If he’s saying they are not books, that's a whole discussion on what is or is not literature. If he’s saying they aren’t funny, that’s just an inane point to make. “Comic” stems from “comedy,” which despite the modern connotation, does not simply mean “funny”. Comedy is, traditionally, the opposite of Tragedy, not the opposite of “serious” or “realistic.”

So maybe he's saying that the current state of the comics industry is a tragedy? I could get behind that... :)

Not just the current state of the comics industry, but the stories told themselves count as tragedies.

 

Not to mention (IMO, anyway) tragically bad!
