Cassandra
A group of individual heroes find they have someone in common when that person mysteriously disappears. They team up to find the person, who turns out to either be another hero in trouble, or someone who can provide resources for a new super team. Boll Weevil
There's a reason for clichés. I agree. The bank robbery scene is a cliche because those of us who have been playing Champions for decades have seen it dozens of times. Anyone who would participate in an Introduction to Champions game would not see it as cliche.
Cassandra
If you want to introduce your characters into a superhero universe, why not have an alien invasion take place, and the heroes individual fight the aliens. They defeat one threat, and are gathered together by a Government representative for a special mission that could turn the tide. If they succeed they would become national heroes, and soon find themselves with support and resources. Then they might discover that the support has strings attached and they have to decide to go independent or remain where they are.

Along those lines, you could adapt the Q'Laar invasion from the Champions Online tutorial.
