. It's a fantastic game, it's the most accurate D&D pnp ruleset to MMO to date. The problem is the people behind it, not the game itself.

It suffered from what the MMO community likes to now call FATAL Star Wars Galaxies Syndrome.

You need to get some of your facts straight one the big problems with ddo was Atari didnt promote or market it like they should most likely it seems now that they were planning on coming out with their own game and didnt want to boost a competing game and its one of the reasons turbine is suing them.

  8. Re: Top 5 Favorite 5E Supplements

Hmm only one I still have is the Ultimate martial artist I did like that book. still a bigger fan of 4th editon and if I can ever replace my lost book I will run champs again my fave supplement from that was the 4th edtion VIPER book always liked Scott Bennie's work and enjoyed playing with Cliff in the past, but my fave stuff always by scott b and scott h. No offense Steve. Wasnt a fan of 5th edtion as it seem the point scaling seem to rise abit from 4th.

  9. Re: And the old shall swallow the new...

From a commerical standpoint, Stormreach was an abject failure. When I tried my demo a year and a half ago, there were only five players on any of the servers at any given time. What's the point of an MMORPG that very few people play?

Why did Stormreach fail? Direct competition with WoW where WoW had all the advantages.

Not a huge comercial success no but I have been playing for over 3 years and I have never ever seen it at 5 players on any server at any time. I dont think I have ever seen less then 100 players on any server at any time of course none of them maybe running something that I want but at least just running around in ddo is more fun the playing a raid or quest in wow.

I dont have high hopes for CO for one reason its not really champions to me its not using champions rules just set in the universie although I do like that world though, I hope it surprises me and is good but I am afraid that for good champs play the only way is to sit down and play with rl people.

  10. Re: And the old shall swallow the new...

IIRC' date=' Atari has had some successful products lately, most notably for our purposes the long-running [i']Neverwinter Nights[/i] line. They haven't had a lot of success with MMORPGs, though; Dungeons & Dragons Online Stormwatch was a disaster of epic proportions. They've had a long-standing connection to Wizards of the Coast, and have overall made money from the endeavor.

That said, they are an independent company (no Hasbro ownership) and have a solid record of transposing RPG mechanics to computerized formats.

The name may still be linked to the first videogame boom and bust, and to a doomed line of microcomputers (they made the first computer I almost bought back in 1988 -- I chose the imported PC-compatible Amstrad instead, and they ended up losing out to PCs ion the marketplace), but Atari does have a good understanding of the market and a decent capital base. Barring catastrophe, this should work out.

Completely and utterly false game is great and closer to dnd then what CO will be to true champions, CO might be a good game but it will really only be champions in name at least ddo is 60-80% 3.5 dnd.

Please note the changes from 4th Edition to 5th Edition HERO System are primarily refinements. Many HERO Fan Pages are still 4th Edition, but many have added 5th Edition changes. Essentially clearer, cleaner, and classier. Lord Liaden asked a few good questions. What are you looking for... precisely?

    Thanks

  12. Re: 4th edition support

Okay, Kisska, I think I can provide you with some useful free Internet stuff. :)

To start with, this forum thread has links to several adventures written for Fourth Edition, most (but not all) of them based on characters and groups appearing in 4E or earlier Champions books, but easy enough to adapt: http://www.herogames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=36759

This is an archive of postings to the grand old Red October BBS, once the hub of the HERO online community. There's a host of diverse 4E material there: characters, campaign settings, house rules, book errata and updates, and much other goodness. http://www.mactyre.net/october/Files.html

Here are Fourth Edition expansions to the classic Champions villain group Terror Inc., posted to the forums by their creator Steve Perrin: http://www.herogames.com/forums/showthread.php?p=177839

These Attached files are Fourth Edition HERO stats for all the characters from the Champions: New Millennium line of sourcebooks, originally using the Fuzion game system: http://www.herogames.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1127464

All of the websites below host numerous write-ups for well-known superhero comic and other characters, mostly for 4E HERO:

    http://www.sysabend.org/champions/gnborh/

    http://www.mactyre.net/scm/deejay/champs/writeups.html

    http://x-men.the-wild-hunt.org/

    http://www.angelfire.com/scifi2/mathew/champions.html

(NOTE: the links on the webpage above are sometimes cranky and may take you to the author's homepage instead. Just go Back and try the link again.)

Finally, should you actually be interested in using some of the published Fifth Edition material, this webpage summarizes the changes from Fourth to Fifth Edition, with interesting commentary thereon. Although it's not complete enough to replace the 5E rulebook (deliberately so), it will allow you to recognize anything you see in the newer books: http://theemerged.blogspot.com/HERO425.htm

Thanks so much this should be a big help and I remember the red october board didnt have internet access for it but my brother-inlaw at the time did and he would put all that he thought I would be interested in on disk so I could access it later, sadly all the info was on my amiga's hard drive when it died. No there isnt to much in 5E I care for I like the 4th ed viper book better then the newer one for example but keeping my eye on things here to see if 6th is going to be good for what I want but as things stand I will proably stick with 4th but not saying 100% yet.

  13. Re: 4th edition support
