1. Re: The October Eight competition

General Bones

Once upon a time, Richard Bones was an actual brigadier general in the United States Army. A scandal just before the Civil War kept him out of action.

This scandal centered around his alleged involvement in a satanic cult. Though he denied the charges, they were quite true.

Besides being a military leader, General Bones was a master necromancer, taking the phrase "army of the undead" quite literally. His magic was so powerful that, in the end, he was able to animate his own corpse and become what has since been termed a lich.

On the whole, he looks like an animated skeleton, still with a few bits of flesh hanging on, with glowing red eyes, wearing a military uniform with four general's stars and copious decorations (he always was prone to hubris). He periodically updates his outfit to match the military style of the day; he last did this in the mid-1980s.

Nor does he rely entirely on magic; part of his operation is through gun-running, and he keeps a sizeable share of the hardware he moves, including the Desert Eagle he keeps by his side.

I'm going to resubmit a character concept I had for last year's November Nine, just in case it tweaks Jonathan's fancy this year... General William James Boddy is an American Civil War Undead Confederate General, with an army of the dead at his beck and call... :eg:

Background/History: William James Boddy was born to a well-to-do family in Tennessee. He attended The US Military Academy at West Point and graduated with honors. However, many of his professors were concerned with his lack of ethics – he believed in victory over all, no matter what it cost or how it was achieved. When the Civil War broke out, he was made a General over the forces of Tennessee. Despite his tactical brilliance, his army did not do well in its earliest battles. Desperate, General Boddy turned to the works of ancient generals, trying to learn their secrets. He found an ancient book of black sorcery and learning all he could from it, he set about to change the course of the war.

From that point on, Boddy's fortunes changed. He won battle after battle, driving the forces of the Union before him on his march northward. He cut through Kentucky (enraging the previously-neutral state and prompting them to side with the Union), then moved north into Indiana, burning towns and crops as he went. He raided Indianapolis and set the capital building afire before turning eastwards, towards Ohio. He put fear into the hearts of his enemies, who spread tales of the dead marching; of soldiers who could not be killed by bullets, of torture, rape; and unholy human sacrifice.

Quote: "Ah've fought mah way through two states and a half-dozen armies, and y'all think y'all got it in you to stop me?"

Appearance: General Boddy is hideous to look upon. His wrinkled, leathery skin is pulled tight over his bones. His silver hair hangs in clumps from his head. His bloodshot eyes bulge slightly from their sockets. Most disturbingly, he smells faintly of rotting meat. The more Chaos infects his soul, the more he resembles a walking corpse. Despite that, he still seems to take great pride in his appearance because his Confederate Gray uniform is always spotlessly clean and smartly pressed. He wears a cavalry saber and a six-shooter at his hip, and a wide-brimmed hat to keep the sun out of his eyes.

I'm posting this to get Bob and Bill's opinions. I never post stuff at this stage - it's my roughest sketch of the idea, well before it gets any polish, so please view it as such, but I thought it may be fun to combine both of your characters in on one big ol' fight scene. Let me know if you're violently opposed to the idea - or indeen if you have any other thoughts!

ROUGH!

2. Re: The October Eight: Artwork

Thanks for the kind words everyone!

This is the final colour version of The Foo's Ms. Belladonna, I hope you like her Mark!

Original submission details here: http://forums.champions-online.com/showthread.php?t=114696

Please remember, closing date for submissions is not until the end of September, and the submissions thread is here: http://www.herogames.com/forums/showthread.php/81640-The-October-Eight-competition

3. The October Eight

This year, being busier for me than at the same time last year, the actual drawing and painting of the October Eight winners will take place throughout this month and the next. The competition is not closed! Applications are still accepted (in this thread here: http://www.herogames.com/forums/showthread.php/81640-The-October-Eight-competition ) until the end of September. By doing it this way, I will perhaps be able to do more than Eight pieces.

What I'll be doing is posting the black and white artwork, then after a period of a few days where the character's creator can get in touch with any suggestions / requests / moans I'll start on the colouring. This will hopefully mean that the 'winners' will be able to get a piece they really like.

I have disqualified myself as I pay formy commissions and many of you have seen what I have asked and paid for.

No need to disqualify yourself. It's an open call!

I wasn't sure how corny you wanted him to be. (I mean' date=' he's an iron age typewriter-themed villain.) Will he be all Leifield? With lots of pouches and stuff?[/quote']

No Liefield here!

Wow' date=' this is very generous of you. I peeked at your Deviant Art account and your stuff is way cool. Gotta pick a character to submit...[/quote']

I second that sentiment - this is a most generous offer you've put on the table for us.

Ta, but it's tradition now :)

This year I'll be colouring in Photoshop, rather than the fancy-dan paint program I usually use -- here's a wee sample of the slyle:

5. Last year I ran a little competition for folks to get a character painting, and now a year has passed, I thought I'd do it once again, if there's the interest.

For last year's November Nine, all that was required was for people to reply to this thread with character write ups and description and or screenshot. Nine of those were then chosen and painted up. The only difference this year is that as I'll be doing the drawings in October, there will be fewer drawings, hence The October Eight!

Last year's bunch were a varied lot and so, if you're interested, please reply to this thread with as many character details as you can, and good luck!

ps; If anyone has a link to the very first incarnation of Bulldozer, could you let me know :)

6. Re: in the spirit of christmas!

I take it the Savage 95 has been adapted to take the .250-3000 cartridge' date=' since the first rifle specifically designed for it was the Savage 99?[/quote']

...errr... probably :) I just do the colouring in :P

7. Re: in the spirit of christmas!

Not a shy girl is she? :D I love her tattoos' date=' but [i']what is that cavalry sabre doing there?

Well, from her character description: "Weapons and Gear/Equipment: A Savage 95 bored for the 250-3000, cut down like a carbine with a quick release stock. It's lever gun with a rotary magazine, rather than a tube or box, small enough to hide under a coat, and "quick enough to catch a wolf on the run". Primarily worn across her back in a large map case.

A Kahr 40 compact semi-automatic pistol. A heavily modified Mauser c96. Affectionately called her "Han Solo gun", Kim restructured the Shansi Type 17 variant on the C96 to fire 410 bore shotgun shells instead of its original 45 auto colt round. She carries a 2 foot long boarding cutlass at her hip, with a single bar guard in place of the usual bell. Lastly, she usually has several ceramic daggers, of her own design, on her person. The blades are pressed out of a hybrid zirconia compound that utilized silver dust. the 'alloy' makes the blades brittle, but they hold a razor edge and dont set off traditional metal detectors."

I thought just showing the cutlass was probably enough, after all, the poor lass has just gotten up.

8. Re: Champions Online deviantArt group

I tried to join' date=' but it said that it was closed, so I had to set a watch instead.[/quote']

That was due to my stupidity in not reading a box correctly... It's re-set now, and I've sent you an invitation anyway (and to cptpatriot)

9. Re: in the spirit of christmas!

This is just a Work-in-Progress. I don't really do too many supers now, and I thought I should get back into practice. As part of that, I've started a sketch of the Champions character Sapphire. Me being me, and the character being a bit of a fashionista, I have fiddled with the outfit slightly. Colours (and more detailed inking) to come.

Sapphire is © Cryptic Studios, Inc

After a lot of back and forth, and re-drawing, here's a (very) small version of page one of Huginn & Muninn, written by Ian Struckhoff, drawn and painted by me. A much, much bigger version is on my deviantArt page. Comments and crits are very welcome!

11. Re: in the spirit of christmas!

Ooooh' date=' I like these last pics, especially the first black and white one. Let's see. . . Yggdrassil? check. Hugin and Munin? Check. Odin of the One Eye? Check. Awesome. And then you go the other way and tease us with images of that pole dancer/ However, I think it all ties in, especially since you have the office building with "FENRIS" on it, and the one-eyed young woman (who looks like she's only wearing a hoodie). I also like the pic of your sister and brother-in-law and the one of Thor's Assassin dying in the rain. Very atmospheric.[/quote']

Thanks DB! The strip is set in two worlds, and you hit a bull on what two it is!

Lovely work, Doc, as always! That redhead's eyes are gorgeous, just stunning. You know who else did eyes like that? Jon J. Muth -- and that's a high compliment. :applause:

And, let me take a moment to pimp some of the Dr.'s other work -- he's got several illustrations in the upcoming Hero System Martial Arts book!

Heck, that is a high compliment! Thanks vey much!

12. Re: Comic Writers and Artist: The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly!

Writer Good: Alan Moore. It's become sort of fashionable to knock Moore, but his appearance on the US comics scene re-vitalised how people looked at comics - both inside and outside the industry. Brilliantly imaginative, astonishingly tight scripts and a very dark sense of humour mark Moore out as the first and best artist to write in the comics medium.

Writer Bad: The likes of Dan Slott, Marc Guggenheim, Bob Zale and Zeb Wells. Hacks who show no care or consideration for characters who have been developed over 40 years, and wipe them away for the sake of cheap shot short-term sales.

Writer Ugly: Frank Miller. I loved his stuff early on, but he became a parody of himself. Dark Knight Strikes Again was appauling.

Artist Good; Alan Davis. I love Matt Wagner. The forgotten man Steve Rude. Kirby. Ditko. Barry Windsor-Smith. Frank Bellamy and many more, but Davis can draw anything. In tiny panels. Brilliantly.

Artist Bad: Liefield. 'nuff said.

Artist Ugly: Jim Lee. urg. Dreadful anatomy. I know everyone loves him, but I just can't stand what he does.

13. Re: A proposal

Something you may want to be careful of' date=' read the EULA. I know in Everquest II the EULA says (or used to anyway) says that SOE owns all characters that are created on their servers, including player made characters. Even these Hero Games boards say (if I remember correctly) they own whatever is put down here. I would put up a post, PM, or email making sure no one has a problem with it.[/quote']

How it tends to work is that the company owns the character within the game, as generated by the game engine.

Were I using Champions canon characters, or aiming to directly or indirectly generate income of any kind, I'd be concerned, but I'm not using Champions characters or looking to make cash in any way, so I'm pretty much in the clear.

14. Re: Need Super powered Mysteries!

A locked door mystery

A famous Power Armour hero is found standing stock still in the middle of a deserted warehouse. The armour is sealed tight, and there is no response to ant communication attempts. Is the suit wearer inside? Alive, dead or incapacitated? Is the suit's owner inside, or a thief?

15. Re: A proposal

Thanks to everyone who has replied and/or offered their help, it's greatly appreciated :)

It seems there may be enough interest to take this idea further, so I thought I'd put out a few details.

I will not be starting this until January. Not only do I have a giant turkey to eat this month, but I'm also rather jammed up with commissions.

• Submissions may range from character name, screenshot and bio/background all the way to a full script.
• Don't bother sending anything that copies an existing character. I don't want to get sued, so won't consider it!
• Without any response from Cryptic, no canon characters will be used, nor will MC be referred to directly.
• Each monthly 'episode' will range from 1 to 3 pages, no more. This will call for very tight scripting!
• Artwork will be mine, but your characters will remain yours and be credited as such. This will be a strictly web-based non-profit publication.
• Submissions sent only to the email address listed below. My PM box here is full enough as it is with spam from Socrates.
• Collaborators get full consultation on each stage of the creation process.
• Once we're into the series, then other artists are more than welcome to do a strip or two themselves!

The submissions email address is: doctordestiny@hotmail.co.uk

Although the main thrust of the series is Westside, it's a guideline not a rule.

At present, I intend to host it over on ComicSpace, unless anyone else has a better idea. Please remember that although this is my idea, the whole point of it is to foster more community involvment... *adds cheese* Westside Stories is Your Story... *cheese off* :P

Thoughts, opinions, flame welcome :)

16. Hi everyone, I'm posting this here to guage interest.

In the new year, I'm considering producing a web-comic called 'Westside Stories'. Each monthly 'edition' would feature a different lead character and story, and be short - 2-3 pages only. Whilst the first couple would feature my own characters, the idea would be for players to suggest their own characters and stories to spotlight. The only prerequisite would be that the stories be set in the down and dirty Westside area of Millenium City, and barring permission from Cryptic, not include any official characters.

To give you the idea, an sample strip would be something like this:

Page One (Page one)

Page Two (Page two)

The idea behind the strip would simply be to flesh out an underused area of the city, and to help foster a community sense of belonging. I've no desire to write the whole of it myself, or to use only my characters - that'd be boring for everyone and far too much work for me.

The purpose of this thread is simply to see if there are members of the community who would be interested in helping out.

Thanks for your time!
