Re: Film Noir Hero

I can understand wanting to have a more succinct title. I'm just worried about linguistic drift. Actual film noir is special enough to warrant its own term' date=' so I feel distinction are worth making.[/quote']

The more I thought about it, the more I agree with you and I changes it to "Silver Screen Hero" and will break out the sections by sub-genre (Film Noir, Serials, Detective, etc).

BACKGROUND/HISTORY

The character of Charlie Chan was created by author Earl Derr Biggers, who wrote several mystery novels featuring the character. Biggers based Charlie Chan in part on a Honolulu police officer named Chang Apana. Both the character of Charlie Chan and the real-life Chang Apana worked in Honululu and were accomplished, respected police officers of Chinese descent, but the similarities seem to end there. The first screen appearances of Charlie Chan were in silent serials and the character also had a small role in the 1929 early talkie "Behind That Curtain."

PERSONALITY

Charlie is a famed Police Inspector (and later Federal Agent) who lives in Hawaii with his wife and massive number of children. Charlie is polite, cheerful, and softspoke, however, an acerbic wit lies just below the surface. He is a clever investigator and well respected by his peers.

QUOTE

"You should get married and raise large family. Once you have large family, all other troubles mean nothing. ""Three murders. All different. Dog cannot chase three rabbits at same time. Manning Case like modern highway. Sooner or later come to detour.""Record indicate most murder result from violence, and murder without bloodstain like Amos without Andy - most unusual. ""Grain of sand in eye may hide mountain.""Finding web of spider does not prove which spider spin web."

BACKGROUND/HISTORY

Birmingham Brown is a character from the Monogram Pictures Charlie Chan series of films introduced between 1944 and 1949. He was a combination chauffeur, side-kick, and trusted assistant. Oftentimes jittery, sometimes bug-eyed, and always superstitious, Birmingham Brown was forever warning the members of the Chan clan to stay away from an obviously dangerous case or situation.

PERSONALITY

Birmingham is a likable, quick witted, and long suffering fellow who just wants to do his job and have a nice, quiet life -- sadly he is saddled with a Police Inspector employer and Charlie Chan's endless supply of troublesome offspring -- offspring who often drag Birmingham into situations he wisely recognizes as dangerous.
"How come you walkin' around? Don't you know you dead? ""Hurry? Why do you always have to hurry to a murder? Why can't you just ooze on down to one?""You know, after being here, I could have an elegant time in a cemetary reading tombstones at midnight. ""As mad as I am with that man, I hate to think of what I think of him. It makes me blush. ""Murder's all right, Mr. Chan, but you wholesale it! "

Re: Film Noir Hero

I have updated the Silver Screen Hero site to add the new characters in a web friendly format. I have also centralized all the Hero Designer Files.

Please Note: I have used the "TACTICS" section to list the films the character has appeared in and changed some of the "Basic Information" fields to suit my needs.

Re: Film Noir Hero

There were three Rocketman Serials and one Television Show that was also packaged as a Serial. The final of the four does not follow the standard Republic Serial format. This is the first Rocketman, Jeff King, the three that followed were various iterations of Commando Cody, though there were so differences, such as name, actor, and setting. As a result, each Rocketman will be presented separately. Each will be uploaded to the website and their HDC file will be in the central repository.

BACKGROUND/HISTORY

A "Rocket Man" character appeared in four Republic Pictures movie serials from 1949 through 1953. The fourth serial, originally conceived of as a Republic TV series, was first released (for contractual reasons) as a theatrical serial. Two years later, it was finally syndicated on TV as twelve 25-minute episodes. An evil genius of unknown identity, calling himself "Dr Vulcan," plots to conquer the world, but first needs to eliminate one by one the members of the Science Associates, an organization of the Earth's greatest scientists. After narrowly escaping an attempt on his life by Vulcan, one member of Science Associates, Dr. Millard (James Craven), outfits another member, Jeff King (Tristram Coffin) with an "atomic powered rocket flying suit."With the help of the suit, a magazine photographer named Glenda Thomas (Mae Clarke), and other inventions of Dr. Millard, King battles the minions of Dr. Vulcan for twelve suspenseful episodes. Eventually Vulcan steals one of Millard's more dangerous inventions, the Decimator, and uses it to flood and destroy Manhattan Island (courtesy of stock footage from the once-thought-lost film, Deluge (1933)), before being brought to justice by Jeff King in his jet pack.

This famous serial recycles the rocket-powered flying suit from King of the Rocket Men (1949). The main character, Commando Cody, is a civilian researcher with a number of employees and a large laboratory. (The laboratory building is actually the front office of Republic Pictures with a fake "Cody Laboratories" sign.)Commando Cody has a rocket-powered flying suit and a rocket ship capable of reaching the moon. When the U.S. finds itself under attack from a mysterious forces that can wipe out entire military bases and industrial complexes, Cody surmises that the Earth is under attack from our own moon. He takes the rocket there to discover and confront the moon's dictator Retik, who announces plans to conquer our planet and move the moon's entire population there.Cody spends most of the serial's chapters on Earth, battling an elusive lunar warrior named Krog and his gang of human crooks, hired to steal and stockpile supplies for the invasion. Clayton Moore plays Krog's chief gangster assistant.

PERSONALITY

An overly serious man, Cody is a reseacher that runs Cody Laboratories. He is dedicated, patriotic, and more than a little foolhardy. Cody relies on his luck more than he does good planning. However, like all the Rocketmen, he is fiercely loyal to his friends and places himself at great risk to save them.

Re: Film Noir Hero

And I finish up the Rocket Men with the second version of Commando Cody. Since Cody II is very different than Cody I, and almost identical to the Larry Martin Rocket Man (down to the same actor), I have combined Martin and Cody II into the same character. Details of how the characters became so confused is listed in the biography section.

BACKGROUND/HISTORY

A "Rocket Man" character appeared in four Republic Pictures movie serials from 1949 through 1953. The fourth serial, originally conceived of as a Republic TV series, was first released (for contractual reasons) as a theatrical serial. Two years later, it was finally syndicated on TV as twelve 25-minute episodes.Commando Cody was originally filmed as a twelve-part television series,[1][2] but union contract issues forced Republic to first exhibit it through regular movie theaters as a 12-part weekly serial. While the TV episodes build on each other in chronological order, the episodes lacked the traditional cliffhanger endings that characterized all previous serials. The Sky Marshal TV series is a prequel to the Radar Men from the Moon theatical serial. The first episode has characters Joan and Ted, Commando Cody's established sidekicks in Radar Men, applying for their jobs and meeting Cody for the first time. There was a substantial break between filming the first three and last nine episodes of the TV series, during which time Republic set about filming a new Rocketman movie serial called Zombies of the Stratosphere, also starring Judd Holdren and Aline Towne. Originally intended to be a Cody serial, and a direct sequel to Radar Men, Zombies was subject to last-minute revisions to its principal characters; most notably Holdren's "Commando Cody" character became "Larry Martin" instead. Meanwhile, the third TV episode was filmed in a way to show the apparent death of The Ruler, suggesting that Republic may have reconsidered filming the remaining nine TV episodes by converting the three it had finished into a regular science fiction feature film.By the time work finally resumed on the Sky Marshal series, Republic had lost actor William Schallert as Cody's male colleague "Ted Richards" (played by William Bakewell in Radar Men). A replacement was found in Richard Crane, a year before his tour of duty began as the character "Dave Patterson" on the science fiction TV series Rocky Jones, Space Ranger. The Ruler also gained a female sidekick, played by Gloria Pall, though she had almost no screen dialog.

Commando Cody reuses the Rocketman costume first seen in Republic's 1949 serial King of the Rocket Men. Various elements were also reused from their other serials, like The Purple Monster Strikes. The Sky Marshal series also loosely recycles characters, sets, props, and concepts from the Radar Men serial. Two streamlined, bullet-shaped prop helmets were again used with the Rocketman costume: The first was made of lighter weight materials and worn only during the various stunt action scenes; during filming, the visors on both helmets frequently warped and would stick open or closed. When not in his flying jacket and helmet, Cody wears a black military tunic with many insignia, instead of the regular business suit seen in the Radar Men serial. Cody also wears a black domino mask, presumably to hide his real identity. Holdren always suspected this was due to producers not wanting to take a chance that he might walk out if any future demands for a higher salary were not met, as Clayton Moore had done on the popular The Lone Ranger television series. The mask presumably served to conceal any change of actor should the part ever need recasting; disguising the change of lead with a domino mask had not worked well in the case of the Lone Ranger series.

Re: Film Noir Hero

Are you sure it wasn't "Commander Cody?"

I watched the various "rocket man" serials on television when I was a kid. Rocket Man's/ Commander Cody's takeoff and flight was one of the coolest looking sci-fi effects from the era.

The flight was a genius piece of engineering. They carved a rocket man out of a single piece of wood and ran it one a wire from the hills to the valley and filmed it at different angles. They repeated the effect with Captain Marvel.

Re: Film Noir Hero

Some suggestions for other famous fictional characters:

Ezekiel "Easy" Rawlins and his friend "Mouse" from "Devil in a Blue Dress" and other books by Walter Mosley

Officer Bud White et al from LA Confidential

Sam Spade, Mike Hammer and Philip Marlowe, of course

I'm currently working my way through the "Thin Man" movies again, so, Nick and Nora will be coming up soon. I'll be doing a few Bogart characters Sam Spade/Phillip Marlowe/Rick Blaine. Then I'll likely do some Orson Welles characters like Mike Vargas and Harry Lime. I am trying to steer away from modern films, so LA Confidential probably won't be done, but Kansas City Confidential (1952) probably will.
