AliceTheOwl
Re: The Last Word I'd invite you on a tour of my thought process but it utilizes non-euclidian geometry and I wouldn't want you to get lost or hurt. How, um, considerate of you . . . Though, I'm not sure it's much worse than my own thought processes at 3 AM when I can't sleep.

zornwil
Re: The Last Word Ever see the Dick Van Dyke episode wherein Laura sets Rob's alarm clock ahead like 2 hours after he asks to sleep that much longer, so that he snaps out of bed, saying how refreshed he feels, then she says she set it ahead, then he's tired and annoyed? I'd have had to kill her, myself. Well, MTM always had her cuteness to deflect such attacks, in her younger days.

AliceTheOwl
Re: The Last Word Oh, right. Der. Hmm. I wonder what's causing the lag, then? I'm getting the same thing on livejournal. L. Marcus
Re: The Last Word . . . At work? On a Sunday? If you were at home, I'd hazard a guess about a little itty bitty kitty chewing on your ethertnet cable.
ghost-angel
Re: The Last Word I work on Sundays. It's fun. If you like staring at a screen that's doing nothing for 8 hours.
AliceTheOwl
Re: The Last Word Heh. If I were home, that would make a lot of sense. In fact, there probably is an itty bitty kitty chewing on a cable back home. But yeah, working on a Sunday. I'm outta vacation time for the year, so, if I'm not losing money for going to Dragon*Con, I need to pack on hours elsewhere.

L. Marcus
Re: The Last Word . . . You guys get all the Cons . . . Must be over a year since I last worked a Sunday. The one day of rest I really can count on. Mostly.
AliceTheOwl
Re: The Last Word It's definitely been a while since I worked on a weekend. It was . . . actually, the LAST time they stiffed me on vacation time, I had to do this to get away and visit the family. That was two years ago. L. Marcus
Re: The Last Word Actually, I wouldn't mind working Sundays. Weekend pay is really good -- after saturday noon, there's a 100% Uncomfortable Work Hours bonus. Say that a new girl -- or guy, for that matter, but most are girls -- workin the registers start at the aquivalent to US$12/hour, working only weekends between eight and sixteen (seven hours of effectively paid time -- eight scheduled hours means one hour break), would earn something like US$276/week, or US$1,200 a month. Subtract a third of that as tax, and you got US$800/month for eight days of work!
AliceTheOwl
Re: The Last Word Hmm. Not bad. We have blue laws in individual states that allow for more money on Sundays, but NC isn't one of them.
L. Marcus
Re: The Last Word There is little regularization in law of labor pay. Pay is set in negotiations between employer's organizations and labor unions. My union, Handelsanställdas förbund (Union of Retail Employees, maybe?), is considered one of the weaker unions. AliceTheOwl
Re: The Last Word Yeah, basically. As I understand it, anyway. It also sounds like it would complicate the hiring process somewhat.
L. Marcus
Re: The Last Word Naw. The employer can hire whoever he wants -- it's when he wants to fire someone that it gets complicated. "Last hired, first fired," is the code, and if an employer wants to bypass the queue, so to speak, without fair cause (as defined by agreement with the union), he'll have to pay a pretty substantial fine. This happened to my dad, once. He just couldn't get along with an employee, and wanted him out. Since "not getting along" is not considered a fair cause of firing, well . . . AliceTheOwl
Re: The Last Word Yeah, we have a Right To Hire law in NC, which everyone I've heard mentioning it calls the "Right to fire" law. You don't have to have cause, basically.
