The star was being driven by the dreaded Medusae, looking for solar systems to plunder. Planets fleeing the galaxy are featured in Larry Niven's RINGWORD, and Stanley Schmidt's LIFEBOAT EARTH. Both novels have the same reason to vacate, the galactic core has exploded and the deadly radiation wavefront will render the galaxy uninhabitable.
