The Avalon project was one of several Ministry of War crash program to develop super human soldiers (other projects where based on Automatons, super weapons and the acquisition of strange artifacts etc.). Project Avalon was based on documents recovered from a pacific island compound by agents of the crown detailing highly advanced experiments in Biological manipulation it was not until the 30s and a general improvement in Biochemical knowledge. Even so the project probably wouldn't have gone anywhere if it was not for the brilliance of Professor Dante an Italian Jewish chemist (and former 1920s international scientific adventurer) considered by many the world’s greatest chemist. He had fled his home country following the Mussolini’s fascist government’s disenfranchisement of Jewish Italians. He and his beautiful daughter fled to England and where he was quickly brought in to the inner circle of the project by Sir Montgomery Prendick who privately funded the initial stages and fought for it within government. Sir Prendick set up the original project in the country house Prendick hall built by his reclusive great uncle who made the family fortune with many patents on chemical processes after returning from a time at sea with some peculiar tales and more peculiar ways. Phase 1 project chimera When the war started the project was already under way thanks to the determination of Sir Prendick. By the time of the disastrous Dunkirk evacuation the first phase of the project was underway. the creation of various serums form animal subjects that would then be injected into human subjects along with a cocktail of drugs designed to stimulate rapid cellular regeneration and hopefully allow the targets to take on the characteristics of the beasts. Human subjects where obtained from a plentiful supply soldiers who had received wounds that did not kill them outright but from which they would eventually die where offered the chance to serve their country and perhaps gain more life. the failures unfortunately significantly outnumbered the successes very few of these initial patients survived but there were a few and while they were disfigured by the experiments taking on bestial aspects they showed what was possible and could be accomplished. Few of those who survived where capable of combat but one or two would go on to serve in the special units that came out of Avalon. these included the scarlet ray a seaman rescued from a destroyed British ship during the evacuation at Dunkirk with serious burns over 90% of his body he was offered the chance to join project Avalon and was exposed to a serum derived from a cocktail of aquatic creatures his skin regenerated but became shark like tougher than human skin he developed gills the ability to withstand extreme cold improved strength and speed and an amazing sense of smell he would become one of the secret successes of Avalon performing many daring sub aquatic operations for the SOE special section to whom products of the various super soldier programs where attached Phase 2 Project Eminent domain with the difficulties found with using serums derived from animals the next phase was based on finding exceptional people and both extracting and enhancing the abilities they had subtle enquiries where made people with extraordinary skills where brought to the hall under great secrecy athletes circus performers and service men with unusual gifts where all brought in samples taken and attempts made to enhance those exceptional gifts. Project Samson (enhanced strength) Captain Theodore "Typhoon" Tennyson a merchant navy captain with a reputation for brawling his incredible strength especially when angry earned him the nickname Typhoon when he was working the south seas the serum developed from his blood helped concentrate his ability making him super humanly strong and tough especially when his anger flared. project Lamia (enhanced flexibility of joints and tendons) Thomas Long aka Long Tom one of a number of circus performers used to developed the various phase two projects long tom used to perform as a contortionist due to his multip0le double and triple jointed joints and an ability to stretch and twist into seemingly impossible openings he had worked as the human snake and incredible rubber man his abilities where developed for a super spy program designed to create perfect assassins and thieves long tom became even more flexible than before able to contort his body and stretch his limbs altering his height and enhancing his stride. Project Mentat (enhanced intelligence) project mentat was considered one of the most important projects what good super soldiers without super tacticians to lead them but it would be the most dangerous the process was hugely destructive to test subjects more so than any of the other phase two projects psychosis mono mania mental retardation and savantism where common side effects experienced by those who volunteered for project mentat the only Phase two success was Ian "memory man" Philips a vaudeville entertainer who ran an act based on his extraordinary memory the process enhanced his memory and gave him the ability to accurately draw anything he saw or mimic any voice he heard unfortunately he still suffered from several psychological impairments but eventually became the reason for the formation of Ryan’s rejects when he was sent into occupied France ahead of d day to mentally photograph various key sites. The propaganda department had developed a costume and propaganda campaign for the first of the new breed of soldiers he would be LIONHEART. it was at this time disaster struck Hans Faber a German agent who had infiltrated the project disguised as an escaped Dutch chemist attempted to steal the samples and main project notes torch the labs and files and assassinate professor Dante the only one who knew the secret of the cellular regeneration drugs. he would have succeeded if he hadn't if he hadn't been encountered by the projects resident chaplain who come across him spattered with professor Dante’s blood, 'carrying the satchel contain the serums and his incendiary device about to deliver a final fatal shot to the already wounded dante. There was a fight Hans knew he could best the chaplain but there fight attracted the attention of The projects martial arts instructor lady Gwendolen Griffith-Hallsey( daughter of a former ambassador to japan where she had spent her youth learning judo and karate) in the frantic scuffle the incendiary device in the satchel containing the serum and project notes was triggered showering all of the combatants with a mixture of project serums and the last of professor Dante's crucial drug. and Lady Griffith-Hallsey would become the second and last great hero of the Avalon project Lady LION HEART though never as string as her male counterpart her prodigious fighting skills made her more than a match for any of the super powered foes that emerged late in the war. Operation Hairpin After the final battle at Ettersburg the British and American forces wanted to prevent the Nazis more exotic research getting into the hands of the Russians which lead to Operation Hairpin a series of British operations that took place after D day and continued after the end of the war similar to operation paperclip, Hairpin was intended to capture all German intelligence and personnel involved in the German super soldier programs. After the war Project Avalon and its American counterpart both failed to create the army of super men they envisioned Even so without the cellular regeneration drugs or vita rays there was no way to control the process in new subjects some attempts were made with the few remaining samples resulted in initial success but without the controlling influence of the regeneration techniques the serums proved to be unstable particularly causing degenerative mental states leading to psychosis. The project was shelved. It would not be until the discovery of DNA in 1952 that a more nuanced understanding of what the Avalon serums actually did was found. The Korean War. During the Korean War the few survivors of project after the V-omega incident operated as part of the UN Command. The use of super powered individuals in war would become a contentious issue between china and Russia due to (their relative lack of superhuman) especially after Lady Lion-heart’s failed assassination of Kim IL sung. The assassination would lead to the UN Security Council’s Additions to the Geneva conventions regarding the use of Extra-normal combatants the use was explicitly banned in all situations besides outside of the he national defense within the combatant’s national borders was officially banned. The late 50s After the war due to the security behind the project the government lost track of many of the test subjects. Especially those who hadn’t been damaged by the process those who had experienced little or no enhancement from the serums dropped off the radar. Most settled down and got on with their lives having children seemingly unaffected by the process. Dozens of children would be conceived over the next few years it wouldn’t be till the test subjects children hit puberty and began to manifest Avalon project abilities often significantly enhanced over their parents. This would lead to a mad scramble to find out why these powered individuals where appearing the project files where reopened and more unsuccessful attempts would be made to resurrect the techniques. Very little success was had again the secret formula of professor Dante’s regeneration serum was the sticking point while improvements in knowledge of genetics made the capabilities more impressive but the issues of rejection and mental disorders remained. A number of Avalon project children would become heroes in the UK. The first would be David Bleakmoor LIONHEARTII a young man born near Prendick Hall shortly before the V-omega incident. He was believed to he was the Illegitimate son of LIONHEART and his village sweetheart. A master swordsman with superhuman reflexes, strength and toughness. He would go on to be the leader of the British national team helping save the nation from super criminal’s alien invasion and soviet spies. Late 1960s Many the children of Avalon would appear over the following years coming into conflict with the establishment many of the children would join the counter culture several would become would found their own team the Birmingham brigade an anti-establishment group of young heroes. Shattered Aegis Since the reign of Queen Victoria the realm had been defended by especially gifted agents Her Majesties Shining Aegis. The premier team of extra-normal heroes in the country but the team was almost destroyed during the so called summer of love by shocking revelations about two of its members. The first would be the story of LIONHEART II. The STASI (East German secret police) is East Berlin would discover a secret lab belonging to EISENFAUST amongst the files detailing incomplete attempts to resurrect the Avalon project was a detailed debriefs of the Nazi superman’s escape from Prendick hall and his time operating with the UK before he escaped to occupied Europe. Detailed in this report was his time at a farm near the hall where he had hidden out pretending to be a downed airman and had seduced the farmer’s gullible daughter Emily Bleakmoor. In an attempt to destabilize the Shining Aegis soviet agents would leak this information to the British press hounded by the press and sickened by the knowledge of who his father was LIONHEART would experience a total mental breakdown he would become the villainous BLACKHEART scourge of The UK and free Europe. The next betrayal would be even more damaging the discovery of a mole within the Aegis the percipient periphrastic Pugilistic Professor Payne worlds expert linguist and master of the language of violence would betray the team following the defection of Kim Filby in 1963 suspicion would fall on Payne who had been at Cambridge at the same time as the Cambridge 5 and moved in some of the same circles it would take several years for Payne’s links to The KGB to come to light Payne had been an agent for the soviets for decades at this point copying documents he came into contact with as part of his role as a translator of Xeno-linguistics. eventually he was discovered defeated several of his team mates including his supposed girlfriend Godiva the Go Go diva and escaped to the Russian embassy and then was smuggled out of the Uk and into Russia with a huge amount of information both physically and in his prodigious memory he would give the Russians there first major clues towards perfecting there variant of the Avalon Process. The 70’s and 80’s Following the defection of Professor Payne and the Russians acquisition of key project files the Russians began a massive campaign to create their own super soldiers while they still suffered from many of the same issues as the post war attempts in the UK AND US, Russian strategists where much more willing to deploy the insane products of these programs certainly rumors persist that both Russia and America deployed super soldiers illegally during the Vietnam war. China also gained access to Avalon project data and began their own experiments as well as a national screening program to recruit the naturally occurring extra normal talents within the country. Very little head way would be made on the process during the period the only other notable event was the Falkland’s war as it was an attack on a British overseas territory the UN ban on the fielding of extra normal combatants did not apply and it was the first time that they engaged in combat though only a few would serve the nation during the conflict several more where created due to pioneering medical treatments developed from failed attempts to recreate the process notably grenadier and Challenger. The fall of the iron curtain. 1989 and the fall of the berlin wall the end of the USSR would lead to an explosion of Avalon process research while the western world was mostly shutting down its research no longer needing super soldiers without the threat of a soviet invasion the scientists working behind the iron curtain found themselves thrown into chaos suddenly without funding and with their labs being on countries no longer part of the USSR scientist would be acquired by various organizations at this time other nations like Iraq and Libya would attempt to acquire super soldier technology almost as hard as trying to acquire nuclear weapons. The technology would filter to North Korea and even some South American drug cartels and international companies would invest in trying to crack the secret. The 90’s to the present Seeing the dangers of unrestricted use development of super soldiers the UN Security Council passed a resolution banning experimentation and the deliberate creation of super soldiers. And the UN has a team of inspectors as well as their own. extra normal team to attempt to enforce the ban but the genie is out of the bottle and the advances in genetics since the 40s mean that seemingly more and more successful process are being developed by the unscrupulous. What is more the number of carriers failed test subjects and their offspring who may spontaneously start to exhibit Avalon traits grows every year with there now being second and third generations of test subject offspring spread across the world. In the UK surprisingly all Avalon research has been shut down with the last New super soldier in the UK being COLDSTREAM who gained his powers when he was exposed to the product of a Iraqi spur soldier program during The second Gulf war. The UK has switched its attention to technological enhancement to face Extra-normal foes and was a major contributor to the PEAV or euro flyer project which developed the Kestrel flight suit a light aerial power armored suit now deployed across Europe. The only other significant incident in the UK was the so called Combat Omega incident a group of four neo Nazi thugs who managed to acquire a sample of EISENFAUSTS blood from an aging Nazi scientist (captured as part of Operation hairpin) and turned themselves into super terrorists they would attack a variety of racially motivated targets . These attacks culminated in an epic battle at the 1996 UEFA European Football Championship semi-final between England and Germany.
