unclevlad
Might as well start this now, it's not far off...scary as that sounds. So, Deion Sanders isn't exactly on my Christmas card list, but still.... You might've seen him last year, where he was getting around on the sidelines, his left leg on a rolling cart...couldn't walk on it. Kinda weird. Never did hear...or maybe didn't remember...why. Yes, well... Turns out he had surgery to repair a dislocated toe. That...had issues. It led to blood clots. And more surgery. And the removal of 2 toes. (Ick.) It's been getting worse. More surgery scheduled Friday to relieve clots...and here's the kicker. Or non-kicker, perhaps...because amputating his left foot was a possibility. They're not gonna do that right now, but apparently it's still a possibility. Kinda repeats the aphorism....there's no such thing as minor surgery. Pariah
With U$C and U¢LA headed to the B1G, conventional wisdom has the conference targeting San Diego State and SMU as replacement members. Both schools are apparently acting like it's already a done deal. San Diego State has even sent their current conference, the Mountain West, a letter of resignation. But here's where it gets complicated. The PAC reportedly won't make anything official until their upcoming media rights deal is finalized (by the end of the month, allegedly). If SDSU officially resigns by June 30th, they owe the MWC a $16M exit fee with a year's notice. But if they resign after that and still join the PAC for 2024-25, they'll owe nearly twice that much. So San Diego State has asked the MW for an extension, so that they can know for sure that the PAC is really going to pick them up if they leave. The Mountain West Conference's response was basically "LOL, no." But now it looks like the MWC has already started moving on without the Aztecs. Did the Mountain West just kick out San Diego State? Strangely, there's been no such drama (that I know of) with SMU and their current conference, the American. What that means (or doesn't mean), I couldn't say. . unclevlad
No disrespect to SDSU but the Pac-12's days still appear to be numbered, at least as a power 5 conference. Which further suggests that the Realignment Carousel will be back at full speed...sooner, rather than later.

Yes, the most likely outcome appears to be Washington and Oregon (and maybe Cal and Stanford) to the B1G, Arizona and Colorado (and maybe Utah and Arizona State) to the Big 12, and the remaining teams being absorbed into the Mountain West. It would be a little weird for San Diego State to leave the Mountain West now, only to have to return in a few years when the PAC finally disintegrates.
