Teams that Want to Change the World

Leaving aside for the moment whether a group of superhuman beings that uses its powers and abilities to force social change on the world is a good thing, let's try coming up with "heroes" who want to do just that. For an example....

THE COMPETITION

This team, while it also fights petty crime and provides disaster relief, believes that free-market capitalism is the answer to all of Earth's problems. Thus, their primary mission is to work to promote capitalism and destroy barriers to free trade. They'll be intially sponsored by a large corporation or two, but the Competition has no qualms about attacking corporations when they violate laissez faire policies. Members include:

Invisible Hand: A mentalist with Mind Link to other Competition members, Invisibility and Invisible Effects Telekinesis. He's the official leader of the group.

Lassie Fair: An attractive Scotswoman, who's a martial arts expert and escape artist.

Rising Tide: A hydrokinetic who has some means of breathing underwater. He hates being called "Trickle Down."

Barrier Buster: A brick whose strength is Armor-Piercing against walls and barriers. He's claustrophobic.

Supply Side: The team member who makes the Competition really fearsome. He can Succor any one teammate's powers at a time, making that teammate virtually unstoppable. He himself, however, is a bit of a weak link, and doesn't get a lot of respect from the public.

Any other characters that should join the Competition, or perhaps you'd like to create a team of your own?

Best,

SKJAM!

Re: Teams that Want to Change the World

If they are going to b low-power, corporate sponsorship is about right.

A higher level team might be sponsored by the World Trade Association. That allows the team memers to be international, increasing usability.

So far as groups that want to change the world...

Imagine a high level psionic who is able to psionicly teach people things. They travel to third world nations, and educate the population, psionicly.

Problems would aris if she teached the people things the government objects to, the whol question of mind control, and even western nations that don't really want to see third world populations asking questions.

VIPER would also become involved, of course.

Re: Teams that Want to Change the World

Well even the standard crimefighting team is more interesting when their scale increases not just by their personal powers, but by their operations.

For instance, Justice League fighting every bankrobber and thug=bad

But the X-men using their network of mutant allies, contaced via cerebro, to coordinate crimefighting all over the world= good

And as for some other causes...

How about a hero team that is for the humane treatment of supervillains? In exchange for more humane, if less secure, imprisoning of super-convicts, they offer their pro bono service to be on call in case of breakouts. They could sponsored by Amnesty International, ect.

Re: Teams that Want to Change the World

I'm working on a quick mini-writeup of an outfit I have sitting in my files called "The Pledge", which I've never really taken beyond a rough concept/outline before.

The short version is: during the Cuban Missile Crisis, a bunch of supers signed on to trying to prevent, or stop, the then apparently imminent nuclear war. Later on, they opposed the involvement of supers in the Vietnam war, adopted a pro-mutant position on an "equality with normals" basis and so on.

Fast forward a few decades, and you have a left-wing anti-interventionist group who are willing to defend even the grubbiest right-wing dictatorships against liberal do-gooders and conservative super-patriots alike. And then provide covert assistance to the opposition to these dictatorships... They prefer not to go head to head with major governments, because they know they will lose, but they will face off against other supers.

Their main deal is fairly standard mutant rights stuff, though.

They have a few, mainly mutant, heavy hitters, some very serious scientists/gadgeteers, allies in strange places, lots of relatively low powered non-adventuring supers, non-super contacts, and a few non-powered but capable operatives. And a few hippy mystics, even though most of the core of the organisation don't really believe in magic.

I'm still struggling with getting the core membership of the group to feel right. Part of the problem is that the group isn't necessarily built around its toughest members... I also want a feel that isn't quite as X-Men as the usual mutant rights outfit.

Hopefully I'll have more tomorrow.

The Matter Master gives the world a coke: 1d6 Minor Transform, enough megascale on area affect to include the entire world with the limitation only in hexes with people in them and the limitation only to produce a chilled bottle of Coca-Cola for every person in the world.
